3:20... It feels more like a mash up of 1971 - 2001. Remember, a lot of the minor characters are based of stars who was big during that time period... Hakim in Stray Dog Strut (Kareem Abdul Jabbar), Coffee in Musroom Samba (Pam Greer) & Decker in Heavy Metal Queens (Woody Allen... with the Asian Goddess on the ship a visual metaphor for Allen's wife/step-daughter Soon-Yi Previn).

I really enjoyed the video, but I was a bit confused about a choice that was made. Cowboy Bebop has one of the best English dubs in existence. With that in mind, why did you guys choose the English sub for all of the references to the show? I was listening to the video while driving and almost looked down just to understand the references.

Such an amazing anime. Just recently found these videos and I'm in love. Philosophical and psychological analysis of movies, books, and anime is how I grew up. Real stories don't stop at action, they delve, invisibly, so deep into the psyche that it's absolutely enlightening. That's what makes Cowboy Bebop such a classic. Did I mention I'm a real private investigator too? Goals.

Imagine this kind of scify or cyberpunk not as a less advanced future, but as a more advanced past. Like they start exploring the solar system in the 80s or 90s. There are simular concepts in other scify subgenres. For example in Dune they are exploring the whole universe without using modern computers, because they are illegal after a war against AI. Concepts like this sound unrealistic at first, until you realize that there were people on the moon during the 60s based on technological research that starts in the 40s during WW2. It looks crazy but it's not that far fetched as it feels at first.

Honestly I really don’t care about this anime. I saw several episodes of it and I wouldn’t say I got bored I just didn’t care about it. Black lagoon is honestly more fun to watch. It had a lot of crazy stuff in it that I loved. Revy is is way better then Faye. she’s a bad ass and she loves to swear every five seconds. I think she said the F word like eight times in 10 seconds. Yes Cowboy Bebop does have some good jazz music, nice western style to it, and does have some fun stuff but in my opinion I just think black lagoon was just way more funner to watch. But in general I think attack on Titan is still not the best animes out there. I would even go so far as to say it’s one of if not the best stories I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen anime that I think has better soundtrack, better animation, better storytelling and with my more deep and interesting themes.

I often wondered if a sequel series would ever be possible with Andy (the rich cowboy turned samurai cosplayer bounty hunter) and possibly Electra (from the Knockin' on Heaven's Door movie) joining up with Jet and Faye on the Bebop. Would've been interesting if they met up with Ein and a grown-up Ed during their adventures. Just a dream, I suppose. Cowboy Bebop was perfect as it was and didn't need any unnecessary sequels or spin-offs.

One thing I think is really interesting: Jet is haunted by his past in his failings of being a cop, he has to come back and deal with the people who got away, and as a husband his wife just got up and left one day. Spike dying can be felt by Jet as a continuation, similar to failing as a cop because Faye asks him if he should go after him and he declines. If Spike died maybe he would regret that. It's a continuation of Faye's past because she lost everyone she knew, and the lawyer she fell in love with just died (faked his death rather) but just left her one day. Even though she confronts Spike in the ship as he's leaving, he's still leaving her. And for Spike, he never gets satisfied in believing that he was alive, even after Julia dies, until he dies. I just think it's interesting, as the end says, "you'll carry that weight" the ending never really sees them reach some certain satisfied conclusion about the past except for Jet, but now with Spike gone, it's more or less more of the same. As if once the weight was lifted from Jet's past, and Faye gets somewhere with hers, they get another load to carry.

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him." That's part of a much longer thought he expresses. People too often only quote the first part and miss the whole picture. The point is that humans have become, and perhaps always were, so awful that even (and sometimes especially) the most religious among us have killed God. We murdered him like we murder each other. It's not about atheism, it's about how rotten we all are if we choose to be.

More fun facts. The death flags: In session 1, Katerina and Asimov foreshadowed Spike and Julia's endgame (i.e. their deaths). Both Katerina and Spike wished to escape the life of crime they led and have a new life elsewhere with their partner. Katerina expresses her wish in Session 1. Katerina: I can finally escape the low life I've had here. I can finally live happily on Mars. In session 25, we are shown a flashback of Spike expressing this same wish that Katerina had. Spike: We'll leave here. We'll escape from this world. Julia: And then what are we going to do? Spike: Just live a life of freedom somewhere. Just like watching a dream... “Road to the West” played just before Asimov and Katerina died, and again just before Spike went to see Julia, thus linking the two stories. These two scenes are the only times the song is ever used in the entire series. These two scenes are also visually linked (both include dogfights in outer space and show similar shots of Spike and the Swordfish II and an armed fleet that will ultimate prevent the lovers escape). Btw, going west is a reference to going towards death. Both Katerina and Spike have the realization that they will never get the Happily Ever After they always wanted. Katerina has her realization just before she dies when a fleet of cops block her and Asimov's escape. Spike has his realization while Julia is holding him at the cemetery. He has just escaped a fleet of syndicate assassins and knows more will be on the way. He knows they won't be able to escape in the long run. Both Katerina and Spike get the same expressions on their faces when they have their realizations. The dialogue said in one scene answers the dialogue said in the other, as if Katerina were reading out Spike's thoughts. Julia to Spike: Let's just run away somewhere. Truly escape from this world and go somewhere no one else is... Just the two of us... Katerina: We can't run anymore. There's no way we can get away. Both Katerina and Spike witnessed the death of their partner. Both their partners were shot to death. Both hold their partners' body in their arms. Both Katerina and Spike get slashed across the abdomen which resulted in something red spilling out. Both their stories end with a pull out shot of their death scene. [Check out the scenes side by side. Watch Katerina and Asimov's last scene and then the scene where Spike fights the syndicate fleet, the scene where he reunites with Julia, the scene when Julia's dies and Spike's final scenes. The visual evidence is very compelling. There are multiple visual parallels.] In session 3, Spike walks by a film screen which reads only a true samurai can kill him like the... [the rest is obscured by Spike's body]. Vicious, for all his faults, was a true warrior and fatally wounded Spike with a katana. In session 5, Spike got the ace of spades at the end of the episode. That is the death card. In session 13, during an auditory flashback we hear Vicious tell Spike that he is the only one that can kill him. This is again brought up in session 26, just before the two face off. Vicious, again, proclaims that he is the only one who can kill Spike and set him free. In Session 13, during a flashback sequence Spike and Julia discuss his eyes. Spike: My left eye sees the past... Julia: Then what about your right eye...? Spike then wakes up in the snow having been recently shot with a tranquilizer gun. The camera focuses on his right eye. Spike finds a crow standing on his chest. He asks the crow a question. Spike: Which way is west? [The crow caws loudly before spreading it's black wings and flying away] A crow is an omen of death. Also, there are various cultures (Ancient Egyptian, Jewish, Celtic, Chinese, etc.) in which death is associated with going west. In session 13, Faye attempts to stop Gren from going to face Vicious by holding him at gunpoint and then shooting her gun. Gren goes anyway and is killed by Vicious. The same thing happens with Spike in session 26. In session 16, Jet's ex-partner makes this ominous assertion. Fad: The people that go against the syndicate lose, Jet. They lose big. Either they give up like you did or they die young. In session 17, after eating a special mushroom Spike hallucinates that he is climbing up a stairway that stretches up above and leads to a glowing white entrance. He comes across an informative frog that lets him know where he is headed. Frog: Hey, mister. This is a stairway to heaven. You know that, right? In session 21, Jet tells Meifa there's no way out. Jet: It's impossible for someone to leave when they know that much. Once you join a syndicate they own you forever. In Session 1, Laughing Bull foretells of Spike's death being brought on by a woman. Laughing Bull: Swimming bird will meet a woman. The bird will be hunted by this woman. And then death. Spike: One more time. Laughing Bull: What's that? Spike: I was killed once before by a woman. Spike is speaking of Julia. From the first episode Laughing Bull has foreshadowed that Spike will die and that his death will be connected to a woman. In Knockin' on Heaven’s Door, Spike almost dies and Laughing Bull tells him it is not yet his time. Laughing Bull: It was not a good day for you to die, so you did not. That is all. Laughing Bull also tells Spike that the past, present and future all all connected. Laughing Bull: Know this Swimming Bird, this blue eye perceives all things conjoined. The past, the future, and the present. Everything flows and all is connected. This eye is not merely seeing reality. It is touching the truth. Open the eye of truth... There is nothing to fear. Spike: Yeah... I know what you mean. In session 26, Laughing Bull predicts Spike's imminent death the scene directly after Julia dies. When Jet denies this Laughing Bull tells him not to fear death. Laughing Bull: Do not fear Death. Death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light. But, if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity... When Spike leaves the Bebop to confront Vicious the song "See You Space Cowboy" plays. The lyrics begin over romantic images of Spike and Julia together. "Everything is already over", You say with closed ears The words only flow Towards a tomorrow without peace "There's nothing that won't change" Even if my life ends This love will not disappear It's something that will live forever Even if dreams are hidden in darkness I got a rainbow Rainbow in your hands... The song is a proclamation of undying love which implies that Spike and Julia will be together again in the afterlife. In the penultimate scene of the series Spike finally sees Julia with his eye that sees his present. Julia is cast in a white glowing light. We hear Julia's last words, "It's all a dream." We see Spike reflected in her *blue eye*. Spike agrees with her, "Yeah. Just a bad dream." He's still looking into her blue eye. Then everything is engulfed in a white light. Everything fades to white. Next scene is of Spike walking down the stairs. Spike smiles, does the finger gun, "bang." and he's down. The entire syndicate is now cast in a white light. The song "Blue" begins to play: Don't wake me from the dream It's really everything it seems I'm so free No black and white in the blue Everything is clearer now Life is just a dream, you know That's never-ending I'm ascending There is a tone switch from dreams being "bad" to dreams being something you never want to be woken from. When Spike was engulfed by the white light, he had a revelation. He knows he is going to a better place. He knows he is going to be with Julia again. He dies happy and at peace. At the very end we see a star go out but never fall. In session 13, Laughing Bull said that a falling star was a pitiful soul who could not find his way to the great other. Child: A star just fell from the sky. Laughing Bull: That is not an ordinary star, my son. That star is the tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battles somewhere on this planet. Child: What warrior is it? Laughing Bull: A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm. Where the great spirit awaits us all. Spike makes it to the spirit that awaits us all. His star goes out. He is free.

Losing her love was so painful as to be considered a form of death. He was left in a detached dream-like purgatory from that day on. In Session 26, Julia is shot in front of Spike. White doves fly by in slow motion. Horror, shock, and agony are expressed in Spike's left eye. He screams her name, drops his weapon, and runs to her. He takes her in his arms. Hears her last words, which are inaudible to the audience. Spike looks down at his lost love and then up to the sky. The camera is now focused on Spike's right eye, which is shaking in a disturbing manner. The camera zooms into Spike's pupil and everything fades to black. The next scene is of Laughing Bull predicting Spike's imminent death. Holding Julia's coat, Vicious speaks of Spike. Vicious: A beast that has lost his place. He has nowhere to return to now. He will come. Vicious is both right and wrong. Spike will come, but he does have somewhere to return to one last time. Two rose petals are shown blowing away in the wind. Spike returns to the Bebop and tells Jet a story. An allegory about his life which he uses to explain why he will never return. Spike: There once was a tiger striped cat. This cat died a million deaths, revived and lived a million lives, and he was owned by various people who he didn't really care for. The cat wasn't afraid to die. Then one day the cat became a stray cat, which meant he was free. He met a white female cat, and the two of them spent their days together happily. Well, years passed, and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger striped cat cried a million times, and then he died too. Except this time, he didn't come back to life. Jet is keenly aware that Spike's death looms in the horizon. He is wary of the tale's implications. When Spike gets up to leave, Jet asks him one last question. Jet: Is it for the girl? Spike: [beat] She's dead. There's nothing I can do for her now. This is true. Julia is dead. There is nothing Spike can do for her. This does not lessen the impact she has on the events that are about to unfold. Jet understands this. Upon hearing of Julia's death, he has a resigned if devastated reaction. He knows exactly what this means for Spike. Faye confronts Spike while holding him at gunpoint. She knows that he is marching towards his death. Faye: Where are you going? Why, are you going? You told me once, to forget the past, ‘cause it doesn’t matter, but you’re the one still tied to the past, Spike! Spike does not deny this. Instead, he explains the truth about his eyes. The camera spans from his left eye to his right eye. Spike: Look at my eyes, Faye. One of them is a fake because I lost it in an accident. Since then, I've been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So, I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture. Faye: Don’t tell me things like that; you’ve never told me anything about yourself, so don’t tell me now! Spike: I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was all over. This is not the first time Spike has expressed this sentiment. One of his most revelatory quotes was said in the teaser for Ballad of Fallen Angels. Spike: The music box is broken, or is it? It starts to play, and a haunting tune fills the air. I wake suddenly from my dream. There is no music box! And yet there it is. A tiny one nestled in my hand. And I awaken from my dream again. As if I were peeling an onion. It’s a dream no matter how far I go. I can never reach reality. Trapped in an endless nightmare. Spike is so affected by the loss of the woman he loves that even an item she once possessed haunts him. It is her death that has finally woken him from his detached dream-like state. Faye shares with Spike that her memory has returned. She explains that there was nowhere for her to go back to. She pleads with him to stay. Spike ignores her please and instead leaves her with these parting words. Spike: I’m not going there to die; I’m going to find out if I’m really alive. I have to do it, Faye. Faye is not comforted by this statement. The audience should not be comforted either. Spike's words eerily echo what Jet said to him in session 25. Jet: Men only think about the past right before their death, as if they were searching frantically for proof that they were alive. Faye cries and shoots off her gun. An act reminiscent of the 21-gun salute that is used in the military to honor the fallen. Spike walks away from Faye without looking back. He is never shown thinking about anyone from the Bebop again. The song "See You Space Cowboy" plays as Spike leaves the Bebop. "Everything is already over", You say with closed ears The words only flow Towards a tomorrow without peace "There's nothing that won't change" Even if my life ends This love will not disappear It's something that will live forever Even if dreams are hidden in darkness I got a rainbow Rainbow in your hands... The camera zooms in on Spike's left eye. The eye that sees Spike's past. The lyrics begin as Spike is recalling romantic memories of Julia. He thinks of the first time he saw Julia and was captivated by her beauty. He thinks of a time when he made love to Julia and she cradled him in her arms. Given that Spike confided to Jet just the previous session that Julia was a part of him, the image shows a moment in Spike's life when he felt whole. Spike: She was a piece of me I had lost. She is my other half that I had longed for. The song continues to play as Spike attacks the syndicate. It is a ballad of undying love alluding to lovers being reunited in the afterlife. When Spike faces off against his hated rival, Vicious makes a proclamation. Vicious: So, you're finally awake. I told you before, Spike. I'm the only one who can kill you and set you free. Spike does not deny this. But makes a proclamation of his own. Spike: Those words apply to you as well, Vicious. During their fight, there comes a moment where the two disarm each other by swapping weapons. Vicious getting Spike's gun and Spike getting Vicious's katana. It is at this moment that Spike makes a statement of great significance to both men. Spike: Julia passed away. Let's end it all. The rivals return their weapons. Spike shoots Vicious but gets sliced across the abdomen. Vicious's death comes quickly, while Spike lingers as was foreshadowed. Vicious: Don't forget, a snake's venom poisons slowly after the bite. Spike watches Vicious's body fall to the ground, spends but a few of seconds looking at him, then looks up to the night's sky. The camera is focused on Spike's right eye. Now calm. Spike sees Julia. This is the first time in the entire series that Spike is shown seeing Julia with his right eye. In session 13, during an auditory flashback, Spike and Julia discuss his eyes. Spike: My left eye sees the past. Julia: What about your right eye? We do not hear his response. In the penultimate scene of the series, we are specifically shown what Spike sees with his eye that sees his present. He sees her. In Spike's vision, Julia is cast in a white light. She tells Spike that "It's all a dream." Spike is shown reflected back in Julia's eye. He glumly concurs with her. "Yeah. Just a bad dream." Spike is then completely engulfed by a blinding white light. The scene fades to white. This light is reminiscent of the divine light that is cast upon a soul that is ready to ascend to heaven. From white we transition to the final scene of the series. It is now day. A white light is now cast over the entire syndicate. Spike smiles, points a finger gun at the remaining syndicate goons and says "bang". This is a callback to Wen from session 6. As Wen was dying he asked Spike if he understood the relief that came with one's own death. In response, Spike threw Wen's harmonica up in the air, pretended to shoot it while saying "bang", but then said "as if". When Spike says "bang" this time he is acknowledging that he now understands that relief. Spike falls to the ground. He is never shown moving again. White doves are shown flying over Spike's body. White doves also flew by Julia when she died. The camera follows an ascension into the heavens, while the song "Blue" plays. The song's lyrics allude to a soul ascending to heaven. Free Wanna be free Gonna be free And move among the stars You know, they really aren't so far Feels so free Gotta know free Please Don't wake me from the dream It's really everything it seems I'm so free No black and white in the blue Everything is clearer now Life is just a dream, you know That's never-ending I'm ascending At the end of the credits a star goes out but never falls. In session 13, Laughing Bull informs the audience to what a falling star truly is. Laughing Bull: The tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battle. A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm. Where the great spirit awaits us all. Given that the star we are shown does not fall, it is reasonable to infer that the soul the star belonged to did make its way to the great spirit that awaits us all. That soul has broken away from the cycle of death and rebirth and is never coming back. As was foreshadowed to happen to Spike in the fable of the tiger striped cat, who followed his love into death and never returned. In Buddhism, breaking away from the cycle of death and rebirth is the ultimate release from suffering. In defeating his enemy and choosing to love his beloved eternally Spike is finally set free.
