Sorry Doug! Your comments about Citroen are quirky. The CX was ahead of its time and so are many French cars that opened new frontiers in the automotive industry besides the hydrolastic suspension. Front drive was also a major advance, as the four wheel independent suspension massively applied in France since 2CV. At the time CX was perhaps the safest car on the road. Citroen went bankrupt not because of luck of innovations but because exploring new possibilities and experimenting is so expensive. Please watch the "Citroen XM story" and see what went wrong with this car.

The outer driver-side door handle orientation isn't super weird for the 80s. The bullnose F-150 had it the same way, just not with a super-flush button that matched the handle.

These Citroen cars were used by movie industry in Czechoslovakia to shoot riding scenes thanks to its greatest hydro pneumatic suspension that these cars have. Cameraman love them. Nowadays cinematographer have gyroscopes that minimizes any shaking.

Citroen was sold in Canada at a much higher quantity than in the US. I'd think you could get parts there, possibly. Easier than having to have parts shipped all the way from Europe, at least. But, yeah, getting parts is definitely more difficult than for most other old cars, I'm sure.

My dad had a CX estate (wagon) and it was the smoothest car I've ever rode in. Coin holder - many toll roads in France. Saves trying to empty your pockets all the time at the toll booths. Self centering steering - designed to drive at high speeds with the least amount of stress. High beam and horn on the opposite ends of the controls allowed my dad to use horn and headlights at the same time, in emergency situations, while still holding the steering wheel with both hands. Safer. We could load up the back of the car and tow a caravan and the car would remain level, and therefore more stable and safer. Amazing vehicle.

For the French these cars are nothing extraordinary, they were common at the time. In terms of manufacture, the best French cars are Peugeot, followed by Citroëns and finally Renault, the biggest problem that we encounter on our cars is rust, then, especially for Renault, plastic everywhere and low quality Manufacturing. If you want a nice French car, buy the very high end models, but they are very expensive.

Quirky and weird is the most I can gather from this video - but the weirdness here is, that this is a very American centric viewpoint. These cars were common on European streets, and not only in France. Yes, Citroen was different and that was their selling point. But at the time it was a sophisticated car that would compete with Mercedes and BMW on their own terrain. Nice one!

Reason for the concave rear windshield shape: driving aerodynamics and also: cleaning of water (rain) by aerodynamics. That‘s why you don‘t find a rear windscreen wiper on the CX. Same for all big Citroen: CX, XM, C6. I owned several of each model from the 80s until today. Nowadays I still drive a CX 2000 Pallas (1979) and a C6 V6 HDI Diesel Exclusive (2007), beside my Mustang Bullitt from 2019. All mentioned Citroën were successors of the legendary Citroën DS. Instead of quirky and weird I would call them amazing and with a lot of character and unrivaled driving comfort. Also the CX was a millionseller in Europe. Designwise the CX (created by Robert Opron and team) was also a Highlight in car design in 1974, when it appeared on the market. It won several design awards in Europe. You really missed something in the US 😅.

I also find it weird that the light switch in the older American cars from the 1960s,1970s, 1980s and 1990s is the same for both the headlights and interior light where you pull the knob to turn on the headlights and push the knob to turn off the headlights and turn the knob to the right to turn on the interior light and turn the knob to the left to turn off the interior light.

The thing with the concave rear window is that Citroen noticed that the airflow channels in a way that the rear window was rarely dirty. Notice there is no rear wiper. It probably also gave some aerodynamic look back then. As a part of a design, the idea was used in some other successors, like C5 and C6. Also i.e. 2016 Toyota Prius had a slightly concave rear window that channels air over the spoiler.

This video brings back great memories. My late father had numerous Citroen CXs (CX 2500) back in the 80s. I loved the cars and learnt to drive on them. The suspension (quality of ride), steering and total power brakes were simply exceptional for the time period. I believe from memory the centre reading light in the roof actually moves from the centre position both left and right (passenger or driver position) to switch it on and is basically a map reading light which was required before the age of gps! Thanks for the review, really fantastic to remember the car again. My late father bought all automatic gearbox versions, and I so remember wishing he would buy the CX 25GTI Turbo which was a turbocharged manual version with the “T” etched into the alloy wheels. Thanks for review of the car.

Dear Doug, to be honest this is the first time I have commented on a video on YouTube. To sum it up: - I have never heard the term "wired" as often as in this review. - How many times are you going to mock the 170 horsepower performance? - Especially since the maximum allowed on highways in America is 80 mph anyway. => So why do I need more than 170 hp in America? - My husband's Fiat Panda (built 1986) had 45 hp and went 88 mph. => Fast enough to get thrown in jail in the USA! So Doug, please be objective! The "CX" is 35 years old and was "state of the art" at the time. And please don't compare it with American "muscels cars". This was never the claim of Citroën. Greetings from Germany, where you are "still" allowed to drive "what goes": - 152 mph with my Kawasaki ZXR750 (built in 1990). - My Citroën C5 III Tourer (built in 2008) easily manages over 125 mph. - If I want to travel comfortably and relaxed at 200 mph, I take the ICE or the TGV. Carsten

I had a couple of Citroen Xantias, the Spiritual successor to the CX and I'll never forget my suspension "Eureka" moment when my local supermarket carpark flooded. There were dead Volkswagens and Fords everywhere from water ingress - it was carnage! I pulled up to the start of the flood, raised the suspension up to the top, then carefully (you weren't supposed to drive far on the highest setting) drove (sailed?) through the floods and into my parking space near the supermarket, no wading required, and lots of envious stares in our direction. It worked in the other direction too, as the car would hunker down when at motorway speeds, to be more aerodynamic as well.
