Update for those who havent heard: Pidgey reclaimed the record in July (22:08.533)and a month later Cad225 lowered the record to a 22:07.100, Sharpruns took the record in late December with a 22:06.833, and Cad took it back again with a 22:06.800. Sharp did reclaim the record though, with a 22:05.667.

I came here expecting to find that we broke the 21 barrier because everytime summoningsalt says that a record seems to be hard to be beaten it gets beaten quickly after the release of the video hahaha

@Corvonix plays not yet, the human current sum of best is around 22:01. a runner named cad225/cadens225 is getting really close to getting a wr. hes been on 22:06 pace in many runs

curious if you know where the time save came from, not anywhere close to an expert of this game myself so i cant tell what went differently while watching the 22:08. Was it just cleaned up movement or where there any new tricks? I noticed he entered the iggy door at 558 though but idk if thats just faster 556 or if its something different about it

​ @L E G S i think the 558 door is just really clean movement. There is a cycle called astix cycle where you can get 559, which is currently trying to be implemented by cad225 in a run. The way salt makes it sound is that there is like little to no time to save, but the human sum of best is 21:51 so the record still has a ways to go, but not sure how much of that will ever be achieved in a run. im not sure if there were any tricks pidgey did that billy didn't, but i could always be wrong.

I feel like the first sentence of your comment just feels uncomfortably similar to something like "I'm never going to space but I just spent an hour learning about Mars lol" which is depressing because lots of people act like everything they learn has to have some kind of immediate practical use, otherwise it's a waste of time. Reminds me of the Quest to Beat Matt Turk. None of his times were filmed, but all were believed, to a point where the community knew he had tricks they didn't, & set out to find the tricks themselves purely based on his times, & they were generally successful. Matt is such a legend.

I really love how when the runners are streaming, a lot of them celebrate by saying “WE did it!” It’s really refreshing to see communities where people are friendly rivals or are working together to beat records set by them or other people. It’s not nasty and people don’t get a big head about it.

Mm.. that's just a super common streamer trick to engage viewers and not appear full of themselves. I'd frankly prefer if they said "I did it".

@Paul Sde What is said is true, but I dont necessarily think the motive is to trick.. the runner is performing for the audience. Without being observed and admired, theres almost no point in a record. And they are there for the 1000s of runs that DONT succeed too. So I'm sure the runner starts to feel like the effort is a "we" thing.

The fake outs you pull like at 44:46 gets me everytime. You have the music, the near-perfect gameplay and then it all goes to shit as you watch the runner sadly fail in the worst way. It makes watching them finally succeed satisfying. You surely know how to invoke emotion with your method of editing. ❤️

I love that every runner that breaks the record gets their own little moment to shine in your videos. Briefly, you present them as the coolest, most skilled person in the world. And they all deserve that! They all accomplished something never before done. Yeah it's a silly little game, but it's pushing human reflexes, memory, and coordination to an absolute limit, and I think it's so cool how you give it so much gravitas. Fantastic vid as always!

Bro I could literally hear myself gasp at 20:40 when the timeline showed how much FadeVanity shaved off THAT much time from the previous wr from Auchgard. Your storytelling for these speedrunning videos has been a marvel to witness but adding in the timeline visuals truly does transcend it to whole another level of presentation that I could not imagined before. Man what a roller coaster of emotions I swear...

One thing I always appreciate in these videos is when Salt says "this happened" and stays quiet to allow the clip of the player to speak for itself. He knows when he doesn't need to explain.

I never thought I would get this into a video about other people speedrunning super mario bros, but let me tell you. This was extremely hype. Watching Pidgey come back from something like that is amazing. I can’t imagine putting in that much work to fail in the way that he did only to come back 11 days later and crush the record. Absolutely amazing feat.

I am so glad I randomly stumbled on this channel. The fact that I can watch long form videos about playing games I’ve never played, in a way which I’ve never been interested in playing them and be totally glued to my screen is a testament to your storytelling ability. I feel like I’m watching a tv show or anime arc with these stories I’m so invested.

Yes I myself found his Mario kart and super Mario 64 because I was searching TAS Mario 64 runs and happened upon Salt's video. His story had me actually crying at points.. so immersive the storytelling is.

I love the addition of the "where are they now" slides. It's the perfect closure to the narratives that you're able to create between these near-total strangers playing an okay Mario game competitively.

It also alleviated a lot of stress personally cause I always get super anxious when people stop being mentioned in these videos haha

These history of world records videos are so good that I'm scared to watch them because I don't want to not have a new one to watch.

Crazy to think that if Raiker kept running they would have gotten lower times than most due to the aspect ratio time save. Also wonder if there were people during Raikers time at top who were close but because they weren't in that aspect ration they weren't seeing the same time saves.

Summoning Salt's storytelling prowess is still unmatched. Only he can narrate speedrunning in such a compelling way that no matter how absurd the material gets, it still feels climactic.

My entire body got shivers when he got to the "3 consecutive records" part, holy moly his way of telling the history is mindblowing.

I love how he moves through chronologically and gives credit to the incredible runs that are obsolete these days. It’s easy to look at old runs and not be impressed because of some later exploit. Love these videos so much.

It's what makes these videos legitimately good endeavors. Going from the start and seeing the gradual progress within the game's community really puts it in perspective.

I also like how he includes some near-misses - the record itself is an amazing achievement, but there's something to be said for second place, which so often gets overlooked

It feels absolutely unreal seeing myself in this video. Although I never quite held a WR, I’d like to think that my personal best time proved to the community that Fade could indeed be contested with, as I made a mistake of about 5 seconds in 8-2 and still came within 3 seconds of his run. It’s awesome to see how much further the community has taken the game since then. BillyJoe is such a talented runner and I’m so happy to see his hard work paying off. Watching this was so nostalgic for me and definitely makes me more inclined to make a return to Mario Wii in the near future and leave my mark for good. >:)

As someone with teen parents, who grew up playing Mario games on their NES, SNES and GameCube, this game was probably my most anticipated ever, and it delivered in every way. It felt like it was made for us. I know a ton of you feel the same way.
