Thanks Summoning Salt I just finished the video and you take something that seems trivial such as Wii Sports speed runs and tell the story in such a way that at the end you actually felt the heartache and the impact of that last missed putt. The time for the miis to turn around and throw to first after the grabbing the ball changes depending on how far they have to stretch for the ball, so it's different every time. Miis stretching for the ball also changes the time for out to display on 1.0, so there is never a 'constant' time to compare against. There is also random lag that can occur in Bowling and Golf when striking / hitting rock walls and doing ds that is extremely prevalent in 1.1. To compensate, a few months ago a version variable was added to the board, meaning that players can filter runs to include just 1.1 runs, meaning there is a psuedo-seperate leaderboard. Also big fan of your vids champ keep em up

So I've rewatched this video a lot in four months. Probably 10+ times like all of the other summoningsalt videos. But it just now occured to me how much correct baseball terminology is in it. Like everything from an "Eephus pitch" to an immaculate inning, literally every opportunity to talk about baseball the terminology and references are on point! I played ball for most of my life, and either so has Summoning, or he put in a ton of effort into this video that is being glossed over. Really appreciate the extra details!

I wanted to chime in here and give kudos on the terminology as well, and mention that in real golf a similar rule exists as to what the community came up with. The ball must remain in the hole to be considered holed even if it's already hit the bottom of the cup on a bounce. Also, if the ball is trapped between the pin and the lip of the cup, it is not considered holed unless a portion of the ball is below the level of the green. Otherwise, you have to pull the pin to see if the ball will fall in or stay on the edge of the cup.

I've been working on a project that is completely time and energy consuming. I spend most days trapped in my den working on my craft. When i watch your videos it reminds me that there are people out there putting in the same amount of work towards their own passion. This gives me relief for some reason. I love your videos. Keep it up brother.

you're so great at conveying the drama of these virtual feats. Focusing on the 2nd place holder emphasizes an overlooked phenomena that fuels many of these records; competition. Nomad's persistent rivalry is likely what keeps the record holder on his toes and causes them to strive to improve. This is not unique to video game speed runs and is likely found in the shadow of many great innovations and great humans in general.

This channel is the gold standard of what YouTube is capable of. Whenever there's a new video I feel like I did back in the old 1970's-1980's era of PBS and BBC documentaries: real content, great storytelling, no bs, perfect announcer, and of course always walking away having learned something. None of this is flashy or loud or over the top, it's just amazing content.

Every single video is a masterpiece. Your story telling is unmatched. My emotions just go on a train wreck each video and it is beautiful.

Summoning Salt is such a good storyteller... as an RPG player for almost 2 full decades now, it's like a dissection of what I like about RPGs and adds in the topic of video games since my love for RPGs is based on my love for stories and video games in general are of interest, and due to having to learn to win the "hard" way how to play Mario Kart and Tetris.. well, I'm always rooting for the second and third place contenders each time he gets to them... 😊 I think it has a bit to do with how I learned Tetris and Mario Kart... which is to say, I had to learn to beat my Mom... I learned drifting in Double Dash and was able to beat her and can still beat her in every Mario Kart because of it, and I'm about as good as she is in Tetris, and when I say "hard" way, I mean my Mom was still actively playing games and I had to figure out the normal, intended, ways of winning against her as a child.

For those wondering, a sub-6 has yet to be achieved and ShockwaveTLS currently holds the record of 7 minutes.

I’ve found speed running fascinating for a long time, dating back to finding Mario Kart 64 speed runs on speed demos archive back in 2006, and even before that. Facing a complete uphill climb, trying over and over, grinding out incremental progress, it’s such a great journey to watch and goes to show how talent is tied so specifically with vigor. Watching this made me realize i might possibly have the 1.00 version of Wii sports. My brother and I use to grind through this game when we were younger and those short "out" cutscenes are ones I've always remembered and thought that was always apart of the game itself. I didn't know there was a second version of the game. I'm going to try to find my copy of the game and see if this is true I will give updates if anyone is interested! Honestly i have never watched a single inning of baseball, but i still find Foolish Bailey awesome.

This is one of those things I never knew I needed. I had a Wii and both the resort and the original. So much fun was had. I figured out how to ki-blast the frisbee and the bowling ball by flinging the wiimote in the right way while attached to my wrist. The B release was the snap. I also used this technique to improve my newspaper throwing.

I love how summoning salt can get you emotionally invested in a speed running community of a game most people haven't played in a decade.

It seems I have the 1.0 version of the game, because seeing that Baseball cutscene looked unnatural. 😄 Also, I'm surprised that boxing was giving so much trouble. One of the most popular articles at my website is, "Wii Sports Boxing – How High Can The Skill Level Go?" That was back in 2007. I thought I was pretty good at the game. But soon after posting my article, someone replied with a video absolutely clobbering the opponent and then not increasing in rank. The video, and who did it, seems to be lost to history, as I couldn't find it.

i played it back in 2011, wow its been 11 years now has it?, we got our Wii Bundle with Mario Kart Wii but not soon after we also bought a mega bundle for Wii Sports with the Additional accesoires, it was amazing and i loved it, when the disc was scratched too heavily, we didnt get ourselves a replacement and not too lang after Wii Sports Resort arrived and we loved this then

The 1.00 thing still bugs me though. They’ve essentially put a paywall in place to hold a record, and it could be solved by something as simple as just… adjusting the times between versions of the game. They do that already for some PAL/NTSC game runs, don’t they? This is as simple as subtracting a few seconds.

Europe and Japan also had 1.00 with it reading 2006 and without the jacket on the title screen, but Wii Sports and the Wii itself came out a few months later in those regions and they added the cutscenes so it's pretty similar to 1.01.

The ending reminds me a lot of ShinyZeni’s sub 1:13:00 for Super Metroid 100%. He worked so fuckin hard, pouring hundreds and hundreds of hours on runs alone. It’s a really great story

I love your videos so much, dont take this the wrong way but the music mixed with your calming voice makes it perfect for me to relax and sleep, but I'm genuinely enjoying the content even if I fall asleep during!

Update: Just 2 weeks after nomad got a 7:02 shockwave got a 7:00.700 which means the sub 7 is so close and is possible!

Just an update, currently the world record sits with shockwave 700 milliseconds off of a sub 7, and emoad nomad just 2 seconds behind him. Holy shit is it close.

When Nomad missed that putt in order to stay in that sub 7 minute area at 43:20, I felt my heart break. I'm glad he still got the current WR for this game though regardless! The grind is really paying off for him! His skill at this game is unprecedented and I just KNOW he'll finally achieve that sub 7 minute goal he has!

What an ending!! If you followed salt long enough you know he almost always ends the video with something like "...and this is where the record stands today". But acknowledging and praising the determination it takes EVERY high-level runner to get where they are on the leaderboards has so much impact. Thank you for bringing this up and thank you for positively pushing people like nomad to reach their goal. Stay determined and keep pushing, Nomad, as well as Shockwave. One of you guys is gonna get the sub 7 and you earned it!!

Nomad's story is really reminding me of Matthias Rustemeyer's quest for 32/32, and how he got to 31/32 so many times. Hopefully this story has a happier ending

I can only imagine the heart-sinking feeling Nomad had when he thought he had finally beat the record, only to find the record was lowered by ELEVEN SECONDS. I imagine a, "What?! How?!" was exclaimed... ...followed by an, "O shit. Here we go again."

My only exposure to Wii Sports was from babysitting a couple younger cousins who bought a Wii when it first came out and they had the 1.00 version of Wii Sports. I genuinely had no idea that they had two versions of the game like that until this video.
