And to imply that none of Eddie 's solos had melody, or that he was unaware of, and never used, acoustic guitars, is just stupid.

( Either way, I had to work or go to college) Lol, there was no way I was going to be allowed to live at home & not work, like my kids! I took a year off, and got a job, it sucked! Then I was actually going to join the military. I took the ASVAB test & all. Then my Mom got me a job with Suffolk County in NY. So I worked as a civil servant for 24 years, with no complaints. I think my Mom pulled a fast one because if you recall Desert Storm was just getting heated up & I don’t think she wanted her only boy going off to war. I have 3 AWESOME sisters but no brothers. So yeah, I was a Momma's boy! But, I wouldn’t trade one of my sisters for a brother! And as that stupid song goes: “That’s my story & I’m stickin’ to it!” Lol... Peace

However, people with perfect pitch (If never personal with perfect pitch) I have played with people good relative pitch and others that have better relative pitch & I’m pretty good. I don’t know… someone like Randy Roads for example. (Who I know was classically trained. By who or for how long I do not know) he was only 25 when he died. I mean at 25? He wasn’t close to hitting his ceiling. I only picked Randy Roads be he was the 4 person other than Eddie V, Nuno & Rob Thomas. Though Randy’s guitar playing was effin awesome. I couldn’t pick up a bass guitar & play it (other than a 1-2 licks that some showed me on guitar) I didn’t know how to make music until teacher came over the house once a week. I’m not an Eddie that figured out on his own (extremely fast) own what frets to hit & figured out tapping. I’m not arguing you & I agree that 99.9 of us need to practice. (practice is everything) Other 1% maybe not as much so?

I don’t think we can talk about Extreme without mentioning their criminality underrated 3rd album “III Sides To Every Story”. That thing is a masterpiece. It’s one of the best albums of the 90s and hardly anyone has heard it.

I've always wished Rick would talk about III Sides, as not only is it one of the greatest records of all time, it's one of the greatest concept records of all time, and the variety and originality of the songs is astounding. It is for sure in my top 10 desert island records.

@Roger Masa Paul was more of a basic drummer and I'd say the weakest link in the chain for sure. It would be interesting to hear all that old stuff with a more stylized drummer.

Nuno and EVH have been my two favorite musicians for decades. Glad to see Nuno getting his due.

Omg I can’t wait for a Nuno interview. I’m 41, I grew up in the early 90s listening to extreme (in fact they were the first rock band I remember being really into) and always loved that there was a Portuguese-American dude in the band (I’m Brazilian). He’s the rare case of a virtuoso who somehow comes off shy and integrates his solos in songs in such a way that the song just wouldn’t work without them. I’m a very basic guitarist, but always been amazed at how someone can be technically so advanced and still come off with so much groove and soul.

One of the greats in the heavy rock genre, he’s brilliant.

Rick! Everyone is talking about Nuno's solo. Myself included. It's awesome. But I realized that nobody is talking about Gary's vocals. Gary Cherone is 61 years old and kills it. He's just incredible.

61 isn't very old though. Most singers who take care of their voice will sing really well at that age. Come back when he's 91.

But it's a terrible vocal production. Tuned and compressed to death. That guy sounds a lot better than what we get with this record.

@Ash Staunton Nope. I don't think so. Scott Weiland AT BEST was a local hero who got lucky. Gary is a force of nature. That guy, from his rooter to his tooter, is one of the best vocalists to ever roam the planet. And I don't even like singers. They are there just to fill up the space between guitar solos.

Let's not forget how badass this drummer is too and the drum sound. He did some awesome drumming on the Dramagods album with Nuno. Sad that Mangini didn't pan out, but I love this drummer's style and he's a good fit with Extreme.

@Tommy Estes When I played Rise for a couple of friends, I told them it sounded like a STP song, and started Singing the words to "Silvergun Superman" over Gary, and it fit perfectly. My buddies were kinda blown away.

First Eddie, then Randy, then NUNO. I've always known from day one how KILLER he is. My favorite solo of his is actually the rhythm solo he does during "Cupid's Dead." That is one KILLER chord solo.

I love the fact they literally feature this solo in the track. It's not just a guitar solo, but they're saying "listen to this freaking guitar solo!" It's all right in your face with no apologies. He also plays drums and I think that contributes to his impeccable rhythm. And then the voice. Such a beast!!

Nuno's rhythm playing has always blown me away. This song has it all. I for one am about to hit the rewind button on the Extreme recordings to absorb Nuno's body of work.

You can study all the notes and practice, but what gets really difficult is how those notes fit in time. Nuno like Eddy has a unique, inimitable, crazy feeling. And he feels it in everything he does. Never mind the amount of notes, it's how and where he puts them that makes the difference.... Welcome back Nuno.

He's a great soloist entirely because he's an awesome rhythm player IMO - he's got an innate killer groove, same as EVH.

Just like Eddie, Nuno distinguishes himself because what he plays is MUSICAL, not just dazzling. Many have done the latter without the former. He's great.

I was never a big Extreme fan but i could never deny Nuno's guitar genius.

His solo in "Play With Me" is my favorite of all time. It defined the action chase scene through the mall in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

@Technical Difficulties well - you are entitled to an opinion.... :-) Three Sides was an still is fantastic - an under rated masterpiece of an album. Great to see the love for it in a lot of comments here. He is not the next Eddie, indeed, and have never tried to be. Never needed to be as he has his own voice. This solo, if anything, does sound like a bit of an Eddie tribute. And as for shoe horning his way into Ricks channel - did you actually listen to what Rick said, and also how much Rick genuinely obviously already appreciated Nuno's work?

All of us who have been playing for a long time know Nuno as one of the GOATs. Complete and total skill AND vocabulary. I remember being 14 years old and hearing Rest In Peace for the first time. Dude melted my little face off.

I dn't know why but everytime i hear Nuno play i am reminded of Vitto Bratta(who in my opinion is one of the most underrated guitarist ever. That guy was a genius beyond words could describe. Sad he never got his due that he deserved )

i cant help but think this solo is a tribute to EV. Nuno is so accomplised at playing his own style surely the only reason to play those eddy type riffs must be a tribute. Brilliant all the same.

@Andreas Lechner-Riedl You're right. Among these shredders, Nuno has the best songwriting skills. Well, or maybe, Paul is in the similar level with Nuno. However, to be fair, I think Randy has been more influential to the rock music compared to Nuno, Paul, or Yngwie.

Nuno was so damn good at Generation Axe a few years ago. A welcome respite of melody and phrasing along with sick chops among all of the over the top craziness from some of the other players.

I’ve always held nuno up there with the very best in the world. Never understood why he wasn’t considered up there with Vai, Satriani etc when he’s clearly able to do all that and more. And write some seriously funky tunes.

They just created their best song this late in their career! killer song. Let's also mention the singing and back ground singing, name me another singer from that era that can still sing like he did in the 80's, bravo Cherrone!

There are aspects of this solo, found in Chris Oliva's solo, in "Edge of Thorns". A vastly underrated guitarist.

You should do a whole episode on the “Three Sides” record. That is a masterpiece!! So little known. That’s one of my favorite records of all time. The production and creativity that went to that record is incredible. Not for the average person. It’s really mostly musicians who appreciate how incredible that record is.

The '90s were so amazing and we just took it for granted, I remember seeing Extreme playing Get The Funk Out on Top of the Pops (UK pop show) and at the time they were just one of a number of great rock bands in the charts, the song did OK and we didn't hear much from them again. I haven't thought about them much since then but hearing that song again now, it sounds so good and just imagine rock of that talent and caliber being an everyday thing in pop music now, it's seems impossible. I'm glad to be old enough to remember those days! Now i'm a lot older and I am digging into all kinds of obscure vintage rock and I need to check out Extreme more!

We’ve been hearing about Nuno after Extreme’s pass through the 90’s like in stories about myths and legends. Not many people payed real attention to how great he actually was and is. @daleturner A couple more from the first 3 Blues Saraceno instrumental records : Before the Storm, A lighter Shade of Plaid, Stinky Kitty, Feeding the Box. Hundreds of songs exist with that delay trick. Nuno does it very well. Lesson one would be "Cathedral"- EVH, that's the easiest one.

Nice. Nuno is really awesome. He's a scary shredder. But when he talks about his influences, idols and such and he mentions a lot. He gets really passionate. He becomes this kid and really excited. I think that's why he plays what he want, without being limited to any genre.

Nuno has always been the man IMO, and it's great to hear new material from Extreme. Of course he's gonna melt your face with the solo, but the first part of the solo is a total tribute to EVH with the trem picking + dive bombs on the whammy bar! I think Waiting For The Punchline kind of got looked over in 1995, but has some of Nunos best stuff! Can't wait to hear the rest of the new album!

To be fair, he established himself as someone that shouldn't be underestimated on the first album with the 'Play With Me'' solo.

I loved their 3 albums I bought, but the first album will always be my favorite. and Play With Me will always be the pinnacle of the album. And Play With Me is the first song I play for anyone who tell me that they only ever heard "More Than Words".

That scene in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure in the mall where this song is playing was absolutely epic.

@erissrocI grew up in the Boston, MA area and was in college then. I remember hearing “Mutha don’t wanna go to school today” on WHJY in Providence RI, before the album was released. All of the Nuno “tricks” are on that album, even then. Van Halen was a huge influence on their sound. Like Aerosmith before them, anyone in a band had someone who knew someone who knew someone in the band. Glad to see they’re back with a vengeance!

That is beyond heavy. I grew up in southern California in the 70s when Van Halen was a garage band before I went to college and heard them on the radio for the first time. I couldn't believe it. I hated Van Halen because I was a guitar player and he was so insanely great. Then when Nuno came along, I thought here is someone who is right up there. It's crazy they're still around playing this kind of music. Love it.

Been a huge fan of Nuno since Extreme's 1st album. He's been one of my all-time favorite rock/fusion guitar player/songwriter. He's amazing live as he is in the studio. His rhythm and spunk in his playing is 2nd to none. I'm so glad he is finally getting some long time coming attention and recognition. He's due for a ton of it. Extreme's songs have always been a little hit or miss for me. But from the first time I heard Nuno play, you knew he had a ton of chops. Back when they broke, all the guitar magazines had tabs of his stuff and it was just confirmed that he had monster chops. This song is one that definitely hits for me.

III Sides To Every Story is easily in my top ten albums of all time. Nuno's got licks inside of riffs inside of licks. He's been my favorite guitarist since I discovered Extreme.

After Eddie's passing we need this. Nuno is completely underrated in my opinion. We need a guy like him still. I hope to see Extreme when they come to Philly.

​@Eric In SF Hah! I thought I WAS the only grumpy older guy on here!!! Unfortunately we have too many younger/less familiar peeps online making declarations instead of observations. At least this post includes the disclaimer "in my opinion". Truthfully, "it's my observation" would be more accurate, alas too many uninformed opinions are flooding comments sections everywhere. But I DO agree with the sentiment - it IS GREAT that Nuno is AGAIN getting attention so that new audiences can enjoy and learn from him. For the rest of us, whether you were/ are Extreme fans, or Rhiana fans (he's been her Musical Director and guitarist for like 15yrs now - caught a glimpse at the superbowl), or just from the LA or Boston areas - we've always included Nuno in the convo of GOAT gtr players. 🤘🏻 He's one of my faves because of his POCKET, FEEL and CHOICES. Also, he's a solid drummer. Played drums on the early recordings and can be seen playing Hot For Teacher on drums live with Steel Panther on YT. The guy is wicked talented brah!! 😅

I truly believe I love Nuno and Bach for the same reason. His ability to link phrases back to themselves.

Something else as well… totally unpretentious. Mainlining from the soul… Nuno is the “Bach on overdrive” of rock.

In Nuno's announcement of the release of the song he credits Eddie, and if you look closely on their video you'll see he's got strips of tape around the tip of his upper guitar body in black, red, and white. What a cool touch.

Hey Rick, he did a very similar pattern in the solo for “Peacemaker Die” on Three Sides to a Story. It’s pretty epic.

Nuno is definitely a master at rock guitar composition!

I’m so happy the world has finally noticed my favorite band. Their third album “III Sides To Every Story” is a fricken underrated masterpiece. "Waiting For the Punchline" and "Saudades De Rock" are also under the radar albums!

@tmmsplace You have no clue who my friends are and what our music scene is about. Butt Rock/Hair Metal absolutely sucks. There's so much talent in this world. Gizz from the English Dogs/Janus Stark could play anything this dude can play and he's a Punk Rocker. Gary Holt from Exodus and Slayer absolutely destroys Nuno. Quick swinging from his nuts. There's thousands out there as good as him. Extreme doesn't have one good song. He's talented but, wake up. There's thousands of Death Metal guitarist that destroy this dude without the gay vocals.

They always said doing More Than Words made enough money so they could do III Sides, an album they really wanted.

@No Job Buddy That's because SoCal doesn't know from Boston. My band was playing songs from Aerosmith's 'toys In The Attic" in 1975 and landed in SoCal, but nobody knew any of those songs. About a year later "Dream On" became a hit. SoCal is in its own private "I dunno".

True,"Three Sides to Every Story" is my home theater demo. When i give new people a Test Drive on my home theater system this is a demo! The intros are all spot on. A fan since Porno, :) Even have a dramagods dvd in Korea.

they played the Freddie mercury tribute concert and stole the show from the greatest bands of the time. having written literally one of the most famous love songs ever. not really unnoticed. They were ignored by macho rockers and metal heads though because they could sing love songs and snobbish gen x ers who thought a band who could play were automatically arseholes

Been listening Extreme the band before ever knowing that Nuno was behind those killer riffs and blazing solos. Gone were my teen ages... As you said Rick, Nuno is one of the best guitarists. Period. With this record he proved to us all that he still keeps up the flag, no compromises.

I will forever love his solo on "Play With Me". When I saw Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure back in the day.

5:05 - This "dive bomb" is something Jerry Cantrell did a LOT on Facelift and Dirt. His licks and solo ends always somehow dive and connect with Layne's vocals.
