An enormous thanks to Prof. Steven Strogatz - this video would not have been possible without him. Much of the script-writing was inspired and informed by his wonderful book Sync, and his 2004 TED talk. He is a giant in this field, and has literally written the book on chaos, complexity, and synchronization. It was hard to find a paper in this field that Steven (or one of his students) didn't contribute to. His Podcast "The Joy of X" is wonderful - please listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts www.quantamagazine.org/tag/th...

Your statement that it was the bridge causing people to walking sync is not correct. It's a feedback loop where the people got the bridge oscillating slightly then the people started oscillating more with the bridge causing more oscillation that caused the people to walk in a way that caused more higher amplitude oscillations.

The examples you point too were not in keeping with the Laws of Physics. Ex.1 Two people running together...each person can simply alter their own speed in order to "sync up" Ex.2 ...concerning the bridge..."just ten more people, 166, made the difference". You overlooked the fact that not everyone involved weighed exactly the same, so the "exact" number of 166 means little. I see where you try to reasonably prove a point, but there is more involved if humans are the subject. Ex.3. We don't know if the randomly clapping audience perhaps saw the stage performer possibly make a visual gesture, which triggered everyone to "agree" at the very same moment, resulting in an "approving" response to begin clapping together in a positive, audible manner and in willful unison. As a "learned scholar", you pose a weak argument, in my opinion. I did enjoy seeing the pendulums sync up though...that is explainable. Take away the rolling pedestal so they are all sitting on a stable surface where they can't "throw their weight around" and they would never sync up. Laws of Physics. Ya can't beat em.

Interesting and educational. I think it is intuitive that motions in the bridge will tend to create compensatory movements in the steps of people walking on it. Which, of course, cause increasing synchronization and more oscillations up to and including disastrous collapse.

Very amazing... Things which we call is synchronized is limited for human senses for which they can predict repeatability but the existance of universe is in its constant changing. May be we can find synchronization in one SCALE. But, as we enlarge or shorten the SCALE far and beyond human senses, the synchronization gets disturbed and keeps on disturbing till where we cannot imagine..

It seems really obvious though, doesn't it? Anybody who has made music, or worked with musical instruments knows if a certain frequency doesn't work, all its harmonics wont work as well, so if you say no to k, you should say no to k/2, k/3, k/4, etc. The fact that they thought 1Hz was fine but is exactly half of the frequency they were trying to avoid seems like a major oversight to me... Can anybody with engineering experience explain why you wouldn't take into account harmonics for a bridge?

information. at 5:34, why not just say its plain old newtonian physics.??? as to the bridge, it can be seen that, at any point in time the number of people unintentionally walking in-step can be sufficient to cause minor oscillation. ONCE oscillation begins,. All the people react to it; so, that eighty percent of them are walking, in step. and, the magnitude of the oscillation steadily Increases. googletranslate

My neighborhood had a large, almost olympic size pool, and I could take my floaty thing and just push down in the pool and keep pushing down timing it with the waves, and after just a minute or so the entire pool was rolling with two foot waves splashing people suntanning on the side. Then a bunch of people would yell at me to stop.

Would it be possible to measure the one-way speed of light using synchronized pendulums? As long as the time it takes light to travel from one pendulum to the other is definitely less than the time it takes the pendulums to oscillate, you could theoretically measure the phase of the first pendulum when the light is emitted and the phase of the second pendulum when the light is received, and from that the time it took for light to travel the distance between the pendulums. While writing this I realized that the pendulum probably aren't really synchronized, they only appear synchronized when the pendulums are not very far apart, so this probably doesn't work.
