Of all the ubiquitous things in our environment, roads are probably one of the least noticed. Our roads see tremendous volumes of traffic and withstand considerable variations in weather and climate, and they do it on a pretty tight budget. That’s really only possible because of all the scientists, engineers, contractors, and public works crews keeping up with this simple but incredible material called asphalt.

the official reason why my city is tearing down roman cobblestone roads for asphalt is that cobblestone roads make a noise when you sit in a car. Which is silly by itself on sidestreets with not much traffic and on sidestreets with okay traffic. I get it for mainroads but still... this official statement is silly

I've wondered if it would be possible to put pigment and/or reflective particles into asphalt as it's being laid to eliminate the need to paint on top of it, which tends wears off fairly quickly...that may interfere with the recycling aspect though

Road budgets are not tight at all, especially in US they pour a lot of money into an excessive road network to accommodate for scattered and low-density suburbs and to let everyone drive by car - instead of using public transit or even bikes, like in most of Europe.

My city doesn't redo its road often, but last time I saw them tearing up a city road, it looked like a concrete road beneath it. Looked like the curb was super tall and ran the entire way up. It was hard to get a good look because I couldn't get too close being construction area and all, and it looked like dust or something over the surface since it just had the upper layer torn off further obscuring the view. Whatever it was, it looked distinctly different than other base layers that I've seen. They generally look like densely packed rock, not a smooth surface.

of course neat video. but it ended a bit abruptly for me. i was left wondering if those machines just apply heat and scrape the asphalt off the road or if it is more difficult.

You are an engineer, you might know the answer: why on Earth are so many American stoves (including yours) designed so that controls are placed on the back wall, so that you have to reach over your boiling pot or sizzling frying pan in order to adjust them?

Vor 15 Tage
bazoo513
bazoo513

@Mr. C Over here in Europe, if the stovetop in a part of the same appliance as the oven, the controls are usually at the top of the front face (in that case your child accessibility argument would indeed apply). If the stove is separate, then usually along one side. Some manufacturers of infrared or inductive cooktops place touch controls along the front edge - a _hate_ that - one keeps touching them inadvertently, and, while they are usually intelligent enough not to confuse that with intentional change of settings, they keep beeping in protest. But during my one longer stay in the US out of hotel (in Argonne National Laboratory campus) I kept burning myself with steam while adjusting the stove. (And I once accidentally engaged cleaning cycle on the oven while something was in it - I managed to open all windows before the fire alarm tripped (o: )

The thing about asphalt pavement is that yes, it technically is almost 100% recyclable. However, that is extremely rare. Depending on the mix and project, only a very small amount (less than 10%) of old asphalt millings can be used in the the making of a new batch of asphalt.

Was hoping you'd show more footage of the recycling of old and making of new asphalt. Like go to the factory? They just repaved the 710 Fwy in Long Beach, California with asphalt over the top of the old concrete which was cracking. Before they replaced it with blacktop they patched it in places with this special, super fast drying concrete... *Question: What is the name of that patch concrete and was it developed to repair aircraft runways in war zones???*

So, asphalt uses bitumen, which can be obtained by refining petroleum. But some petroleum is naturally in the form of bitumen, like the Athabasca oil sands. So, why isn't naturally occurring bitumen sent to construction instead of being converted into petroleum and undergoing refining?
