Google recruiters be like: Would you like to join our company? Candidate: Are you kidding me? I am joining tomorrow.. The struggles like selecting a right candidate using cognitive theory and all other techniques, well you have to select one out of 400 people.. the real question is what you do when you don't have that enough applications or you have to search for candidates for niche job profiles and your company is not google? Great talk. Makes sense, absolutely. I just wonder why so little research finds its way to us practitioners ... Then, I had wished to learn more about how they exactly do it at Google (how do you get the right requirements, how do you measure cognitive ability (I'd suggest IQ tests, not questions) etc. etc.). If you google you'll find many sets of questions they ask and quite a few are not like he said (but which he also admitted). Even if insightful, nothing really new and staying on the surface. Dive deeper!

This emphasis on "structured" interviews has never made sense to me. People bring different experiences to the interview and you need to adapt your questions to fit the person. If I volunteered as an emergency technician - you can learn a lot about me (my character, values, etc...) from those experiences. Yes, 50% should be structured - but, the best part of an interview is the "authentic conversations" that reflect my true character. Great interviews know how to engage candidates in authentic conversations.

This talk suggests: > Never compromise on quality (it will kill culture and drive away the best) > Use science, structured interviews (to kill bias) > Give them a (bigger) reason to join (meaning) my further notes: 1) set a high standard (don't compromise, stay the course) 2) remove hiring managers from the hiring decisions (eliminate critical bias) 3) Use Assessment (Interviews aren't reliable ) 4) Job criteria: Cognitive Ability (problem solver, curious) , Leadership, Culture Fit, Role-related knowledge (a little confusing because he said "interviews are unreliable") 5) Structured interviews (same for everyone) -- hypotheticals/situational & behavioral 6) How you can Convince them to join: comes down to MEANING in Life (then the sales pitch for Google started and they almost lost me) 7) Find out how to meet your target market and creatively (around 28:00) --> 1/3 see it as a calling

You say "never compromise on quality" - but that can be a relative statement because if you have a certain company culture which attracts certain people who think a certain way, then once a company is saturated with people of that profile then you will end up with people who think the same and little variety in the way decisions are made. For example:  If your company has been hiring people of a certain ethnic background and they happen to like apples then soon (in a company there has to be hiring consensus) then you end up with a company that has predominantly people of a certain ethnic background who like apples. . . and very few people who look different and like strawberries.

As for your bias study, they had to send twice as many resumes for the "stereotypical African American names" because they are much more likely to sue a company for bogus affirmative action claims. They always try to prove "racism" with out saying why. These are facts, companies are afraid to hire "stereotypical African American names" because it's hazardous; many companies even have special financial accounts to pay the ones that make the bogus claims. Bullshit call one. This dip shit says to not compromise quality by taking power away from managers, yet his pig pong table example shows they did just that. So what the fuck are you saying? Google is an incredibly sought out employer, and flush with cash.  Getting excellent people to work there is not a difficult task.  You might have to compete a *bit* with a few other elite companies, but only a few (and please note that Google's reaction to such competition was a secret and illegal conspiracy to not hire people).
