Disneys 'The Little Mermaid' may be filled with magic, songs and living happy ever after, but do you know the real dark and disturbing story of the original fairy tail?
Here is the real and original messed up story, written by Hans Christian Anderson, that inspired Disneys well known classic "The Little Mermaid"

The room you’re in looks so peaceful and ocean themed. It fits the video.

I’m a Goth and I love horror. My favorite kind of horror is dark fantasy. Dark fantasy is a sub genre of fantasy that combines horror or gothic elements with fantasy elements. It’s part of the subculture but not the foundation. The Little Mermaid is my favorite fairy tale for that reason and also because I love witches.

I don't know why I'm here after 2 years, but the 2nd version (the 300 years of good deeds) is the original one.

This beautiful Toei Animation film, Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, was part of a Japanese film festival in 1975, and later reached the U.S. in 1979. ... It's clear here how heavily Disney was inspired by the Toei film, from the heroine's fish companion to her favoring a statue of the prince.

Came across you video, you got most of the parts right, but I'm curious as to what version you've read, as in the original story (1837, danish version), she's turned into a sister of the wind, not air, and must travel the world and pass through windows, where they are open. If she goes through a house, where a good child lives, a year is removed from her sentence, but if she passes through a house with a naughty child, she shall cry and for each tear, a day is added. I'm quite curious as to, why none of the English versions has this ending, as H.C. Andersen wrote it? The whole point of the story, is to make the children feel for the little mermaid, so that they'll behave nicely and help her get her soul, after all...

I read a few different versions of the story, and tbh wasn;t sure exactly which was the original. There were many different variations on the end, this was the one I liked best x

This was so depressing but I still loved my beautiful storybook as a kid with oil paintings printed on it. I remember it was so sad that when she danced it felt like knives cutting into her feet.

All Hans Christian Anderson stories are very dark really...Even the musical about Hans Christian Anderson shows you how his fairy tales have a darker side to them...There are a lot of sacrifices made in his stories and their is always a moral xxx

Go figure you put this out now, I'm in a play called Mermaid for uni, where I'm Grandmer (the mother figure to all the mermaids), and one half of the sea witch!

I love how Cinderella tells that beauty isn’t all that important and being kind goes a long way. The step sisters cut off parts of their feet to get the slipper on. In the end they get their eyes poked out by the birds. Cinderella was always kind to the animals.

I keep saying this, "Cinderella" as we know is not based on The Brothers Grimm's dark and bloody take on the story. It's based Charles Perrault's version which has the fairy godmother, glass slippers, and the pumpkin coach, but no bloodshed. At the end of Perrault's, Cinderella forgives the stepfamily, takes them to the palace with them, and marries the stepsisters off to two noblemen. The most notable difference, however, was that the ball was a two-night affair, and Cinderella lost the glass slipper on the second night.

Great idea for a series and I’d love to watch! Just some feedback though - I found the music a little loud and overwhelming and couldn’t focus on what you were saying so had to give up and switch off around the minute mark... This could just be me though as I’m currently recovering from a brain injury and am incapable of concentrating on two things going on at once... Just in case it might have an effect on anyone else though, something to be careful of for the future. Hope you don’t take this the wrong way, I love your videos usually! X

Just Josie Jo much appreciated :) I’ll look forward to the next one! X

Sarah Gies thank you so much for letting me know. I know sometimes on different devices that background music can sound slightly different so I will certainly keep it lower for future videos x
