In September of 1940, an 18-year-old mechanic named Marcel Ravidat was walking his dog, Robot, in the countryside of Southwestern France when the dog disappeared down a hole. Robot eventually returned but the next day, Ravidat went to the spot with three friends to explore the hole.
And after quite a bit of digging, they discovered a cave with walls covered with paintings, including over 900 paintings of animals, horses, stags, bison and also species that are now extinct, including a wooly rhinoceros. The paintings were astonishingly detailed and vivid with red, yellow and black paint made from pulverized mineral pigments that were usually blown through a narrow tube, possibly a hollowed bone, onto the walls of the cave. It would eventually be established that these artworks were at least 17,000 years old.

Ohai everybody! Something different today, make sure to watch it to the end! John Green is reading one of his reviews of our modern world, from his Podcast The Anthropocene Reviewed, which you should check out! https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/anthropocene-reviewed I haven't said this often enough publicly, but John and Hank Green, the Vlogbrothers and first generation science Youtubers are the reason Kurzgesagt exists today. In the very literal sense, that when I saw the first episode of Crash Course World History as a student in university I decided to try to do something similar. Doing Kurzgesagt was very hard for the first few years, for a variety of reasons. What made it easier was the kind advice and real world help we got from John and Hank to make this channel work and not burn out. Over the years we became friends – and to me the genuine nature of their work is still inspiring. My team and I try to do the same with Kurzgesagt. To be driven by the values we believe in and not by the outside world. So when John asked me if we maybe would illustrate and animate one of his essays, it was an easy yes. This is the result and we hope you like it. Thank you for watching and reading – Philipp

I think the interesting universal obsession with the hands really is a lot to do with how much they mean to us intrinsically as humans, without us even thinking about it Every single one of those cave-painting human societies got to where they were because of their hands; they were their tools; their very implements that allowed them to craft, hunt, eat, paint and do most of what was necessary to fascilitate their way of life And unlike the face, your hands are always there in front of you where you can see them, and they're almost certainly the one part of your body that you see the most It's probably the most pure extension of the self, because it's those hands that made those paintings in the first place, and your unique handprint is something you can see unlike your own face without a mirror You can almost go as far as to call them portraits

I think the same evidence that shows us that a quarter of women died during childbirth back then also shows that people heavily favored grape flavored candy over strawberry candy. That is to say that I just made that up because it suits my narrative, just like the childbirth thing.

I've been to Lascaux two years ago, there is something i have to add since Lascaux II is brought into the discussion. Lascaux II is the first, incomplete copy of the original cave, built on the same hill. The great numbers of visitors, and the vibration caused by their vehicles, turned out to be a problem for the cave. Since 2016 Lascaux IV has opened, a little bit further away, it's a nearly complete recreation of the cave, up to the fraction of a millimeter. In the museum several parts of the cave, like the ceilings and the wells, have been cloned at an accessible height so that visitors can see things that wouldn't normally be visible even in the real cave. There are even VR visors that allow you to visit the 3d model of the cave, with all the paintings and graffitis. It's not the original, but it's as close as it can get, and i believe we should be happy to see a copy if that means the original is being protected and preserved for the times to come. Should you feel the need to visit an original cave go to the grottes du Peche-Merle, it's one of the few original caves open to the public, access are limited to 700 ppl per day as to preserve the micro-climate inside, so reservation is almost mandatory. There's a 1:1 painting of prehistoric horses inside. tl;dr - i dont' share the sadness of not being able to access the original Lascaux cave for reasons; there are other original caves open to the public

The Cave of Altamira was discovered in Spain in 1878. It's authenticity was disputed until they started finding similar cave paintings in other parts of Europe. French archaeologist Emile Cartailhac even apologized in 1902 for having refuted it's authenticity for so long.

i absolutely LOVE the Anthropocene Reviewed. i love his voice, the jingles, and of course, the stories. they are our stories. they can be funny and they can be tragic. i love how it makes me feel. whenever i think life is too platonic and robotic, i listen to it and i feel human. i love how no matter how many times i listen to the Hawaiian bird one, or Auld Lang Syne one, i cannot hold my tears. i love how he makes fun of himself, calling himself cynical and jaded while being the most respectable man i have ever listened to. i strongly recommend it.

Beautiful video, however John is confused about Lascaux. There isn’t a single hand painted in the Lascaux cave. Only animals, geometrical shapes and one drawing of a man. Everything in the video is accurate, except for this which is repeated over and over. There are several other caves in France and Europe with hand paintings though, just not in Lascaux.
