What's actually in the Green New Deal?

The Green New Deal is an ambitious plan to fight the effects of climate change. It’s the only American plan that actually acknowledges the size of the impending crisis. And it contains some difficult truths that we might not want to hear.
Read the Green New Deal resolution here: ocasio-cortez.house.gov/sites/ocasio-cortez.house.gov/files/Resolution%20on%20a%20Green%20New%20Deal.pdf
For additional context I recommend this piece by Vox’s Umair Irfan on the United Nations climate report, where the world’s best climatologists tell us how urgent of a problem this is: www.vox.com/2018/10/8/17948832/climate-change-global-warming-un-ipcc-report
This piece from Vox’s David Roberts, shows that world leaders really aren’t taking this urgency seriously. www.vox.com/2016/10/4/13118594/2-degrees-no-more-fossil-fuels
Finally, you should read this explainer of the Green New Deal, followed by this story (in list form) by Hannah Northey:

If you want to read about the Green New Deal in the lens of the 2020 election, I recommend this piece explaining Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s proposal: https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/5/4/18527458/climate-change-jay-inslee-for-president-2020 Inslee has the most ambitious climate proposals; it is, as Vox's David Roberts writes, the Green New Deal translated into policy. Wind and solar only work when it is windy or sunny. We should go nuclear. And the biggest thing is we will be reliant on the government wich always fails. Is takes away so much freedom the thing that makes America great. And finally it would have verry little impact on global emmisions and it would possibly bankrupt America. America would fall apart

Who pays for it. The government? It’s running a trillion dollar deficit every year but you think they can still employ millions of people while destroying billions of dollars of industry. It’s going to bankrupt the country unless you reallocate finds away from all the social programs. But then loads of old people and poor people won’t have health care and old people won’t be getting any social security payments.

what people don't realize that America only admits 14.75% greenhouse gases. So if this deal were to be implemented, you are only looking at a .2 Celsius reduction. You see the catch with the green new deal is to have other countries follow suit. If we can't even afford it (without destroying multiple industries), what makes you think developing countries can ...

There is a scientific consensus that renewables are not viable, and most scientists see solar panels as worse than fossil fuels for climate change. I would be all for funneling money into something like ITER and reforestation though. China and India for example have achieved wonders simply by planting millions of trees completely offsetting their much worse greenhouse contributions. You'd literally get a hundred percent or better return on your investment just putting the money into that, than you would by attacking traditional fuel sources.

2 problems with this video: 1st, they skipped over the part of the story where the green party wrote the green new deal about a decade ago including a part about paying for it partially through demilitarization, and they have run presidential candidates on the promise of a green new deal. Since this democratic version was written you can find it called the ecosocialist green new deal. 2nd, they claim the dems will certainly implement it in 2020 if they win power, which is just proaganda. Much of the dems are still opposed to the gnd because they are owned by the corporations the gnd would destroy. Only a few dems would actually move this forward, whereas every Green has promised to work toward the gnd since its conception.

The green new deal is the biggest joke I have ever seen. Even with unlimited funding there is no way the US, let alone the entire would will be 0 emissions by 2050. I am all for improving the world and developing better sources of renewable energy, but the goals and timeline suggested in the GND is laughable. Its so laughable I can't even take it seriously.

@Brian you are assuming that energy production/consumption must grow infinitely, and same with the rest of industry, which is physically impossible. You are also assuming the stability of our current system, which is incredibly unstablev and we are overdue for an economic downturn. You imply we ought to do nothing when drastic times call for drastic measures. Our economy totally collapsed just over a decade ago, and people are really suffering still. In the 30s when that happened, fdr confronted the economic crash, the dustbowl, and a lot of the people's needs after strong unions led by socialists demanded the nd. This led to the most prosperous economic period in history. As a result of the nd, Americans built a lot that was previously inconceivable. It worked because the goal was not profit, but people (except minority communities). This is the kind of bold change our country needs again even if it leads to less consumption overall (with some modern changes). In the 21st c, there are other ways to ensure a booming economy without perpetuating a throw-away culture of toxic products made with toxic energy backed by the gamblers of wall st. If we continue the way we are going we will have nothing left. I'm going to put this simply: other animals don't foul their water, and humans have done this on a massive scale. Money is just a stand in for what we prioritize as a society, and right now, and things like clean water and keeping the sea levels from engulfing our cities ought to be at the top of our list. Your naysaying does nothing, but the gnd is an agreement to focus on and environmental-economic strategy to overhaul the old industrial system that isnt working for Americans.

Eagle-winged Turtle Your assuming: 1. This will create jobs and generate economic growth 2. This will increase industry and increase economic growth. In order to create jobs you first have to actually create products or grow an industry, which means you have to have an understanding of what you are building. The GND does not do this. Any sensible energy transition plan should be able to tell you: - how much generation is required to sustain a society - how much capacity and generation your energy sources will have. If I ask a GND supporter how much solar capacity the GND plans to increase in any given year, can you answer this question? No, because not only does the GND provide ZERO data of any kind in terms of actual power generation or projected capacity increases, it doesn’t even specify what type of energy sources it plans to use beyond just renewable. Additionally in order to grow the industry you have to have a good understanding of how that energy source is used. The GND wants to massively increase renewable capacity. Ok just using data from the US BLS and assuming every home in the USA uses a 7.5KW solar array, you can calculate that the net generation from residential solar is approximately 36% of our net portfolio. That’s great but not even close to being enough to replace fossil fuels or other energy sources. Here’s where the GND is devoid of logic. If you have to use more than residential solar this will require you to build- utility scale wind and solar. Utility scale wind and solar takes up sq miles of land. You cannot build these within city limits, and in order to maximize your production you will want to build large arrays which produce very large amounts of power. The GND contains ZERO language of any kind about transmission infrastructure. This doesn’t make any sense. 1. Using low voltage power line to transfer electricity across large distance will cause significant power loss due to overheating of lines. 2. If you attempt to transfer very large energy loads ok distribution cable the heat generated in the process will literally fry your line and potentially cause it to catch on fire. Unless you are planning on completely redesigning urban development of every city in the USA you will require transmission line to transfer your electricity from utility scale solar and wind to your cities, but apparently the GND doesn’t want to use any transmission infrastructure. This suggests either the co-sponsors want to completely redesign this country or they have no idea how electricity is actually transferred in this country. This is just one example of how the GND is complete utter nonsense. As for economic growth, if you can’t supply electricity to your industries and businesses your economy will collapse as they are unable to produce their products.

@Brian first of all, the gnd is an investment that will pay most of itself off eventually because of the economic growth in the plan. 2ndly, the military can be cut a lot more than you think
