Consciousness is perhaps the biggest riddle in nature. In the first part of this three part video series, we explore the origins of consciousness and take a closer look on how unaware things became aware.

It's amazing that humans are conscious enough to question everything, even consciousness itself.

I often think about how in hundreds of years from now, digital archeologists will be combing through these videos and marvel at how we could possibly have got by in our lives knowing so little about how we got to where we currently are.

This honestly makes programming a creature game way easier.

The fact that our brain processes information as small as atoms and compounds them into a full visual is absolutely mind blowing.

I was always slightly bothered when people refer to "consciousness" as something that a thing either has or does not have. I don't think its as black-and-white as that, I think some creatures have more or less consciousness than others, and even go through phases of being more or less conscious throughout their lifespan (like sleeping, or being distracted, or making decisions)

The only time I've felt like I truly understood consciousness was the few times I've experienced what a psychosis felt like. I remember just being blown away and in a state of awe and appreciation, knowing that I wouldn't understand what I was feeling once I snapped out of it

A good definition of consciousness I once read in a text on yoga psychology is that consciousness is awareness of awareness and this always sat well with me.

I love this video. The things we take for granted, like consciousness, took years and years of evolution and experimentation by previous organisms for us to be able to be at the peak of our conscious ability.

Thank you for being "conscious" that these animations including the behavior and graphics of them, the narrators tone of voice, the speed in which he talks and other things are all what makes the video more enjoyable, comprehensible, and psychologically soothing. Thank you for the content 🙂

After watching this video I'm fully convinced that consciousness is not as complex as we think which is probably why we can't figure it out. It seems to me that consciousness is a combination of things such as chemical impluses and physical evolution. To explain further all of our senses boil back down to chemical reactions triggering electrical impulses that our brains process and interpret it. Our DNA along with our microbiom and our senses probably make up a good chunk if not all of our consciousness.

"Consciousness has not been explained until one can provide a comprehensive picture of how the mind not only “fits” the world, but also “intends” and “constitutes” it as an intelligible phenomenon. And that is not the straightforward mechanical problem it is often mistaken for." David Bentley Hart. His next book is on mind, looking forward to that.

We have become so conscious that we are questioning consciousness itself, wow

I think consciousness is like a spotter plane flying over a combat zone to assess the effectiveness of combat actions. I believe it informs our memories and our dreams (which may modify the memories) and is thereby a survival trait.

I honestly believe our consciousness and evolution to begin with came from the sensation of pleasure. Its arguably the first sensation felt by anything we can classify as living.

I love how this states the ability of other species to think in complex ways, while recognizing that we have a peculiar change that differentiates human’s form of consciousness

I like the approach of building up from simpler forms of consciousness to more complex ones. There's an element of sensory integration worth perhaps touching on more, in that input from vision, smell, taste, touch, etc. need to be bundled together by the brain and integrated into a higher level sense of what's going on within and around you (this function being grounded in human neuroanatomy, in particular). But that's a minor detail. Overall a really excellent video and approach.

Dear Kurzgesagt: every video you share 10 minutes of inspiration and innovation, which reaches an average of 5 million people. This means that you share 50 million minutes of life changing content, or 95 years, every video. Think what good these 95 years per video will contribute to the community pool of life. Just one video could possibly have as much or more impact as someone's entire life, birth to death. This channel is a gift, thank you guys.
