I have one question and I'd like to know if you've ever considered what would happen if Azula either had a life that went right OR saw a glimpse of reality from the audiences perspective. I think that would be a very interesting concept, especially when the reality of her situation is so pitiful and horrible.

Weird to say this but at the end, I relate to Azula. I also had an abusive father and a depressed mother who preferred my older sibling. I only ever received positive attention from my father, who i tried to impress to avoid abuse, and criticism from my mother no matter what I did. I think it’s because I reminded her of my father in looks and i was much more emotionally guarded than my mother and sister. In my situation, I was left with just my mother who loved my sister and resented me because I remind her of my father who traumatised her. My sister was “rescued” by my mother who ensured we were out of that situation and loved her but I was left with no positive reinforcement or love. In a sense, i missed my abuser because I understood what I had to do to be appreciated and feel loved but with my mother, it never seemed to matter what I did - I was always in the wrong. I understood a hit a lot more than I understood the silent treatment. I don’t know what that says about me but hey, interesting to hear it out into words.

Interesting breakdown, but he missed the part where personality disorders aren't diagnosed until adulthood because there is still a lot of development from 14 to adulthood, especially cognitive and emotional development. My best guess is she could be diagnosed with a conduct disorder (which, if I recall, is a precursor to being diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder), which is characterized by aggression, rule breaking (although the opposite is seen with Azula), and disregard for others. It's a good video, and the only thing I didn't like is he didn't touch on how children and adults have different diagnostic criteria in the DSM, and as he often reminded us, Azula is still a child.

The scene where azula actually felt bad when ty lee was mad at zuko, also talked to ty lee about how she was jealous of ty lee for getting all the boys attention and even apologising to her, shows that ty lee is actually the 3rd/2nd person she really cares about besides her father until she became angrier and hurt by her issues and abandonment.

One thing that’s interesting is that Ozai perfectly encapsulates narcissistic parenting, where a self centered parent emotionally messes up the typical family dynamic. It’s almost eery. When there is more than one child, there is usually a Golden Child (the narcissistic parent’s favorite) and a Scapegoat (the child that receives reprimand and punishment). It’s pretty obvious which is which in Azula and Zuko’s case. Ozai prefers Azula no matter what obvious issues she expresses because the narcissistic parent sees their children as extensions of themselves. When the Golden Child expresses traits that the parent is proud of in themselves (like fire bending) it is rewarded with praise, even if Azula is a scummy person in all other aspects. It’s quite likely that Ozai’s praise of Azula caused it so that Ursa’s reprimands felt like personal attacks; after all, in Azula’s mind, if her dad encouraged her to do bad things and scare people, and that she was better than everyone, than that must mean her mom is being unreasonable. However, being the narcissistic parent’s favorite comes with caveats; because the parent raises the child with praise for relatively inconsequential things in the larger scheme of functioning as an individual (Ozai only encourages Azula in aspects of how she can benefit HIM, rather than how she can function as a person), the GC grows up with a severely distorted sense of right and wrong inherited by the NP. This often results in the GC becoming a narcissistic parent when they grow up. Zuko is the obvious scapegoat; Zuko isn’t as good as Azula, but he certainly is no flake when it comes to all of the typical fire bender stuff. And yet, no matter what, Ozai never praises him for the same stuff he does Azula because, in Ozai’s eyes, Azula is the GC that can do no wrong by him (only because she gives him what he wants) and Zuko is inherently a failure for wanting the love and affection that Ozai owes to BOTH his kids unconditionally. Ursa is the only sane parent, but to be honest, I can’t see any real way that she could have put a stop to Ozai’s brainwashing of their children aside from straight up taking the kids and leaving (and Azula might have protested or fought back, or Ozai could have sent soldiers after them). With a lot of real life abusive parents, cutting contact is often the only option, and it’s not always possible. I think it’s likely that Ursa’s protectiveness over Zuko was out of defense; she realized that Ozai targeted him over Azula, and rationalized that she should protect him more, not realizing that she was leaving Azula wide open for being preyed on emotionally. It’s quite likely that she didn’t consider the damage done to Azula because she was Ozai’s favorite, and therefore less likely to be physically harmed. Iroh is definitely divorced enough from the dynamic to recognize how unhealthy it is (especially since he loved his own son unconditionally) and encourages Zuko to avoid repeating the cycle of abuse. People wonder why Iroh didn’t help Azula, but unfortunately a lot of individuals raised in unhealthy environments are screwed from the beginning; every attempt by Iroh to connect with Azula fell flat because she was completely entrenched in her nationalist worldview, and anything Iroh said would have either been seen as weakness or reinforcement of her beliefs. Ultimately, I see Iroh taking Zuko under his wing as trying to save the only member of the family who still had a chance at normalcy.

MHA can only dream of having anything like this, they way the story (in the manga) handled Dabi, Endeavor and Shoto was frankly disappointing and a complete waste of potential, which i know is the result of shonen having to conform to effed up social norms of the east (Japan) about abuse and family "values", that's why i like western animation more.

When I saw Azula crying uncontrollably it put a hole in my heart, I felt deeply sorry for her and I understood what she was going through. When I was young I thought things like this weren’t as serious that it actually was, but when I had my first mental breakdown I felt like no one loved me, that the world hated me. I felt so tired of being strong. I couldn’t stop crying it was so overwhelming. it was a terrible experience. But whenever I talk about her arc in a mature manner, everyone thinks it’s weird that I’m really mature for my age, and that only adults understand things like this. Believe me I’m not even a teenager yet and I don’t know everything, and I’m probably overreacting, but I feel like kids can still understand what was happening in the show and why azula was suffering. Azula thought that her mother didn’t love her and who she was, but azula knew that if she changed her ways of controlling people with fear, manipulation and ruthlessness, her father would not love her or lose interest in her. So, azula kept on pushing herself to gain her father’s approval, she wanted some kind of love or affection from him, the Same affection Ursa gave Zuko. Seeking approval was her drive. But when she lost her friends in the process she she started to question if all her effort was worth it. Now with her friends gone, the only emotional support, the only thing that could keep her going, was her father. And when she realized that he never cared about her, or loved her, she broke. Her drive, the thing that kept her going, the only thing that made her feel worthy and that kept her sanity, was just a facade. An illusion that she lost everything for. When she lost her drive she lost her sanity and sense of self worth. We are all like a tree. If we don’t give it what it needs to grow daily, if we don’t give it love and kindness, it turns into an ugly tree. And if we give it nothing at all, it dies.

god I loved this show. can I also add how azala's only forms of power over others clashes with her personality? As previously mentioned, Azula's personality as the start was based off of perfectionalism, but her sources of power, which are her physical power, which are fire and lightning, and her phycological powers, which are based off fear and intimidation, are not always perfect, but instead, chaotic?

This makes me reflect on everyone's challenges and obstacles in life that are caused by our thoughts. We all have a few of these deep down in our own souls, which is why I believe that even curing one of them is an amazing accomplishment. Discovering the problem is a challenge in itself, where we might have to look in ugly places and memories. But even with this discovery, surpassing these means confronting a monster that controlled us our whole lives, and personally I can't think of many things as scary as that. If you are truly working on this, if you muster the courage to defy the monster, then know that I admire you.

I’ve seen a lot of people criticize Ursa for being a bad mother and it really upsets me. Ursa was just as much a victim of Ozai’s abuse as Zuko and Azula. Most parents in that situation do everything they can to protect their children, but with the constant barrage of abuse on themselves, they make mistakes too.

Vor 7 TageJohn Babylon
Sociopath. Azula is a high functioning sociopath. This is never more clearly seen then in her relationship with Ty Lee and her need for power. The ultimate euphoria for a sociopath is the acquisition of a willing victim: someone who endures the emotional, psychological and physical torture and thanks the sociopath for it. And when that is gone, sociopaths often descend in to madness, paranoia and rage. Which is exactly what Azula does when she is abandoned by her father and betrayed by her allies. Azula is a superbly written high functioning sociopath formed by feelings of paranoia and abandonment.
Vor 7 TageMolly
whenever people talk about azula's fear of becoming the main target for her father's abuse, i always wonder: what was going on for those three years where zuko was banished and she was the only child in the house?
Vor 7 TagexX NoWay xX
also this 22:07 it's by far the best proof that she has empathy and there's no doubt about it to me she genuinely looks worried in a moment where she feels nobody is witnessing this "weakness" and inconsistency, but quickly recomposes herself when Ty Lee looks in her direction. so she does feel things but puts a lot of work in making sure that nobody knows and it's very interesting to think about. One thing that really bothers me though is that this and at least 90% of people seem to forget she's 14 here. 14! Most people probably know this but i think few people actually understand what that means and judge her as if she's an unbendable adult and as if everything that she does and says completely sets in stone what she'll forever be and can't become anymore it doesn't really work that way while i certainly can't speak for everyone, i'm not the same POS i was at 14 and THEN there's all of the abuse Azula and Zuko went through, and taking the most commonly used arguments as to why Zuko deserved redemption but not her into consideration i really have to say that her being born with all that raw talent and everything else about her that Ozai knew how to utilize perfectly definitely wasn't her being born lucky but the exact opposite. I feel like this is why Ursa couldn't reach her even though she might've tried a million times, not just because of Ozai basically being in the way or her having to take even more care of Zuko because of Ozai's neglect of him (if Ozai's spotlight was on Zuko instead it would've changed everything undoubtedly), but also because Azula herself already had this view and related expectations of herself she needed to fulfill. So looking at all of this i really dislike the way she's often talked about. She's a child and Ozai achieved absolutely everything he had in mind for her 'cause she was under the impression she was doing the right things, and it's so freaking sad to see somebody's whole world collapse like that no matter if it is a twisted one or not.

It is kinda tragic that it is she being "born lucky" what made her unlucky, because her success made her to stay close to Ozai and absorbs the influence of her father, chaining her to the craziness of the cult of right by might of the Fire Nation, while Zuko being "lucky to be born" made him fail constantly, question himself constantly, an eventually, go out, far from the craziness, breathe, and "suffer" his uncle instead of his father. And that is the tragedy. It was impossible to help Azula. Her own success kept her in her prison. Her constant work to be good and perfect was the best guard. An how deny that "chain" to her without becoming the enemy in her eyes? Zuko was "lucky" to be burn by Ozai. It gave Iroh a chance.
Vor 11 TageVon Flooferton
Azula's name being so close to Azulon's, I can't imagine that helped wrt how Ursa perceived her. Names can do a lot to color your perception of even a pet animal, like a cat or dog, and this can magnify when applied to a human child with low empathy.

19:20 Just to be clear that's an idealogical commitment not a scientific one. The first law of behavioral gentices is that all personality traits are heritable. The second is that the effect of genes is greater then the effect of the environment. It's fine to have an idealoglogy, but I don't see why we can't just say something like; "The effect of genes is beyond our control so it makes more sense to focus on the environment as that's something that we can influence." I guess it's not the biggest deal in the world, but I don't know if burdening parents and therapists this way is healthy. Some people are born with predispositions that a therapist can never help with. And as long as you take care of a child's basic needs parents don't really make a difference. Whatever most people probably won't read this at this point, and if they do it will probably be to Strawman and insult me.

While Ursa did show some favoritism towards Zuko...some of her interactions with Azula, namely the telling her off, do not seem to me as inherently bad. She should not have said 'what's wrong with this child'. However in many of the other instances Azula was acting out, she was being rude or even cruel. And as a parent, you need to set boundaries for your child, tell them that certain behaviors are unacceptable.

I just realised something, in The Search, we can see (another one of) the reasons Azula believes her mother has been conspiring against her ever since she was born. Ozai hated Zuko and tried to get rid of him from the day _he_ was born. Azula seeing the family dynamic; Ozai hates Zuko and 'loves' Azula, Ursa loves Zuko and "hates" Azula. She likely assumed that her mother tried to get rid of her just like how Ozai was going to get rid of Zuko. Where Ozai tried to kill Zuko because he *didn't* have power, Ursa is now trying to kill Azula because she has power.
