I started learning everything about MTG about 4 months ago, and I understood about half of what he said. Also I've already come to the decision that I will never spend money on MTG packs. It took me less than half a year to hate Hasbro, and to an extent WotC, to its core and with a deep dreadful passion. Good job to them for that.

As someone who has 1 tutorial commander game under their belt and is interested getting into MTG with the LoTR set, it's really confusing to know what I get for buying things (yeah I also recently got hooked on your channel too! Shuffle up and play and Dies to removal are soo fun)

Go with one of the LOTR precons and then if you want to play the booster box game buy a set booster. The precons will give you 4 playable decks to switch between.

I definitely saw that the price for Blightsteel Colossus decreased after pulling one on the List for March of the Machine.

I opened a masterpiece Wurmcoil Engine in my prerelease packs that I sold to buy a Nintendo Switch. Now I have to spend $40 on a single pack to even have a chance of something like that.

The Prof totally understands when he says he was sold on Dr. Who after the Saga announcement, that's what we all want from Magic for our own beloved other franchises.

Thanks for the podcast the both of you! I like the idea of the serialized version of the one ring, because it can be seen as a metaphor for the greed to possess it, that all the characters in the story feel. And just like in the story, the ones who greed for it the most, will have to pay dearly and yet will probably never even get a whiff of it. Apart from that I really wish there was more story-telling of the events and characters of Magic's universe (**) and way less gambloid "collector" boosters and over-commercialized products. I would love quality over quantity but it seems Wizards would like it the other way round. Just my two cents. And congrats to the both of you for being able to afford having kids despite playing Magic! :D ** edit: I think this is also one of the most profound shortcomings of Magic the Gathering franchise and thus its lack of widespread success with audiences beyond people who play the game. It lacks storytelling. Humans are obsessed with stories and if Wizards made more of an effort to write awesome stories they would reach a far greater number of audience and maybe even leave some kind of story for the collective consciousness to remember it by beyond the lifetime of the game itself.

In defence of the Doctor Who Collector Boosters, they will allow people to more readily acquire singles from the commander decks without having to buy whole precons so we can potentially avoid a True Name Nemesis situation. That being said, I absolutely wish Collector Boosters were more affordable.

You just inspired me to me to invent a new format, commander shuffleable. You split your 100 card deck in half and just use the first half until you run out of cards to draw then add the second deck to your library.

When Vince goes on his rant about the warhammer decks being flavor slam dunks all I can think about is the mana rock with the mark of Khorne on it producing blue black. I can just imagine Khorne sitting in his study, examining some ancient and powerful magical text, petting his cat. Definite flavor slam dunk, 10/10.

Congratulations on keeping your child alive for 9 years Prof. It ain't easy. I despise the one of one ring idea as much as I love the theme. It's a literal golden ticket that Charlie Bucket isn't allowed to be in the chance for. If anyone is under any allusions that it's going to end up anywhere but with an uberwhale they are deluding themselves. It's a true reflection of how greedy this company really is. As much as the idea is wonderful, all they had to do to make it better was to put it in draft boosters too. Wotc says you are not invited to the table unless you're buying premium product.

I think the unknown part is an issue, but it's why I love watching your booster box game videos. Something in my brain turns hearing about odds into white noise. I would rather than just see what they are when someone opens them. Obviously my box will be different, but watching your videos gives me the "feel" of the set.

As a lord of the rings fan I love the lord of the rings set as a magic the gathering fan I’m feeling screwed over. It would be great if the collector boosters could be drafted. If it cost 3- 4$ to print boosters packs they should be sold for something similar to the old msrp.

The talk at 32:24 has been going on since Kamigawa. Go-Shintai commander and Yoshimaru, Ever faithful has the commander Logo and is said to be the commander decks if you google them, but they are actually only ever found in the Set boosters.

This is one of the best discussion team up I've seen, keep doing these! That said, I've never had as little fun as I have had opening set boosters, just going for more than one rare and getting garbage. And most of the good rares nowadays are so hard to get with the mythical slots that it's not worth opening a box. I have stopped buying boosters it is so not fun anymore.

The power creep on the commons from the LoTR set is going to have an impact on pauper.

I agree with donating cards. I kept maybe 3 commander decks, and a few of my fav cards and just donated my stuff to a friend. He's gonna give the stuff to new players at the LGS.

Great video - I think you really capture the sentiment of the average player. I preordered the commander decks months ago assuming great henge would be in the product - only to find out its a 1 in 30 box topper only product. Their practices of making cards only available in select products in the line is predatory

Vince is so right about Pokemon boosters, I just struggle to care about magic because the boosters are so deliberately confusing. Just give me a draft booster that sometimes contains chase cards any day.

I miss when I could pick up 1-3 packs at a game store, knowing the lineup of what will be there like what the prof said, and maybe finding something for my deck or getting stuff I'd wanna trade or make a new deck with.

Prof's observation about Vince getting excited at the mention of Star Wars is really on point. I don't particularly are about Warhammer or Doctor Who, but the LoTR nerd in me loves the idea of playing Samwise with a reskinned Horizon Canopy. Another really solid point, one by Vince, is that, while MTG IP Isn't as popular (outside Magic) as Warhammer, etc., the rules of Magic are awesome, so it makes sense that Hasbro would latch on to this idea of using other IPs to sell MtG cards. There's still way too much fucking prodcut, though.

Wizards did have a magazine with set list and current pricing, at that time in the early 90s. Oh yeah we knew what we could possibly get and completely agree with professor on this. Also in the same boat, I did get rid of my cards. I just got back into mtg 10 months and what a multiverse it has become.

Having just got back into playing Magic and being a huge fan of Commander. I'm actually pretty thrilled to have multiple versions of some of the legendary creatures. Especially with the gaps in between. However, I do agree that there are too many versions of the planeswalkers from set to set. Personally I would like to see more of the legendary creatures take center stage in the narrative, and they need to be the focus in the sets as well. And honestly I think the legendary's are more interesting. Don't get me wrong, I love the planeswalkers and I am excited to see Quint make his debut as a planeswalker in the actual game itself. But I don't need them running around everywhere all the time.

I can already see how the random guy at an lgs who got the one ring getting choked by his friend and then he, his friend, running with it while slowly turning into a foul creature.

I really hope the “special collector boosters” have an art style similar to the box art and are cheaper. I like the art style on the packaging.

I wish more of the products were draftable. I wouldn't mind seeing Draft and Set Boosters just be a single product line. And I think The List cards are an awesome include. Just extra little boosts that are sometimes thematic. I like buying set-based Jumpstart, like a single pack, because I'd also grab a theme booster. The floor of a single set based Jumpstart is higher since it'll contain two set rares, one unique to the Jumpstart packs. The Standalone Jumpstart sets do have a much higher ceiling... If you open a hi-value or unique new rare. If. I've found the floor to be a lot weaker, and I'd be better off buying singles of any new card from them and hoping it maybe brings down the prices of others.

I was talking to a guy about Pokémon a few days ago, and he was bringing up how the tcg should maybe introduce different boosters like Magic and I had to turn into mini-prof to rant about why that would be NO FUN lol. Even just seeing this vid on it I see how it has only gotten more confusing over time. The slide shows are so crazy to see, how could they make something so simple into such a labyrinth of options.

On the topic of multiple booster types, I feel it's really complicated. I want for even draft boosters to have a shot at getting all those special treatments and whatnot. I also think that Set boosters are fine because they are made for just opening without drafting. The price isn't too bad normally and they get those slightly higher quality pulls with less commons that are just tossed, sometimes an extra rare, the guaranteed foil, and sometimes the List thing. I'd love for them to be improved, such as Vince's take on the List where it's either guaranteed in every pack or is always a chase reprint if you do open one. Preferably both, but we know WoTC isn't growing wings and getting a halo anytime soon. Collector boosters are just too expensive. Always. I'm also not a fan of the extended art treatment, which gets into the special treatment spam thing. Extended gets guaranteed slots, but they also aren't foil. It's stupid for what you're paying for. Then of course there's the foil quality being crap in most cases. The spam as a whole I'm kind of between, because I like the normal versions normally being more accessible with specials being the collector pieces (Sheoldred's case is obviously a fail here. I'm not sure why smaller numbers of other treatments isn't driving up their prices compared to the normal version). The chances to upgrade slots with better rarity and the "theming" thing for Set boosters I'm also not a big fan of, but they aren't as egregious. And put Arena codes in packs ffs. I hate having to choose to either deal with multiple collections or ignoring an entire portion of the community for the game. I do have to wonder with single booster type games like Pokemon. We all know, similar to MtG, that the important stuff is normally at the higher rarities. How do players and collectors feel about the chaff? I mean with Set boosters at least I can sometimes end up with more than one rare and I'm only paying an extra buck or two normally.

For the spellbooks and commander collections, I am 100% convinced Commander Collection Black is just Signature Spellbook Liliana and Commander Collection Green is Signature Spellbook Freyalise. They just changed the branding so they could charge twice as much for the same thing.
