Simple rules of geometry meant that 5-fold symmetry was impossible as were crystals without a periodic structure. This turns out to be wrong. Thanks to LastPass for sponsoring a portion of this video. Click here to start using LastPass: ve42.co/LPs

Huge thanks to Prof. Paul Steinhardt for the interview on this topic. Check out his book ‘The Second Kind of Impossible’

Bro, everything really cool and well done (you're great!), but the ADVERTISEMENTS are REALLY too many. It's extremely annoying to be stopped each 3-4 minutes. It makes you lose the will to watch other videos: it's a brainwashing.

Vor 3 Tage## Norton Newmann

Imagine the amount of time (lifetimes) spent trying to solve these problems without the aid of electronic computers. In printing/graphic arts, we now have stochastic "pseudorandom" (FM) screening which was impossible before computers. This completely eliminates the problem of needing to have perfect screen angles to prevent an objectionable moire pattern.

Vor 3 Tage## Brian Heins

Derek, How are you evaluating the potential remainder angles of the negative space when laying out the tiles on the floor? I mean, what's the thought process that has these pieces fit or not fit? How is your brain deciding based on putting a piece in place that it's the right one?

Vor 3 Tage## Tyler Ross

Then it's not a pattern

Vor 3 Tage## R. a. s. a. t. i.

i found one that only has 1 shape, a triangle with sides 1, 1, and sqrt(2), put all of them in square pairs, then make a perfect square pattern using these pairs and rotate just one of the pairs, since theres only one pair rotated the other way, it never repeats

Vor 4 Tage## cypher sabston

unfortunately the entire thing about infinite is the fact that it doesnt have an end meaning EVENTUALLY it will repeat fortunately its impossible to get an infinite amount of these tiles so this comment is null and void

Vor 7 Tage## DominoPivot

A few years ago I thought about making a video game where the player would explore a dungeon made of an infinite pattern of polygonal rooms. Each room would communicate with all the rooms surrounding it. Entering a room for the first time would permanently seal the room the player just left and would grant them a specific stat bonus based on the direction they took. The player's choices could therefore be represented as a path within the tiling, and upon death, the player could retry the exact same dungeon and get the same bonuses. As I started to wonder about the kinds of tilings that would produce interesting decision-making problems for the player, I realized that if I wanted to make the game interesting, I needed a way to generate an infinite pattern that never repeats, and that seemed difficult, if even possible. Turns out this is what I needed.

Vor 7 Tage## Halmaist

could the infinite pattern that never repeats have something to do with prime numbers ?

Vor 9 Tage## Alan Mendez

i don't understand why if the first penrose pattern is infinite it would not already have all other pattern within itself. What difference would another set of tiles have? perhaps a different origin, but does infinity even have an origin?

I think i saw two blue and green colour patters match at 11:04. At 11:04 you will see a green star almost in the middle of your screen. The 2 patters on its left and right side (Start patterns with blue centres and green spiky ends), they match! Guys aren't they identical? Please @veritasium or anyone else who knows, let me know if they are not identical then how?
