The Citroën XM Story

    Big CarBig Car

The Citroën XM wasn’t the first large Citroën and it wasn’t the last. It was widely praised, but largely ignored when it was sold. Over 20 years after production ended it’s becoming a collectable classic, like the Citroën SM before it. Any why not? If you’re going to drive a classic car, make it a stylish, luxurious, quirky ride that looks like something out of a 1980’s sci-fi movie.

Intro music: "Dm 80s" by Big Car (and written in 1987, so it's period): soundcloud.com/bigcartv/dm-80s
Music at around 7 minutes: "Red Dead Masque" from the DE-film audio library.

Errata: The large bar in the chart should be "total worldwide" rather than "rest of the world" as it also included UK sales. The map showing the French design sites is majorly messed up!

@Nowind Correct. They killed the DNA of Citroen to save a few Euro's. No soul, no foresight. I have had three Citroens, superb comfort. I tried a BMW 5 Series, it felt like the suspension was made of rocks.

The squared boxy shape prevented the success. In France back in time it was a popular car like the CX but off from french the others made the better marketing even their cars where not better or more advanced then the XM. When the reputation is ruined you can build as good as you want.

Doug DeMuro's CX review brought me here... But Sir, I feel obliged to ask you to get your facts right. The XM, along with the very pretty Alfa Romeo 164, was the fastest car in its class, from the day it was introduced. It was also by far the best handling car in its class, with very little lean in sport mode, so much so that Tiff Needell likened it to a Lotus, on old Top Gear. In group tests, it was always ranked very near the top. Poor build quality, bad reliability and badge snobbery sadly prevented it from being a success.

I very much like the big Citroens too. The only thing I do not like is that they really , I mean really look old when they get older. Paint, plastic body parts fading in color etc. Also, interior the same. Under the hood also the same. Somebody on a french forum made such a comment one day: " i bought an old XM and under the hood, unbelievably everything and all joints were dry , you would say it's a Golf!" If they had toyota , mazda realiability and longevity , these would be my absolute dream daily driver!

Nice video and a big BRAVO for the effort, but there is much wrong with the facts... 1. The ride HEIGHT is not the way to change the firmness, nor should it be messed with at highway speeds. 2. The Peugeot 205 NEVER had a 2.0l engine. 3. The Citroën BX NEVER had a 2.1l engine.

Lack of sportiness nothing to do with it's failure - since when have Citroens (esp. the big saloons) been sporty? As I recall, generally the Granada Scorpio, Renault 25, etc. were already fighting a losing battle against the Germans which was compounded a specific problem: the XM was too conventional for purists yet still regarded as weird by the market. For some reason the French had invested a huge amount of national pride in remaining in the executive segment Didn't help that it wasn't a looker either, which at the time I lived with but never loved. Not their worst effort, but nowhere near Citroen or Bertones' best either: even if you disregard that fussy 90s crease as of it's time, it's tiny face is too small for its sizeable arse ...but you can't see any of that from inside: other than an Avantime, never been in such a bright airy cabin - as much due to low beltline as glass area, meant the black leather felt luxurious not sombre. Passengers loved it, as well as the quality of ride. Interior set the scene for the sense of theatre: seeing the anhedral tips of the wing in the rear view mirror as the hydraulics charged made me feel like I was in the automotive incarnation of the Battlehawk - all I needed was a bank of toggle switches overhead... Don't remember performance being an issue, but my previous *4* cars had been 2CVs (from one extreme...), so what do I know? It was capable of swift progress, ably abetted by the suspension: my little brother was gobsmacked at how much speed (& how serenely) I was able to take through roundabout at the edge of our village: apparently much more that the Sierra 2.0i S he was charging around the countryside in at the time Suspension also responsible for a major 'quirk': never driven anything with four wheels before or since that requires such different treatment dry & wet. In the dry it floats with little roll (see it almost keeping up with Elan in a slalom HERE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQrGcIQKMvs ) but trick suspension can't f!!k with physics: after a downpour on greasy roads, it *utterly* failed to negotiate a sharp corner (I _wish_ it had qualified as understeer). Thankfully I had an empty pub car park as run off; lesson learned, never made that mistake again. (The other quirk was the _massive_ fuel tank - not long after getting it, brimmed it in one hit: over £50 - 25 years ago! Didn't do that again either...) Handling have been to do with weight balance too: bought mine with blown engine and put a new one in (residuals had already taken a battering, salvage value even more so) and even though it was the turbo 2, it teetered on the forklift - with the forks hard up against front wheel - when we loaded it, so god knows what the 2.5D was like Kept it for a few years & if I hadn't moved to central London, don't know how long I would have kept it. Might be selective memory, but having replaced engine & hydraulics (there'd been a fire too) only remember one mechanical, caused by the fitter who checked my work: he overtightened - and fractured - the alternator mounting bracket which let go in the first months. Would I have one again? Not if I could track down a C6...

The design was never my favourite, but one night I was parked up in a French restage taking a break from a trans-European drive and I saw an XM come through weaving around the various parked cars, it stayed completely flat and smooth and seemed to corner simply by moving sideways like a dalek. Had one of these in the mid 1990s. Pro's- cavernous and luxurious: you could hold a dance in the back. The superb ride quality. Cons: coarse and unrefined 4 cyl engine. Handled like a rowing boat. Faults: had to replace a suspension sphere, and a speedometer cable - apparently a common issue. Would I buy another - if they made an electric one and sorted the handling, I'd buy one tomorrow.

I had a 1994 2.0i with only air-conditioning as an option. Bought it for about 700 euro, used it on a holiday roadtrip where it blew the front suspension hydraulics return on my last day. After I got that emergency fixed, it locked up the Aircon pump in the off position, so that was essentially a write-off. I sold it for scrap to a hobbyist after a few months, considering it was my second car at the time and I was still a student... That was one of my worst car decision in my life, and I regret it every now and then since it happened 9 years ago. Rest in peace. Maybe one day I'll find your brother to give some care in his old day.

My friend bought one V6 new. It broke down all the time. The ride was awful, you were constantly being thrown up and down at a rate of 4 times per second. The door corner hit him in the face / eye a few times cuz the doors closed on their own and the upper corner near your head was so sharp and angeled inwards. He had to put in a code every time he wanted to start the car and that was also broken so it was a lottary. The gas pedal had like 7 cm of travel so you would think it's fast (you think you are pushing the pedal a little but you were actually pushing it over 50%. All in all, horrible "car".

Peugeot and Citroën both suffer from being way underpowered. I do not understand why they never developed engines to compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. I think that was one of their main draw backs in appealing to Europeans as well as Americans. I had a 1983 Peugeot 505 for 11 years. The longest I've owned any car. It was solid as a rock, had good suspension and steering but at 70 mph its turbodiesel was all out.

No mention of the C5 as a successor to the XM, instead he jumps straight to the C6, which was really a more expensive car, not a mass market car. The C5 DID sell in similar numbers to the CX, over a million in its production life. I owned a C5, and while it had its weaknesses, it inherited all the improvements to the Hydractive system which were developed in the XM, and was half the price of the C6, so while it may have lacked some of the high-end features of that car, my 2003 C5 had all I wanted from a Citroen at the time when I owned it (2013 to 2019) at a time when the older Citroens would have been too unreliable.

I had to renew the engine camshafts myself.... and it was a hell of a mechanical nightmare. Can you imagine, water loop, air conditionning loop, suspension oil loop, diravi oil loop, petrol loop, ... so many tubings and connectors before accessing the mechanical parts. It was out of this world. Mercedes and Bentley paid royalties to use these suspensions.
