After Marshall made an appearance on a local news show (link below if you want to watch it!), he was contacted by a local woman with an amazing Rolex Explorer from the 60's that was left to her by her father. Unfortunately the watch got seawater in it on a day at the beach and had stopped running. After the local Rolex dealer, and even Rolex itself declined to work on the watch, Marshall undertakes his most challenging restoration yet to try to get it back on her wrist!

Hypnotic. Got me watching for almost an hour and I have no interests in watches. Great engineering, fantastic repair skills, knowledge and passion. And I must say that he was able to keep me interested all the way through without becoming boring or making me feel uninterested... almost like as if I was a colleague who also does watch repairs. Great at verbally "illustrating" the work being done... fascinating.

As we have transitioned from the mechanical analog age to the digital age the incredible engineering prowess of these watchmakers becomes forgotten . You have clearly put in the time and effort to become a master at what you do and all of your videos are fascinating and educational. Thank you for what you do in bringing a dose of humanity and history to divert us from the digital leviathan threatening to overwhelm us all.

Don't worry. Give it 50 years to collect and erase them and another 25-50 to reintroduce it (possibly rebranded/renamed). That is what yesterday's businesses/governments call invention.

I have to say from the start that I’m not a watch person…honestly no idea why YouTube suggested this video. But I couldn’t happier that I was able to witness greatness…you’re obviously skilled ( with hands like a surgeon), have passion not just for the history of Rolex( much of which I didn’t know) and this watch as a collectors item in general. For me the story of the watch and the idea of bringing it back to life was awesome. I’ll never have a watch like this to give to leave my children but I can appreciate family heirlooms and the effort you made in the reconstruction process. I love knowing there are skilled and caring people out there! You are certainly one of them. TY and all the best to you !

As the owner of a GMT Master II, this repair piece is really good. I have had the watch since 1989 and have worn it everyday since. It was a gift form my deceased wife and means so much to me and will be given to my grandson after I die. It's incredible how tight the tolerances are on such tiny mechanisms. As a machinist who does work for big industries, I see so much rust on things that just keep on chugging along, whereas something so small and delicate requires every piece to be pristine. Really gives you an appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in the design of these cool little devices.
Vor 7 MonateAiden Gracey +20
Think it's more the relative size compared to foreign matter. 1mm of rust on something 1000mm is nothing, 0.1mm of rust on 10mm is like playing football in quicksand
Vor 7 MonateAlex Griggs +9
@Aiden Gracey that's what tolerance is about, it's the range of size that a part can be and still function, when saying watches have tight tolerances it's saying that a small change in size would cause the part to not work, there's no relative tolerance based on size, it depends on the function each part has to perform

I've got to say: I really didn't expect to watch an almost 1 hour video on watch repair. But this video was honestly so satisfying and interesting! I'm impressed with how complex the watch is yet you're easily able to name every part and keep them organized. To me that seems like magic. You're also so careful with the way you work! Like some of those plyers were wooden or plastic coated to prevent scratching? There were even times when you covered the pieces in plastic before you disassembled them. I really am impressed by your level of care and attention to detail. You seem to really care about doing a good job and I think this is reflected in result. I'd get the part names wrong often enough, but I can see how they related and work together well enough to figure out assembly and disassembly. What's worth gold is seeing lube points and what's worth platinum, seeing which tools get used for what purpose. The only better thing for cleaning than an ultrasonic cleaner is two ultrasonic cleaners! ;) Just looked up the rust away, MSDS shows Ammonium Bifluoride and an acid to buffer and complex things, plus a solvent. Ammonium Bifluoride is properly known as Ammonium Hydrogen Bifluoride and disassociates into HF in water, so not a good thing to get on you, but it's a 1 - 10% level in the solution, reasonable precautions would work well enough. Phosphoric acid would do the same thing, but it'd leave a phosphide layer that'd discolor the movement. That's the active ingredient in naval jelly and also what's used when heated to Parkerize steel gun parts.

@I Shoot Watches Why are you so offended by the idea that Rolex refused to complete the repair? With the extent of damage to the movement and likely necessity for limited-stock replacement parts, it's possible that they did not want to devote the necessary resources to this repair. They are currently behind on repairs, and many of their experienced watchmakers have recently retired. Guess living in Geneva didn't cue you in to all of the factors at play here.

Wow, I could feel some of your tension. I know absolutely nothing about watch repair, but I stay in awe of you. If Rolex doesn’t try to steal you away I would be surprised.

If I had the tools and better eyesight I still don't think I could do such clean work. I found this channel a day or two ago and I've watched about a dozen videos already. Liked and subbed.

She not only got the watch back, she also get a very detailed video to document the whole process, definitely learn more about watch and may start to appreciate the watch more than before. Thanks to the God-like watchmaker!

Wow, you are incredible and whoever engineered this watch to make it what it is is nothing short of a genius.

It must have been devastating to the owner when Rolex declined to repair this. Very interesting to watch your repair skills. It is amazing that parts can be found.

I'm positive that the owner is more appreciative than you could ever imagine. Outstanding work! I'm happy for the owner and for you...the enjoyment you got when you saw that the watch worked, absoluteiy came through in the video. Again, well done!

I don’t understand why the factory refused to service this watch. It seems you were a little nervous taking the movement apart but you took it totally apart. It seems that it wasn’t all that difficult for you but it’s ouvious your a pro. I love people who exactly what there doing. Fun to watch you!!!

Great job 👏 never watched an entire YouTube video ever. I really like the commentary. It was a bunch of mixed emotions every step of the way. Beautiful time piece. Excellent restoration.

this video just stumbled on my home page since i have no great inrerest in watches but damn i cant believe the stress and complications these watches go through when they are made and restoring feels like you doing an open heart surgery. Wanted to kill some time and watching this made me almost forgot about time for a bit . Great work

Well done sir!! One question ive always had is how do you know what type of torque to put on the caseback when you screw it back on? Do you just hand tighten it until it wont move anymore? Or is there a scientific way to set the case back tightness

I love the idea of "company refuses yo fix own product, dude on youtube does it himself" I cant imagine the horror when such an expensive piece gets ruined, or the joy she felt when she got to pass it off to you. Another job well done good sir!

Wow, I stumbles accross this video. Not into watches but being an engineer appreciated the work you did referring the watch and the patience you need working with tiny pieces. A credit to you

on this side of youtube, this isn't my normal entertainment genre. But god i really enjoyed watching this video. Especially with someone with 0 knowledge of how these things work. seeing every tiny intricate part having the TLC it needed and so well professionally done made this really enjoyable to watch. thank you WWR. +1 follow.

Awesome work! The only observation is that brass and stainless steel aren't prone to damage from rust since both materials don't rust as steel. In fact all the rust in the movement came from ferrous metal (steel) and was extended through out the parts. Magnificent job and the best is that you really have the conscience to work as an art curator while you make your magic.

Once in a long while, I get a video recommendation that doesn't relate to my usual interests. And I enjoyed this one thoroughly! Your passion to your craft of both repairing watches and making videos about it shines through this entire our of footage. You deserve this traffic you are getting man, awesome work.

Didn't realize I'd watch through the entire 52 minutes of this video. The way you narrated through the process was surreal in a sense that it really got me hooked. Subscribed.

Magnificent!! It is astonishing that you and others have these elevated skills. It is mesmerizing to watch. I would send the vid to Rolex and show them what determination and caring can do, where they declined. Very well done, sir 51:42

Incredible video! I watched the whole thing. It doesn’t matter that you are a professional, this is just outstanding work. And great that you left the hands as they were and did not clean them.

Love your page, I was a classically trained watchmaker (retired nearly 20 years ago) nice to see the trade being carried on, unfortunatly my hands and eyes no longer allow me to enjoy the practice ( its all I can do to to keep my old Rodania divers watch running without destroying it). Restored many classic watches, a couple of Patek Phillipe and Breitlings particularlly come to mind. I hear the jubilation of a successful project in your voice as you place the balance and it goes to full bank. looking forward to seeing more !!

What a fabulous video and a great way to unwind after a stressful day (no pun intended). I know where to come should I ever drop a Rolex exposed to salt water. Can I ask how much a restoration of this kind would actually cost at today's rates?

great job and patience glad you were able to help the lady out - and restore a vintage watch at the same time. Enjoyed the vid and the entire process.

Never knew there were so many parts inside of a watch. Very intriguing. Also at 36:14 that moment where it comes back to life is really satisfying.
