Well, they weren't. This was just a regular watch given away by Apple as a freebie.

I remember when I bought probably one of the first smart watches, the Microsoft watch that could get the very most basic internet access, pretty much for weather, news and stocks. I think I was 12 at the time. I actually still have it, but the battery is dead. It had a charging base similar to an aftermarket Apple Watch charging stand, and instead of wireless charging it had 2 contacts that had to make up to charge. I remember feeling soooo cool because no one else, and I mean no one, at my school had a watch like that, the occasional person had the calculator watch, but that was as advanced as anyone had then.
