The Citroën CX Story

    Big CarBig Car

When I was small we went to a Citroën dealership to look at the CX and I was struck by just how odd-looking this French creation was. With the rear wheels half covered, my child’s brain wondered just how changing a flat tyre worked, and the car sat low like the suspension was broken or something. I poured over the brochure at home, and strange things like the linear speedometer dazzled my young mind, amazed by this crazy space-age creation from a far-off land. The CX was the last car produced by an independent Citroën. With the company going into meltdown during development it was starved of resources, but it’s another Citroën design classic that’s worth celebrating today.

I quite liked the later model with sharper lines, but Citroen has never really been a car I’d consider buying, more of an Audi msn tbh.

US regulations, what can you say? They force car makers to have to tweak or make major changes to cars for no obvious benefit and thus, there hasn’t ever really been much of a presence there from any of the French car makers. Just look at all the great hot hatches we had in Europe in the 80’s and 90’s, none of them could be bought in the US.

My favourite, well other than the SM. They come up for sale occasionally in my country for give-away prices and I've always been tempted, but PSA never brought any parts over and they certainly don't make them now so any little thing going wrong, which is inevitable for a car this age, would end up being a nightmare.

Hi. Great Citroen CX video. In the graphic where you mention the Peugeot 605 and Talbot Tagora the Peugeot (red or orange) is a 505, not a 605, and it was in fact the 505 which gave its rear axle to the Talbot Tagora. The Peugeot 604 was already in production at that time, and had been for a while and it used the 2664cc PRV V6 Douvrain engine. Yet another reason why the PSA range was too numerous and final investment on the doomed Tagora was very limited. It's possible you meant to say Peugeot 604, but the photo is anyway a 505. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Overflowed with character. Today's cars are so boring in comparison in their uniformity. Thank you Citroen of old. Gave me cherished memories.

I bought an early CX 2400, the carb version, as an old banger. It was left hand drive, and no MOT. I paid 30 pounds for it, which was about what you paid for a tankful of petrol for a family car at that time. I rate it as one of the two best cars I have ever owned. It took a family of 5 on a European holiday, including, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Lichstenstein. At other times I used it to tow my caravan in the UK. It truly was a fantastic car, and I loved all it's idiosynchrasies. The next owner exported it to Canada and used it there for some time.

The CX was a hit... not top ten, but in the charts at least..... the rotary engine bit is a red herring.... rotaries are inherently less efficient due to greater combustion chamber surface area than conventional piston engines..... I'm a big Citroen fan, I'm possibly alone in thinking the GSA was peak Citroen..... all the fun hydraulic stuff, but at a sensible price,,,,,,,

My uncle is a Citroen fanatic with several DS's and CX's when I was young. I could drive a late model year CX 2.5 GTI sometimes, and it was great. Much faster than my father's 1.4 BX... It's a shame that Citroen's design has become so bland (the C4 Cactus being a bit of positive exception). I'd love for them to do a CX-like or even BX-like design EV. And no, the e-C4 is not that. It looks too generic.

My dad liked the CX we had two of them bought used. Both later models with a diesel engine. Together he drove them for over 17 years. Robust engine but the body would rust through when you spit on it. We also had a trailer. We drove every summer to France, Italy or Spain. Three boys on the backseat, paying one cassette "he man masters of the universe" nonstop for 14 hours. :-) I was with him when we drove the second CX to the junkyard. The motor died with a bang on the driveway to the junkyard. :-)

"...for much of its life It was compromised on power and handling". This is simply not true! It´s bullshit from ignorant motoring journalists. It was a very well balanced car with superior road handling due to its weight distribution, front-wheel drive and the hydropneumatic suspension, which gave unrivaled safety, road holding and comfort.

In 1955 they had crumple zones , ABS brakes via an analog hydraulic computer that used the weight of the car to power the brakes equally to each tires patch pressure grip. Oh ,yeah, the front brakes were giant inboard disc brakes bolted to the transmission. When a wire inbeded in the disc touch the disc in comp!eyed a circuit to a light on your dash to change pads. You simply up the bonnet leaned in, unclip the pad and the light wire and slipped in your new pads. I N 1 9 friggin' 5 5 ! !

The CX slow???? What a load of BS! I had a 2000 Pallas 1984 for 13 years and never ever ran out of HP in normal traffic or on the highway. 105 HP was plenty to get ahead, even on LPG. Somehow these car journalists always need the top engine to be satisfied. Normal people who want a beautiful and exentric car are well happy with 105 HP. :) Of course, owning a 2500 turbo or TD would be fantastic but calling the others slow, nope. Best ride I ever had. Very happy with my current Xantia 1.8 16V that has the fantastic suspension again! 324.00 Km and goping strong. Citroen rocks!

The CX at its launch was already backwards from the DS. Such a mistake. Only the "Prestige" versions had an appeal: its first issue, the CX2200 Prestige was restituting the rear legroom of a DS21 with the same engine. No six cylinder, no semi-automatic transmission with a gear-selector near the steering-wheel as in a DS, no turning headlights as in a DS, ... the CX just matched the central-console fashion in those days that the DS did not have. Then two bigger disasters were to come with the BX then the XM... Citroën was gone.

Greatest car ever made was actually the Citroen DS. When I was a kid my buddy's uncle showed up one day with a DS and all the kids in the neighborhood ran over to check it out. We wanted a ride but had to settle for just sitting on the plush rear seat. None of us had ever seen such a creation as the DS as they were exceedingly rare in North America. Later I would travel to France and ride in one and go on to learn about how great this car really was and how important it was in automotive engineering. Great car, no doubt one of the greatest and in my books the greatest car ever devised!
