The nightmare videos of childrens' YouTube - and what's wrong with the internet today | James Bridle

  • Am Vor 4 years

    TEDTED

Writer and artist James Bridle uncovers a dark, strange corner of the internet, where unknown people or groups on DE-film hack the brains of young children in return for advertising revenue. From "surprise egg" reveals and the "Finger Family Song" to algorithmically created mashups of familiar cartoon characters in violent situations, these videos exploit and terrify young minds -- and they tell us something about where our increasingly data-driven world is headed. "We need to stop thinking about technology as a solution to all of our problems, but think of it as a guide to what those problems actually are, so we can start thinking about them properly and start to address them," Bridle says.

I showed this to my mom because she let my sibbling watch yt kids and I already had concerned about it for a long time, but she thought I was just being stupid amd overreacting. She first said it was nonsense and that I was exaggerating again, but my little sibbling (age 4) was watching as well. And when my sibbling recognized the clips shown, my mother started to listen to it. And when my little sibbling started to recognize the goofed up clips at the end, my mom decided to delete youtube kids and only let my sibbling watch real child shows like the ones on TV and Netflix. This video saved my little sibbling's sanity and innocence. Let's thank this guy.

Beware anything marketed toward children including Netflix etc. People do NOT care about children, they care about making money, period. I was alarmed by the show Cry Babies on Netflix which I was watching with my 5 year old once and had to forbid her from watching it again because these BABIES have am actual SEANCE. Like seriously calling up dead spirits and everything and this is marketed toward babies?! Be wise parents!

In my household we have a “No Youtube..period” rule. At first we thought it was harmless - after all we were very strict to make sure our child was watching kid appropriate content. Before long our 4yr old became interested in watching “open toys” and “family play”videos. An almost immediate change in behavior took place. He stopped wanting to actually have real family play time & anytime the Screen Time limit was up, he would throw the most uncharacteristic, emotional bloody-murder-tantrum I have ever witnessed. It would last well into the rest of the day. Needless to say, it was eye opening enough that we dramatically changed our Screen Time rules. YouTube is OUT! In fact no more 3min instant gratification vids anywhere (prime has them too). We lean toward learning vids like Leap Frog Reading, a limited time period of his favorite cartoon, shows that teach character (like Owlegories or Veggietales) or we’ll splurge on a full length, parent-pre-screened family movie. Bottom line, every parent should watch this Ted talk and take it seriously. I think there’s something to the dopamine release kids get w/these sorts of vids. I’m not so sure screen time is so good for us either - we’re even considering getting rid of the TV altogether. Save yourself a lot of headaches, turn off the TV, pick up a book and start your kids on a path to a love for reading.

People don't let their children play in the street anymore because they are afraid they could get hurt. Stranger danger we've been told. It drives me nuts because the same parents are happy as long as their kids are inside on a computer. Give your kid access to the Internet and you are literally giving every pervert and freak show access to your child. Not to mention what constant access and not playing outside does to them physically, emotionally and intellectually.

Sadly I was a victim of this I remember I was watching Dora. Everything was fine at first but then it turned into gore and bloody scenes. I remember Dora was killing boots and her family and eating them. I screamed and cried. Then my dad scolded me for watching that video. I was literally a toddler I didn't know anything. I never saw that video again. Then my dad got YouTube kids. It wasn't better. Those videos were still there and I got more and more terrified. I am a teen now and I still have those traumatic videos stuck in my head. Please parents don't give your child a ipad at such a young age like my parents did to me. You can't control what your child watched because it comes out of nowhere. Whoever did these videos are monsters and terrible people for playing around with childrens feelings like that. I recommend giving your child their iPad at a older age so they know what they are doing. If your child wants to see cartoons. You can always get the nick Jr app or put it on tv, but please don't give devices to your child at a young age.

@Erika Stone Truth!!! I had found a station on my cable network called "Baby First", and my son LOVES IT ❤️ He learned so much from it, and it broadcast all day and night. They even have activities and toys based on the characters, so me and his God Mother brought him a few, and he's learning songs and sayings (he learned "night night! Sleep tight! From one, and he says it to me and his granny when we're going to bed ❤️ so sweet) and they are VERY educational and safe! I also introduced him to PBS Kids, I personally grew up on PBS as a child and so did my nieces when they came along, and he loves that, too......that's all he'll watch/I allow him to view, and ONLY on television, not on my phone or my tablet.

YouTube isn't just on iPads. It's on your smartphones and tablets and computer. The best advice I could give is make sure the videos your children are watching are safe. Ideally stay away from the React channel, Bright side, happy tree friends, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, PewDiePie, Robot Chicken, YTP, ect. Also watch your children when they're using their devices. Show your kids PBS kids. Keep violent video games out of the house until they're are 17 years or older.

This is exactly why I refuse to raise my future children to be "tablet kids". It's so easy to just put a phone or tablet in front of a kid and have it loop videos for hours instead of actually parenting your child. Also, unpopular opinion that's kinda off subject. But I hate the fact the FNAF (Five Nights At Freddy's) is being marketed towards children even though it's a horror game. There's literally FNAF books in the children's book section at the store I work at. I don't mean to sound like a boomer, but I don't believe children should be consuming any type of horror.

I’m 17 and grew up in a place where my family was among the first people in the middle east to have an ipad, and I was about 5 when that happened. I am beyond grateful I grew up at a time when animation was not as easy to make so we had to consume media made by real qualified animators and cartoon makers. Now that I’m a little older, I’ve noticed my younger sister and younger cousins (who all had ipads since the day they exited the womb) all have this addiction to their phones and talk about adult subjects which even I still hesitate to talk about to this day. It’s truly a scary world out there and I’m glad we have people like James and other people in this comments section who are noticing this odd behavior in children that are a result of videos like these. I’ve already decided that my future kids will not have an ipad until they are old enough to think logically before making decisions and I hope everyone else does this too. Thank you for this talk James.

That is eye opening and frightening because what children see and hear before the age of 8 molds their unconscious belief systems, attitudes, and feelings about their environments and themselves. It takes a lifetime , sometimes, to unlearn and undo the damage. Parents have waaaaay tooooooo much power and control in this world. Parents are creating the children's and society's future.

This is a very important topic and I’m glad this speaker is starting this discussion. To all those sharing your stories, whether from the perspective of the parent or the child, I’d like to mention something. There has been a huge gap in understanding and connection between generations ever since technology really began developing. Even if parents are only trying to protect their kids, this may only lead to a continued lack of communication and honesty between a parent and a child. The child may begin to feel misunderstood, frustrated, and unheard by the parent when they begin to impose rules; I would know, as I experienced this myself. It’s only now that I’m older I can appreciate the censorship my parents put on my internet access. Please, if you are restricting your child’s internet access, don’t explain your reasoning with “because I said so” or “technology rots your brain”. All that will do is further frustrate your child and make it hard for them to see your good intentions. The last thing you want to do is become their enemy, because then all theyre going to do is try to find a way to outsmart or work around you. They will get good at lying and hiding, and will lose trust with you. Please, be honest with your kids, if they’ll listen. You’d be surprised what they’re willing to hear.

I made a promise to myself a long time ago, when I was a teenager, that if I ever had children, I would curate any media content they could see. Of course, you cannot control what they see on the Internet; however, you can control what they watch on television or DVD, and through that, hopefully, you can teach them to use other media in a mindful and responsible way. I don’t have children yet, but if I ever have them, I will make sure that they watch wholesome cartoons, such as old Disney series and Hungarian Folk Tales. I don’t care that those are old stuff, at least they were really made with children in mind. Those animated cartoons treat children like children. They are not stupid, they are smart, but they are also kind, and mostly teach children about friendship. Oh, I’m so very glad that I was a teenager when the Internet became widely available, and finally, we installed it in our home.

There was a very short period of time where I remember seeing something on YT that was really… wrong. I’ve since learned how to avoid that, but as for my much younger cousins today… well, at least it hasn’t bled horribly onto their personality, but the stuff they watch is at best, low effort and at worst, endlessly repetitive. It’s a matter of time before it gets worse. Seriously, moderate your children’s online time. You should only stop MAYBE at the age of 10, but even that is pretty thin ice. 11-13 is plenty more reasonable, and by 14 years old they should hopefully be aware enough not to fall for these and watch what they feel is actually comfortable or safe. If they’re 9 or less, moderate, and if you see anything suspicious, stop it and explain. I’m no parent, but if I were, I’d absolutely do this.

@☔︎𝚁𝚊𝚒𝚗☔︎ Tikkabilla was essentially just a modern "Play School", and the dragon character was a replacement for the old cuddly toys they used to have. Oh yes, Storymakers with Danny John Jules, that was a classic show from my childhood. In my opinion, High School Musical grabbed kids attention for all the wrong reasons. Too much conflicts, lifeless teenage acting that makes 80s teen actors look like solid gold, and a bit too deep of a story that children wouldn't relate to until they themselves are 15 or 16.

@☔︎𝚁𝚊𝚒𝚗☔︎ I didn't grow up in the 1970s either, so I wasn't "Play School" material. But it has been resurrected quite a bit, like another CBEEBIES programme, "Tikkabilla", having the same windows and the same clock as "Play School" once had. But CBEEBIES shows back then were still better than half of the nonsense we had in the 2000s. I'm not a fan of stuff like "High School Musical" or "Hannah Montana", as I think those are just flat and lifeless. But I would rather watch "High School Musical" on a loop for hours on end than watch any modern children's programing or movies. At least there I'd still be a little sane.

As someone who grew up on the internet, please monitor your kid's content! I never really got this level of content, but through my preteen/ early teens I've seen a lot that people that age shouldn't. Monitoring can be as simple as creating conversations about the content they consume and being involved. I see too many parents using technology and the internet as a co-parent.

@Gi_go_83 I hear you and I sometimes see examples of your experience in the shops. However, I am a single parent of a now 3 year old. There are no screaming tantrums when we go shopping nor have there been any in the past. She enjoys helping with the shopping and chatting...and chatting. Yes, I am tired and work full-time. No, there is no screen time in our home. It can be done but you need to lead the way with a clear vision of what you want your family life to look like and then work backwards to what steps and behaviours you need to adopt to get there. You can try joining Present Play for a year if you need help and a support group but it only opens in the spring. In the meantime, get a menstrual cup and save your sanity NEVER needing to make emergency tampon runs again! Never! Life. Changing.

You’ve obviously never tried shopping with a screaming child who wants to get out of the cart and literally tear the store apart. That’s what toddlers do. If you don’t have kids, you can’t understand that you cannot be a Superparent 24/7/365. Until you are one, you really can’t judge. Parents are exhausted. Don’t shame a poor mom at Walmart, you have no idea what she’s going through or how her day went, or how incredibly stressful it is to keep a child entertained at all times. At a store especially, sometimes to just run in and get milk and tampons you gotta let the kid who maybe refused to nap that day and is cranky watch a cartoon. Give parents a break. You can’t make a moral assessment of this or any other parent by seeing this very brief look into their day. You also know nothing about the child.

Overall, I agree with the general point. Although, i do disagree with what has been said about algorithms and machine learning. The people who developed it knew what they were doing. They built an algorithm that makes them money, and unless we decline their views and ad revenue, they don't care to change it. Anyone who works with machine learning on a pro level knows how it works, it's not some alien tech. Glad someone decided to talk about what youtube is doing though, even if he didn't hit the nail on the head with every point.

Starting out as a new parent I used YouTube for my oldest (now 3 years). To get a brake and having it in the background. At first he looked at it sporadically, but after a while that was all he wanted to, and I felt it was hampering his development and he got sucked into the TV or pad. So I quit YouTube. I still have a TV or music on the background, but at most it's science shows or kids news program and such produced by Swedish TV. But mostly now a days I play music and instead of putting on the TV, I go out after kindergarten and play with them for 2-3 hours make a foodbox and eat with them outside until it's time to go to sleep. The older one has really started to develop nicely, and is more social and plays better with kids. The smaller one (2 years) didn't get addicted to begin with. It's awesome, we get to have adventures every day, and nobody misses the TV anymore and I have more energy (from 0 to 10%) by breathing fresh air and not being stuck inside with two toddlers where they obviously shouldn't be.

My parents didn't allow me to have a smartphone when I was young. At the time I was somewhat irritated about it, though I really enjoyed reading at home. Ever since I became an adult, I've been insanely grateful about how supportive they were and the boundaries they set. I really don't care that I was made fun of for it. The effect of things like this on me would have been so much worse. I always did well in school and I remember a kid once saying "Imagine how clever [I] would have been with the internet". It didn't take me long to realise that it wouldn't have made me cleverer at all at that age.

Youtube didn't exist when I was in elementary school, and even with the most limited video-sharing websites, I somehow found my way into creepy videos which weren't meant for kids. I'd say the issue that kids go through today still existed in some form in the early 2000s, but without a doubt it only got worse with Youtube's multiple changes over the years. My 7 years old nephew in one of his visits just casually opened a recommended video on youtube in our living room's TV. My mind just shattered over the thought that it actually happens and no one really said anything against it. When I was his age, I was limited to TV time even in other places since I was expected to take a part in the conversation, mostly in family gatherings. Even then, it would be weird to watch late-evening anime at someone else's house as I had some sense of shame in me. I'll make sure that once I'll become a father myself, I'll give my child the proper education he deserves, even if it means being hated by him until a certain point in his life.

I work with kids. we used to let them watch a video or have YouTube kids open for up to 5 minutes as a reward up to 4 times a day. (The kids are there for 6hrs, aged 3 and older) We had to stop because certain kids would freak out when the timer was up, or they would hurry and change videos before the first one fully finished, trying to “trick us” into letting them watch more. No matter how many time warnings and all that they got, it often ended in a child being upset. We no longer use YouTube as a reward. They can choose a song to listen to, but no looking at the screen besides (maybe) to pick the song.

There’s also a thing called parental controls, and either preventing or avoiding the internet for your kids, is inevitable. They’ll be introduced from other kids in day care/school. Another thing to note is if your kid is curious and asks genuine questions there’s a way to navigate and explain to them in a way they understand it. Kids are more perceptive than you think.

I read a LOT of comments on this video and I'm surprised no one quoted this: "I don't know what's worse, that we built a system that seems to be entirely optimized for the absolute worst aspects of human behavior, or that we seem to have done it by accident without even realizing we were doing it." This is what the internet has become. The centralization of all human thought which is inherently evil. What else points more blatantly to the fallen nature of sinful man?

@Chelsea Barker Where I agree with you that the heart of men is evil and that's why we reject Life, Truth, and Love (which are equivocations for God). Where I add nuance is in that these algorithms are heartless or mindless. In reality they represent the heart of their designers. And I think that this is part of your main point. But also consider that Disney MUST actively go after copyright infringements or else they lose proper title and claim to their copyright. People have often complained that Disney is sue happy, but that's a legal decision not a moral one. They HAVE TO sue or else they cannot sue anyone anymore because their copyright becomes null and void. Also consider that YouTube, which is owned by Google, happily stamps down thousands of content creators. They have censored for covid, among other topics. Neither Disney nor YouTube has shown any effort against Elsa and Mickey cutting each other open inside the YouTube kids section. This shows malice, not mistake.

James is my new hero. This was a brilliant speech about a topic I have been addressing for years among other parents. When the screen becomes the babysitter, the parent, the educator, the guide to life and behaviour, wouldn't you want that to be monitored by you instead of leaving it into the hands of strangers? Most parents ar thrilled to leave their kids in front of a screen all day, as it keeps them "calm". I am instead terrified, knowing what it does to small developing brains and within ten years I predict we will see all the negative aspects of this coming with full force from a generation that was abandoned in a sea of strangers and with no understanding that they needed to fight to get out, or given the tools to do so.

From what I can tell, it was meant to go after things like this, but the side effect was that genuine creations that weren't even remotely intended for children would be targeted as well. It's a difficult game. One thing we can take away from this though is to get rid of or automatically disable that godforsaken autoplay button. When I had my youngest child in a very traumatic birth which left her with brain injuries, I didn't have the quality time to spend with my then three year old. She was watching all of these repetitive Korean cartoons and she began displaying autistic type behaviours. Lack of eye contact, resisting leaving the house saying she wanted to 'stay at home and watch pororo forever'. She would wake in the night crying for this cartoon. She would ask for it the second she woke up. She wasn't eating her food because of it, dark under the eyes and withdrawn. In the end we just had to break her heart and go cold turkey. It took two weeks to get our little girl back and now she understands that these cartoons make her poorly and if they pop up she will ask me to turn them over. These cartoons and repetitive playing videos are absolute poison for children. It's like crack for children and I say that as a recovered addict. It is that serious. Thankfully she has never come across any of these dark, graphic ones.

This is precisely why I’m glad the most technologically I was exposed to when I was young were movies and tv shows that my parents looked at before me and my siblings watched it.
