That section of Zac narrating the run was special even by the high standards of your work. Not a runner and haven't even played Lego Star Wars, but the way you edited it and his obvious passion for the game gave me butterflies in my stomach. Would love to see more runners given the spotlight to narrate their own key moments in that way.

What I love about this history of world records is that each "chapter" that covers each Champion builds them up and makes them feel like actual world champions of a more physical sport and gives them this strange amount of gravitas. Love Salt's vids.

I love the time lowering chart. You should look into using vector graphics for these instead of raster graphics so it's not so blurry when zoomed in. Great video as always, you make any speed game seem like the most interesting one out there

The thing I love the most about the speedrunning community, is how much of a group effort it all is. Everyone is working together to find all the best tricks to shave off a few extra seconds, and in the end it's all about your individual skill if you're able to be the best one at executing it all.

It's incredible how a community can discover dozens of new tricks for a game every so often and completely break it. I love hearing these stories

The part of these videos that always get me is the fact that at the end of the video a new chapter is about to begin in the history of that game. The video will bring so much attention to the scene that it would cause a explosion of popularity.

The amount of time and commitment put in by runners of these long games is downright inspiring

The fact that Summoning Salt can fascinate me with a timeline of speedrun world records of a game I never really knew or cared about is simply astounding.

Summoning Salt has secured a place in speedrunning history as one of the best filmmakers of all time.

A summoning salt video is also awesome to watch and is such an immersive rollercoaster of emotion. I can't wait to see what other legendary story in gaming history is uncovered next. Runs for games that would be pleasant visits would be some of the Resident Evil games, Symphony of the Night, or Super Monkey Ball

That chart at the end is all over the place, it's probably the only speedrun where anybody can jump on and find something new and take the endless top spot.

@Puncake Haha yeah I saw that too, but I was thinking "This is gonna be a huge grind for sub 3" and then sub 3 happened way sooner than I thought and they just kept going xD

I good hint is that the more broken a game is the more likely it is to have a ridiculous time. Take portal 1 vs 2 runs. Portal 1 is around 15min because you can enter a very weird state where the players actual position and camera are desynced and it lets you to shoot through walls and other stuff. Portal 2 patched this bug before it was discovered and the result is that portal 2 takes around 2hrs to complete a speedrun. I just assume any super glitchy game will let you get down to single digit minutes eventually.

Summoning Salt and EmpLemon have got to be the best long form channels on YouTube. They're in a different category than the long form game reviewers imo. I love me some Whitelight, Joseph Anderson, Noah Caldwell, matthewmatosis, etc. But these videos inspire a different feeling altogether.

I just finished watching the video, decided to check the leaderboard and a new record was set just 2 days ago! This was an incredibly fun watch and shoutout to all the runners who have participated in it's history.

I didn't think I would like this one as much as the super mario and mario kart vids but this might actually be my favorite one now. The buildup to that 2:26.59 was amazing. And just a crazy thing to happen in general. This record chase is so unique too. Usually it's just a few people actually competing. To see the top ten runners all together, setting PBs, getting records, and breaking through was incredible. I forgot his name but I especially love the reaction of the guy who was ahead of record out of nowhere and set a several minute PB. That's what it's all about.

Not sure if you take requests but I'd love to see a Spelunky and/or Spelunky 2 WRP! It's an amazingly difficult platformer with a solid speed running community and lots of skips/tricks with the newest major skip having been discovered only a few months ago! Love your channel, this content is impeccable :)

The thing that always makes me happy when watching these videos is hearing what the runners are thinking and feeling during their record runs. Moments like this remind me of sports documentaries, and it's why I like these videos so much.

3 days ago Zacc just beat the record down to 2h24m20s. Eroad held it for about a month with 2h24m25s but Zacc just came back kicking. What absolute champs those 2 are, and all the others who managed to find the skips and glitches. I love this community

@FilmjesMan I found taking the base chart and then pasting it onto a 4K canvas in gimp and drawing over it cleans things up super well. That way even when you zoom into it for close ups like summoningsalt does, it doesn't have nearly as muvh distortion.

That 2;26:XX race had the most insane sequence of events that I ever saw in the Speed Run world. A world record, followed by multiple PBs from multiple runners, followed by the barrier break on the very last run. It was surreal.

I've never even played this game and I watched the whole thing anyway and oh yeah, it always warms my heart. A true testament to how talented this guy really is and how hard he works on these videos. @Nigel Thornberry I see your point, but if more interviews were spliced in throughout the documentary (as opposed to just at the end during the huge monumental run) then this spoiling effect would be lessened. I think Abyssoft has a 2 hour long documentary about MR vs Dan in Mario Kart and it had smaller commentary clips from each about the different events they went to and the different strats that were being used at that time

Not only would halo 1 combat evolved be so incredible to watch - I truly believe it would have an amazing impact for the halo community - I know how long these videos take to make But I really think the halo community, and the gaming community, needs a summoning salt halo spreedrunvideo to show once again how our community finishes the fight.

this video particularly hit close to home to me. the very first videogame i ever owned for myself was lego star wars 2 tOT. seeing that most of the ways to speed this game up were jumping on slopes and sequence breaking levels- things I did religiously after YEARS of playing the games. I'm not speedrun material, but I remember doing tricky slope jumps to skip things. just a bit of nostalgiac rambling here but: the particular spot that comes to mind is in episode 4 level 2, where you get to the section where you have to force build a satellite and build a walkway up a slope to the next area, theres these cans you can force build as obiwan, if you CAREFULLY land on top of those cans, you can jump up to the platform above and get a minikit. i had no access to the internet, so while that isnt new, the fact i discovered it independently by myself just enhances my attachment to the game

At 26:00 when my most favourite song starts playing (Void, by Rosentwig) I feel like I’m dreaming. Thank you for the respect you pay to every runner, and for shining a light on all the hours of work they put in. Awesome video.

I've just watched a 100% run of this game. The amount of 1p2c is actually insane in story levels. I'd recommend giving any% a good watch just to see how nuts these runners are. I could never even hope to run this game lol

It always makes me laugh when it goes “and not only did he get the record… but this… is what he did” and then the dramatic pause and the final reveal shows he knocked a few minutes off a 2.5 hour run. I’m always hoping for some crazy discovery that shows a huge drop straight down.

I remember how I was in the process of 100% completing this game, and as I got close to finishing it, I saw the first ever trailer for The Skywalker Saga and lost my mind. Lego games are my childhood and I will play as many of them as I possibly can whenever they come out

Imagine all the insane speed runs we would have missed out on if these runners hadn't stayed home to grind on Valentine's Day.

Wow. Not only is it so exciting to see my name just for a brief moment in one of these videos after watching the channel for so long, but to see my favourite speed game chosen for a video made me so excited when I saw it come up this morning. Although I wasn’t around much in the community after my times, I have still been actively keeping up with the leaderboards up to the recent 2:24s and I’d really like to just note how absurd these times seem to me. I remember when I was most actively running and I spent my summer holidays from school playing over 6-9 hours most days consistently grinding out ILs for hours on end or I was strat finding looking for the smallest of movement optimisations just to make sub 3 more viable. A large time was also spent streaming for hours going for new records. Through this i had been under the impression sub 3 was barely viable, but unfortunately I believed that the game would hit a huge holt as it seemed very hard to even achieve this at the time. HOWEVER after the HUGE improvements, time and effort put in by the new gen runners, I was no less than shocked with just what can be done when you have a highly motivated team of runners. So i thank them massively, for not only making so many huge milestones become reality, but for being an amazing community. I remember when I had just started speedrunning and the record was in the high 3:30s and I had caught a few of tsgs records live and from there I knew the game had so much potential and it wouldn’t have been done without everyone’s hard work to achieve these records the years. It has been an amazing journey and it’s far from over yet. I can’t wait to see who gets the sub 2:20. Hey, I might even come back and try :) I would like to thank salt too for giving the speedruns of this game one of the, or even the biggest pushes it’s ever had in publicity and through this I hope it not only increases the size of the community massively but also the competition. I believe 2023 is going to be a massive year for TCS. ❤️

Hey Salt! Would you consider doing shorter episodes for some modern games like Risk of Rain 2, Path of Exile, or Neon White? I don't know that they have the quite the storied history as most of the games covered on the channel, but I adore their in built leaderboards and competitive nature, and would love to see how they've evolved.

Despite being 90 minutes long, I really think Salt does a good job summing up the most important while also diving in depth to how records were broken. This guy sure knows how to make videos.

this is because he created this genre of video, the speedrun history genre, so his template is literally one he created from the graphics and atlantic tapes specific soundtrack his videos honestly from an all around audie visual and information aspect is all his own and proven to be a true journey time and time again.. we have been witnessing history in the making..

The 16 hr/d anecdote really just convinces me of the absolute misery of live speedrun world record grinding I think I'd feel much more satisfaction spending that time developing a TAS

11:02... huh. I remember when me and my friend were about 9 and playing this game for the first time. We couldn't figure out how to get C3PO onto that ledge, and we were stuck in that room for literally hours... until we gave up and just punched him up onto the ledge.
