I have had this thought inside me for so long about how the rise and resistance of bacteria and fall of antibiotics will eventually end humanity and bring forever pain and loss to billions of people. But watching this video made me seriously gain some hope/faith in humanity that I've been desperately looking for for a long time. I will recommend and share this video to many people and I would appreciate if more people could be educated at least on the surface level on this matter. Fantastic video.

It's crazy how youtube has evolved over the past years. This content is better than content we see in movies and TV shows lol, and this is totally free content. I think youtube is going to overtake traditional media, it really is changing the entire way people consume content. I think your channel could a pioneer of the future, at least in the animation circle. You are the Casey Neistat of animations. Anytime I get a little confident about my animations, I come to this channel and get humbled very quickly lol.

Fun fact, we've actually known about and have used bacteriophages for treatment ever since before the cold war IIRC. It's just that the bacteriophage research went on in Georgia which was part of USSR and the antibiotic research was in the west so bacteriophages kind of got ignored because people just hated on anything relating to the USSR.

Viruses are shaped like that because a polyhedra where all the sides are the same doesn't require large proteins, or lots of different proteins, to build, so the virus needs less genetic material to encode it. Also, when all the pieces are the same, the structure is more likely to randomly assemble in the cell than if a whole bunch of different parts all have to be present in the same place at the same time

The main problem at the moment is that antibiotics are often fairly broad spectrum, ie. they can affect many types of bacteria. Bacteriophages tend to be highly specialised, so at the moment huge libraries would be needed so that a good match could be made. Antibiotics also have other gaps where they are not effective or have toxicity to human cells. Best case scenario is that we stop screwing ourselves over with ridiculous antibiotic usage and ALSO learn how to use bacteriophages. Both are imperfect, but together they make a pretty good toolbox for treating infections.

Vor 6 Monate
The Rymples
The Rymples

@Daniel Your actually right there, but I've realized a new problem. Your immune system does still see Bacteriophages as an invader, which means you actually need more bacteriophages to fight than you think just to get past the compliment system and the basic immune system.

Vor 5 Monate
The Rymples
The Rymples

@Daniel It either takes a couple hundred or thousand, depending on the infection. Mass producing that is also very difficult, as you'd need to keep the bacteriophages alive which would require bacteria inside the medicine, but that would mean there would be dead bacteria, which can trigger an immune response called sepsis which is lethal towards you.

Vor 5 Monate
Daniel
Daniel

@The Rymples Never say never, I don't know how many bacteriophages would be necessary to exterminate a certain bacteria but they sure aren't many, you could probably fit 100 different species of bacteriophages in a standardized medicine that works against the most common bacterial infections, I don't think it'll happen necessarily, but it could

Vor 5 Monate
The Rymples
The Rymples

@Daniel This does happen in addition, I didn't say my comment was the ONLY thing that was good, but I don't think using Bacteriophages for mild infections will ever happen, as you'd need to know the exact species of bacteria said mild infection is being caused by and get the exact species of bacteriophage. I promise you no doctor is going to do that to save you from the discomfort of a mild infection.

Actually, sometimes bacteria can be the deadliest thing if you say viruses because they kill many many bacteriophages whenever they get infected and don’t die and many future ones

You know, it was kinda odd, that only Russian and Georgia, were the only two countries that used pages to treat infections, while in the west and the rest of the world still rely on new antibiotics to fight off infections.

I liked every video been made here. I didn't listen well since I'm doing papers but how long does this phage live? also what happens to them inside the body if they continue to multiple being in constant war? will they just keep multiplying? Like sand put inside a balloon but keeps increasing?

How is it possible that we keep on ignoring the unlimited medical potential of phages. Growing concerns about antibioresistance should act as a detonator... and yet... nothing ! Thanks for your video !

Lol I got this recommended after I had a kinda heated discussion with my aunt because I didn't want to take antibiotics for a simple cold. We got a cold at the same time and she stuffed herself full of antibiotics and said I had to too, for the same reasons expresed in this video I don't like to take antibiotics unless is absolutely necessary.

Hello, can you please answer this question.. If phages evolve, will they ever develop into using our body cells as hosts?

Vor 8 Monate

As far as I know, phages are attacking a special part of the bacteria type of cell. I think it's part of the membrane where they attach to. Antibitotics directly attack that part where as phages just need it to do their thing. Don't take my word though, just what I picked up via school, videos, articles and so on

I swim in the sea and I can only imagine the bloodbath in the clear blue water. The reason why you need to wash your clothes immediately after swimming in the sea is that because seawater is laden with billions of bacteria and that there is not enough time for the viruses to kill them all.
