Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell
Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

We created our first app ‘Universe in a Nutshell’, together with Tim Urban of Wait but Why! You can get it here: Appstore: http://kgs.link/universe-app-ios Google Playstore: http://kgs.link/universe-app-android Oh boy. Making an app is hard. It seemed so easy when we started. We underestimated the necessary work load and all the potential problems tenfold – this is not a figure of speech, this took ten times longer than we thought it would. And we are sort of used to working on big projects. So the first update to the app should hopefully be here in the next 24 hours (we are waiting for approval of the update in the app stores) – it will fix a bunch of small things that slipped through. We’ll constantly improve this thing because while it was honestly a horrible nightmare to make, it also was fun and we want to get better at it and make more things in the future. In case you don’t know Wait but Why btw, it is the best and most fun blog on the internet (https://waitbutwhy.com/2020/09/universe.html) and if you don’t know it you should change that like right now. Tim and I collaborated for the first time in 2013 and we have been good friends ever since. And this thing was something we started talking about years ago. So what is this thing we made and why? You can seamlessly travel from the smallest things in existence, past the coronavirus, human cells and dinosaurs all the way to the largest stars and galaxies and marvel at the whole observable universe. You can learn more about each object or simply enjoy the sheer scale of it all. It’s a fun plaything. The app is inspired by the “scale of the universe” website by the Huang Twins that Tim and I spent a lot of time with when it came out years ago – and felt that it was finally time to create a Wait but Why and Kurzgesagt version. There are no in-app purchases and no ads. All future updates are included! Since this is our first app we would love to hear your feedback so we can improve it over time. Leave us a five star review if you want to support it. Kurzgesagt and all the projects we do are mostly funded by viewers like you. So if you like the app we’ll make more digital things in future! Ok! Thank you for reading – Philipp

Fun fact about Red Dwarves: they aren't actually red. In science, particularly in astronomy, 'red' is often a relative term. Light that is redder is lower on the electromagnetic spectrum, and light that is bluer is higher. This means that blue light is redder than x-rays, and red light is bluer than radio. Red Dwarves are redder than your typical star, but like all stars they're still blue enough to give off gamma. If you saw one with your own eyes, it would likely look no different to any other star as far as colour goes. There are even actual pictures of Red Dwarves, and sure enough they're white.

@the madcow yeah... Seems to me like an odd comment for a fan to make though... It may be an unfamiliar idiom but to put something "in a nutshell" means something along the lines of expressing information in the simplest way possible. It's kind of in the name. They also repeatedly and explicitly state that what they're presenting is a simplified form when it comes to complex concepts and even suggest sources where an interested viewer can delve deeper. I don't know for certain but I suspect the whole point is to make big ideas accessible and entertaining to anyone who is interested.

3:20 You forgot to mention that the star lifetime reduction is not just due to the temperature at which it burns (that would fail to explain how 100 trillion gets reduced to less than 10 billion). The red dwarfs are "fully convective" meaning their cores (where the fusion happens) exchange the hydrogen with the outer layers, allowing them to burn all of (or most of) their hydrogen. At a certain mass however the gravity force separates the core from the outer layer, preventing the star from burning all of its hydrogen. The proportion between the size of the core and the size of the star goes down as the mass goes up.

Can I just say I really love how stars are rendered in this art style? They're so beautifully animated, using a combination of different shades of color and lots of bubbling, amorphous shapes on their surfaces that give them the feel of molten metal, or a more liquid form of fire. It's not "realistic" but it really drives home the idea of these stars being massive spheres of super-hot plasma powered by ongoing fusion reactions.

Other informative channels a) do less research b) take stock images as background c) play generic background music in the background (not that b and c are bad, not everyone has the fundings and creative power of those guys). But how much work is in each and every video they make! And an epic marvelous soundtrack that follows the pace of the picture. The end reminded me of Planet Earth II with the music by Hans Zimmer. Actually, gravity does make the core hotter and denser, however the radiation zone collapses into the core and fuses. That hydrogen layer makes the other layers expand outward the core. About 100 million K makes it fuse helium into carbon and oxygen. However, that won't expand the star, because the core expands again and lowers the pressure on the outer layers, so stars shrink.

I can wrap my mind around the sizes BUT what I cannot imagine is the temperature and luminosity. If we can’t even look at the sun directly and endure flames here the I don’t know how anything can withstand 500,000 brighter/hotter, except itself and black holes. So temperatures and luminosities are what blows my mind in the Astronomy even though it’s my favorite subject.

There is something poetic about the stars. Doesn't matter how much mass they accumulate in themselves, at the end, they are always going to give it back to the universe. They will never be able to keep everything by themselves.

The universe is biggest, greatest! In that, we have billions and billions of stars or suns. So several people are astonished in front of stars. But unfortunately ignore the fact that there is most powerful and wise somebody who created all these! Yes somebody who is able to count all the stars and even give a name to each of them.

Whatever was explained as being 10 trillion years old (dwarfs?) seemed to be reason to believe in more verses. I have thought there are multi-verses for a long time, so, if ours was created by others, maybe parts of them slid into ours in the making. I've always looked at that like human cells creating each other. Nova-nova

Red Dwarfs don't just last longer because they burn slower. They also have more fuel then bigger stars. As much as that doesn't make sense at first. A normal star like our sun can only use the hydrogen in the core for fusion. This is rue of all stars bigger then red dwarfs. Because of the was the mass separates it and the convection currents, all hydrogen not in the core can never get in to there to be used, and can never be fused by the star. And the larger a star is, the less of its hydrogen is in the core. So even though our star is more then 10x more massive then most red dwarfs, they have more fuel, because they can burn all the hydrogen in them. It all cycles down in to the core eventually, so they use it more slowly, and have as much or more to use as well.

My brain broke more than once in this video, only to be absolutely shattered by that last continuous size comparison zooming out from earth. "If you dropped Stephenson on the sun, it would fill Saturn's orbit" probably does more for one's sense of scale than any other sentence uttered by a man

The scale size is kind of wrong, you see even if the r136a1 star appeared to be small, you remember its size almost fits twice its size to fit in mercury orbit, and thus, with the scale of Stephenson2-18 the its size would fit in jupiter orbit instead of saturn orbit

Vor 4 Monate
kvd1
kvd1

And R136a1 is a example of a new type of star called a mass straggler star, And they can be created through collisions or even by becoming a vampire, And this star is probably shoving(or rather consuming) any star that wonders to close to this record breaker.
