King's Field: The Ancient City (also known as King's Field 4) was the last game FromSoftware made for the King's Field series. How does the predecessor of the Souls series compare? Does it still hold up?

1. The blacksmith pulls on an alternate reality blacksmith every time you repair an additional item, hence why they all repair at once. 2. Quick storytime. I got this game from a bargain bin at gamestop when I was in high school. Played it for like 4 hours, kept falling in the lava pits and my dumb ass couldn't figure out what was happening. Like 2 years later I picked it back up, figured it out, and binged the game. It's super jank control wise but still a great game if you can get used to it, wish I could replay it. It definitely does feel like the devs put a lot of shit in just to troll you though, see: wavecrasher. 3. If you don't have interest in magic you can sell the MP bracelet and pretty much have unlimited money, it sells for a boatload.

I wonder would making game run faster makes the experience bearable? Assuming emulation is an option, I wonder can you make the game run like 1.75 speed, so that most of the jank is managable with updated speed.

OK BUT tiny little detail about king's field that made me love DS2 even more; the way fake walls were handled in King's Field (having them slide back and then raise upward) was changed in demon's souls and dark souls, by having illusory walls be... illusory, rather than mechanical. But DS2 handled these like King's Field. I wonder if some more KF designers were on DS2? damn even that demon boss sitting in the lava was likely inspiration for the old iron king

This recurring thing of calling them metroidvanias... I mean, you could just call them dungeon crawlers. That'd be easier, surely? Because... they feature expansive, maze-like dungeons, full of traps, locked doors, the occasional puzzle, and monsters. You spend your time literally crawling through a dungeon. While the movement and combat systems might be superficially different, the King's Field series in particular isn't actually any different to the old grid-based dungeon crawlers from the days like... I dunno, The Bard's Tale or something. And arguably, that's the origin and essence of metroidvania games anyway - they were just 2D dungeon crawlers, adhering to the same shared foundation of maze + locked doors + monsters. What made them stand out was that they combined side-scrolling platformer and dungeon crawler concepts. Even the original Doom was actually just a dungeon crawler when you think about it - the shooting aspect was not the primary gameplay hook. You could technically run straight past most of the monsters - the main gameplay hook was "You're in a maze. Find the exit. There are obstacles." Leaving aside unique maps like Dead Simple, Doom was never about combat arenas (contrary to the modern Doom reboot and its rewriting of history) - the game couldn't even spawn in enemies, outside of the Doom 2 boss fight; all enemies had to be hand-placed on the map ahead of time. But I digress. Dungeon crawler. Simple.

11:00 I feel like this ought to be said: these fake/illusory walls have been a staple of the first person RPG genre for a LONG time. I remember it as far back as lands of lore and might and magic where you could find an out of place pebble on the walls that serve as a switch to open the doors, or the classic lever sconces. And there's probably predecessors beyond that.

I remember getting the game right around the time the first Spider-Man movie came out, was definitely an exciting day. Hopefully From might come back to the series directly someday, a new entry with all that they've learned from their post-King's Field titles would really be a blast to see. And if not a revival of the series, at least a successor that was first-person hack'n'slash would be a welcome sight.

Love this video, played all these games with my parents when I was a kid. They are our all-time favorites. The Shadow Tower games are very similar and worth checking out too, especially the JP only one for PS2 (has a fan translation). I became a fan of Demons Souls and then the rest later in life, and thought they had such a similar vibe. I was blown away when I checked the game cases and saw that they were both made by From Software. Such an incredible company that has had a huge impact on my life for almost 30 years now!

I grew up with this series. It was one of the first games I remember playing on PlayStation. When I first played it I had no idea what I was doing, but for some reason I just never forgot about it. I later came back to it and beat all three of the US released titles, and still own the discs for those games now, they all still work as well! The exploration, the secrets, and the difficulty, and how your character goes from struggling to deal with a single skeleton to being able to easily handle dragons and demons all adds to that classic experience you talked about in this video. This game series is one of my all time favorites, and I was so happy when I saw From make it's big comeback with the souls series. It would be nice if a modernized version of this game was made and you could bet money that I would be there playing if it ever happened. Thanks for making this video.

having played King's Field 4 shortly after the initial DaS2 release, going back to Dark Souls 2, it's incredible how hard a KF4 vibe i get from it, and not just because it looks like a PS2 game- there's a lot of straight up KF references and references to KF lore in DaS2, more than 1 or Demon's. And the DLC even moreso. the moment I saw Shulva the first time, and then played it, with it's wonderful verticality, i immediately thought of the Ancient City's tower. Fume Knight's armor is straight up a king's field piece. Playing Ancient City, tldr, made me appreciate Dark Souls 2 a bit more. not that i didn't already like it despite it's problems

the first thing that I noticed about this, is how much the artstyle of dark souls 2 specifically matches it. I don't get a dark souls 1 or 3 vibe from it at all(other than the serpent men). I can see a slight resemblance to demon souls, but for the most part... dark souls 2. Just look at the snake boss in this video, and then look at Mytha. Sure they have different heads, but the size, shape, and even texture is incredibly similar. the strange long hallway near the start of the video, looks almost exactly like the one in undead crypt. The start of the DLC's even have those strange parallel statues at around 7:16. Its honestly a bit uncanny how much is referenced in ds2 specifically, compared to 1 or 3. Hell, the "underground tower" at 8:20 looks like the area just before the first boss in sunken city.
