You should consider expanding on electrical metallurgy for another secret physics video. Because even nonmagnetic metals and nonmetals can like aluminum and silicon carbide can conduct electricity and are used for some electronics applications. I never tested it, but I want to know if electrified aluminum, brass, aluminum-nickel-brass alloys, and SiC become magnetic when strong currents are flowing through.

I loved this video! Great video! I think all Australian runways have two digit numbers (ie a leading zero).

Vor Monat
Daniel Jensen
Daniel Jensen

Regarding the leading zero: It should definitely be there, for clarity. If you hear "ZERO SIX" you KNOW without a doubt that it's runway 6. If you only hear "SIX" you COULD have missed a leading "TWO", so there's a potential that you think it's runway 6, when it's actually runway 26. If you expect two digits at all times, it may avoid confusion. Under this system, receiving only one digit should cause you, as a pilot, to verify the missing leading digit. Omitting the leading zero causes you to happily accept a faulty one digit runway number.

Vor Monat
nirfz
nirfz

While i do think 2 digits are better, what is missing (or in one case almost missing as someone mentioned it but seemingly got ignored) is 1: Every order or information given over radio by ATC must be read back and so gets checked for correctness. (and is also recorded both times and stored for a while, in case there's an accident and the investigation needs to find the root causes or what else went wrong) And 2: Before the flight, the aircrew are doing a briefing, so they inform themselves what to expect on the destination airport and the alternates (in case they can't make it to the original destination for whatever reason). They have charts where they can look at the directions and numbering of the runways, navigational aids on the route and at the destination ect. And also before the flight they send that briefing information out, so every ATC involved with the flight route gets the information when that flight is supposed to show up in their space of responsibility, where it's comming from and where it's going. This also is needed in more crowded areas so that staffing of ATC can be increased when more traffic is going to turn up in their area. (each ATC person only handles a certain number of aircraft at the same time to keep it safe and manageable, so more traffic, more ATC personel...)

Vor 26 Tage
nirfz
nirfz

@bob mcgee No, they aren't. The repainting thanks to natural "erosion" happens more frequent than the repainting due to changes in magnetic north. (If you go south a bit more like central europe for example, there was a change 2 years back and the last one was more than 10 years before that.) I know it was meant as a joke, but i couldn't help it...

Vor 26 Tage
Jake
Jake

@jae "a 6 or 26 could both be right" Only in an insanely odd situation (those runways are 160 deg off of each other). And you should be verifying runway clearances multiple times anyway so the point is moot.

Vor Monat
Jiima
Jiima

@Jake Exactly this. In flight, pilots and ATC both need to be brief over the radio. So much so, that deciphering ATC shorthand still gives me a bit of anxiety (admittedly, most of my flight time is out of non-towered airports). Runway incursions and accidents that occur due to people talking over one another on the radio are well documented. If a pilot or ATC believes they have misheard a runway direction or they need clarification, they will ask for it. And just as you said, instructions are given out in preparation, then again when cleared, and repeated back to ATC by the pilot in each instance. There are several layers of redundancy here, not least of all would be pre-flight planning on the part of the pilot. This is not as big an issue as people in the comments seem to think.

@Jimmy with 5 parallel runways, you tend to not mentally align those runway markers to actual magnetic headings anymore like PVG (Shanghai airport).

@Peacewind Except the Northern Domestic airspace doesn't include big chunks of the territories, nor does it include the three largest airports in those territories (Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Iqaluit all use deg M)

@Boffin Grey said it in a technically correct way. "When flying over her territories". Look at what the NDA mostly covers. So he technically is not wrong.

That's because he included a 5 min section about Canada which was 4m40s of incorrect info. Canada uses degM at almost all airports

On many modern airliners particularly long haul ones they have a true north switch that changes all their instruments to true north, can be toggled off again for magnetic north

This is probably my favorite video of Grey's. The continued joke of physics turning into a special lesson, the topic changing from airplanes to geography to the many true norths to what magnets are, all beautiful. I especially love the obvious improvement over time, the little animations in this episode were fantastic, like when the classroom appeared, made of hexagonal tiles because hexagons are the bestagons. Lastly, the perfect choice to release this as a premiere, because it just keeps escalating and we have no idea how long until the video ends. 10/10, likely one of my favorite videos on this entire website.

I know how you feel, Grey. It feels like every time I go to look up a 'simple' question, I too end up having to research at least 3 under-layers of other related subjects to make sense of the answer for the original question. No stone will be left unturned, whether you want it to be or not. . Oh, if only the universe and its everything-in-it wasn't all so interesting, or if I was only less curious about it all!
