Hey salt, you may already know them but based on the music in your videos you might enjoy "Boards of Canada". Their album "music has the right to children" is a good starting point if you haven't heard of them. Also thanks for the video, it's always a treat.

At 34:13, talking about saving frames with the goomba, did you accidentally say you lost or saves time backwards? Or did I just misunderstand what was being said? Not criticizing either, it's a legitimate question. Thanks also for these awesome videos!

Update for those who havent heard: Pidgey reclaimed the record in July (22:08.533)and a month later Cad225 lowered the record to a 22:07.100, Sharpruns took the record in late December with a 22:06.833, and Cad took it back again with a 22:06.800. Sharp did reclaim the record though, with a 22:05.667.
Vor 10 MonateCorvonix plays +108
I came here expecting to find that we broke the 21 barrier because everytime summoningsalt says that a record seems to be hard to be beaten it gets beaten quickly after the release of the video hahaha
Vor 10 MonateNM Speedruns +68
@Corvonix plays not yet, the human current sum of best is around 22:01. a runner named cad225/cadens225 is getting really close to getting a wr. hes been on 22:06 pace in many runs
Vor 10 MonateL E G S +2
curious if you know where the time save came from, not anywhere close to an expert of this game myself so i cant tell what went differently while watching the 22:08. Was it just cleaned up movement or where there any new tricks? I noticed he entered the iggy door at 558 though but idk if thats just faster 556 or if its something different about it
Vor 10 MonateNM Speedruns +22
@L E G S i think the 558 door is just really clean movement. There is a cycle called astix cycle where you can get 559, which is currently trying to be implemented by cad225 in a run. The way salt makes it sound is that there is like little to no time to save, but the human sum of best is 21:51 so the record still has a ways to go, but not sure how much of that will ever be achieved in a run. im not sure if there were any tricks pidgey did that billy didn't, but i could always be wrong.

I mean by that logic, nobody would care to learn anything at all about things they haven't already experienced unless a creator of some sort frames it a certain way to keep a large audience engaged, which is a pretty sad thought. The story of this game's world record has always been interesting, I think Summoning Salt is simply helping us see what was always there! I do agree that the storytelling is amazing lol. I feel like the first sentence of your comment just feels uncomfortably similar to something like "I'm never going to space but I just spent an hour learning about Mars lol" which is depressing because lots of people act like everything they learn has to have some kind of immediate practical use, otherwise it's a waste of time. That's such an awful and destructive way to view information and knowledge lol :( I'm sorry, I'm just thinking out loud, I'm not accusing you anti-intellectualism or anything, but you got me thinking! This is a sentiment I see expressed far too often, the "Lol why did I just spend an hour watching a video about (insert legitimately interesting topic here)" like I dunno dude, because it's interesting? xD

I truthfully can’t explain the feeling I get whenever SS goes, in all seriousness, “..and that runner’s name… was BlazeTurds420”. It is a unique sensation.
Vor yearangrycharizard +2286

"And ShiveringEroticKingBanana" is still my favorite. From Ninja Gaiden if I remember right
Vor yearAlcoholic Boredom +800
SS has a gift. He takes a (let’s be honest, an unimportant, inconsequential) speedrun and makes it seem like the most epic thing ever. By the end most of us are like, “Screw the moon landing! These guys beating this other guy’s record in 1987’s Punch Out is obviously the greatest achievement of mankind!”
Vor yearmisteryA555 +463

I really love how when the runners are streaming, a lot of them celebrate by saying “WE did it!” It’s really refreshing to see communities where people are friendly rivals or are working together to beat records set by them or other people. It’s not nasty and people don’t get a big head about it.
Vor 9 MonatePaul Sde +12
Mm.. that's just a super common streamer trick to engage viewers and not appear full of themselves. I'd frankly prefer if they said "I did it".

Vor 4 MonateSCORPION FIRE
@LateNightTableCo ok jr
Vor 2 MonateKaren Amyx +1
@Paul Sde What is said is true, but I dont necessarily think the motive is to trick.. the runner is performing for the audience. Without being observed and admired, theres almost no point in a record. And they are there for the 1000s of runs that DONT succeed too. So I'm sure the runner starts to feel like the effort is a "we" thing.
Vor Monatscribble71891 +447
The fake outs you pull like at 44:46 gets me everytime. You have the music, the near-perfect gameplay and then it all goes to shit as you watch the runner sadly fail in the worst way. It makes watching them finally succeed satisfying. You surely know how to invoke emotion with your method of editing. ❤️
Vor 5 Monateemsky +146
I love that every runner that breaks the record gets their own little moment to shine in your videos. Briefly, you present them as the coolest, most skilled person in the world. And they all deserve that! They all accomplished something never before done. Yeah it's a silly little game, but it's pushing human reflexes, memory, and coordination to an absolute limit, and I think it's so cool how you give it so much gravitas. Fantastic vid as always!

It's awesome you credit those that have discovered strats and not just those performing them.

I grew up with this game, and i finished it like 3 times. Really good game!

I loved this game as a kid, glad to see it's still getting attention

I think tee-shirts, cups, etc... with the world record progression chart at the end would make for some really cool and unique merch. Not sure if you'll see this, just an idea.

I never thought a video about history of a speedrun could be this interesting. Love it!

The "Where are they now" ending segment is amazing and I hope it stays like the timelines did.

When he mentioned Matt Turk, I immediately laughed! A good inside joke for this series.
Vor yearHydroGunnr
@EvErLoyaLEagLE I found that funny too
Vor yearjebmak
Agreed, great adddition.
Vor yeardevthegoogleuser +1
@EvErLoyaLEagLE Who's Matt Turk, if I may ask? This is my first full Summoning Salt video I've watched, so I may not be familiar with many inside jokes.

love the timeline addition! your videos are amazing man, i’ve never speedrunned a game before but your presentation makes it so fascinating. thank you so much

The only bad part about a new video going up is knowing I'll have to wait 3 months for the next one :( I know these must take a while to research but they are so good I wish there were more.

coming back to this channel after a long time, and listening to the intro music is like comfort food.

These videos show the unstoppable power of the human spirit. Whether that’s through communities like the speedrunning forums or the sheer willpower of these guys putting in thousands of hours into a video game just to be the best at it. Truly amazing
Vor 8 Monatetinycrash
This is the only game I’ve ever dappled into speedrunning so it’s cool knowing what he’s about to say like “this new massive time save” and all that
Vor 11 MonatePidgey +288
So glad to have played a part in this game’s history! Here’s to a 21 in the future.

Huge props to you on coming back from the motion control issue when trying to get a 22:0x. That takes some insane perseverance and I can't imagine how you felt after the first run
Vor yearAlex Gambrell +3
Much love bro. Thanks for being a part of this wonderful games speedrunning history! ♥
Vor yearTomboy29 +7
My heart absolutely shattered for you when the motion controls killed your WR, you have resilience I can't imagine to come back from that so spectacularly, so quickly. 100% rooting for you to take back the record!!

As someone with teen parents, who grew up playing Mario games on their NES, SNES and GameCube, this game was probably my most anticipated ever, and it delivered in every way. It felt like it was made for us. I know a ton of you feel the same way.
Vor 10 MonateSpebs
What a rollercoaster. Your videos are more engaging than most movies for crying out loud. Keep up the insane content!
Vor 8 MonateFlags
That last section of "where are our protagonists today" is a brilliant addition to the docs

You can tell some dope shit is about to happen when you hear that sudden music change into the abstract horror ish theme

I swear, every time Summoning Salt holds off on giving a runner's name, I'm bracing for AndrewG or Matt Turk to crash the party. Edit: ... Watch the ending.

Watching these videos is always better than the actual runs with people yelling “LeTs Go” the whole damn time lol
Vor 9 MonateGFYFR +2
Another banger of a video as always, and while I'm not a huge fan of the new line chart thing you seem to have adopted (more interesting to look at, though we all understand the numbers), I LOVE the callouts at the end discussing the whereabouts of the record holders
