The Battle of Midway 1942: Told from the Japanese Perspective (1/2)

    (Animated Battle Map)
This is part one of a planned two-part video covering Operation MI. As you can see I spent a considerable amount of time covering Nagumo’s Dilemma. To me it's one of most striking examples of how tough it can be for a commander to make a decision based on the information at hand. I found that to be the most interesting aspect of the battle.

    Corrections:
"Strength" , "Auxiliary", and "unknown" are misspelled in the video.
At 22:55 I should have stated “North of Midway” instead of Northeast of Midway. The illustration shows a 10 degree 240 nm from midway location. Not so Northeast as I audibly stated.
At 23:43 I should have stated 79 aircraft instead of 78 and I should have displayed 35 instead of 34 torpedo bombers. the “mistake” came about because sources still differ on whether there were 27 or 26 Carrier attack planes (Kates). If it was 27 it would have been 79 Planes. if it was 26 it would have been 78. During the recording I somehow mixed up the numbers.
    Additional Notes:
notice that the carriers started off the battle in a box formation. This provided further mutual support for their rather weak AA fire. however, due to the incessant air attacks from VT-8, VT-6 and VT-3, the carriers were never able to reform in a box formation, instead they were in a ragged line which further worsened their AA capabilities.
    -----------------------------------------Spoiler Below regarding Nagumo's Dilemma---------------------------------------------
So what was the answer to Nagumo’s Dilemma?
“Taking all together, and admittedly operating with the benefit of hindsight, the “right” answer to Nagumo’s conundrum probably should have emphasized maneuver, offensive speed in preference to mass, and passive damage control. With fifteen minutes in which to act, he didn’t really have time to implement anything terribly fancy. But he could have helped himself immensely by immediately spotting every strike airplane in his hangars, whether they were armed or not, and launching them at the Americans. The sixty-four armed aircraft he had in had were perfectly capable of doing enormous damage to his enemy. And by emptying his hangars, he removed the single greatest danger to his carriers --- the presence of fueled and armed aircraft within them.”

Japanese pilots we sank midway destroyed the America fleet off of midway and have total complete control of pearl harbor. Now we have to tell the people of Japan the truth we lost 4 carriers a cruiser and 260 aircraft and there crew members.

The Japanese was very skilled with their evasive actions and their pilots were the best but that one moment of the planes being distracted was just devastating

his point made at the 19-20 minute mark... "the fault in the whole Midway plan, there simply were not enough planes to do the dual mission." BINGO The Japanese drew up the plan for a six carrier kido butai.... and then tried to execute that plan with a four carrier kido butai. At the very least, they should have brought the Zuikaku and also cancelled the Aleutian island diversion and brought to Midway the light carriers diverted to that attack to make up for not having the Shokaku... then they would have had an operational force equal to the needs of the plan. Had they done that much, the plan might have worked. If the Japanese had not been short on planes, they would have sent out full searches from the gitgo, they had just learned that lesson at Coral Sea. Nagumo did the best he could with the cards he was dealt, the fault for the Japanese failure at Midway ultimately lies with Yamamoto for not bringing the full strength of carriers needed to carry out the plan at Midway.

To the clueless people agreeing that Jap pilots were the best in the world, More like the worst. They were referred to as Kamikaze.. 3800 died. That doesn't sound like pilots to me....

Thank you for your great video. Isn't there here a total loss from Japanses side of the target of the battle ? I mean, you explaine that attacking midway was just a pretext to attract the US carrier. Once They know that there are carrier and their approx position, why is there a dilmemna with attacking Midway ?

Mmmh. Given the information we have, the prudent choice would have been to shift south, closing on Midway and the crappy pilots they had there, force the _best pilots in the Navy if not the world_ to land in a crossbreeze, re-arm, refuel, and relaunch for the restrike on Midway. Once the airfield is out of the fight, you can deal with the USN fleet, who you've now forced to chase you. Maintain the initiative! As you say, sometimes you just have plain old bad luck. As someone who has bad luck non-stop, lemme just say, sometimes you can avoid bad luck by removing chance from the equation.

Americans here use the same tactic that the Russians used in WWII. If there is a machine gunner, throw enough unskilled soldiers at it to create a mountain of bodies, then eventually you can get to the gunner and hit him in the head with a vodka bottle.

History shows Nagumo's decision led to their defeat, they waited to recover Tomonaga's planes. So, attacking now is a better choice until it's done and over with. All they can expect would be a larger loss, an even loss, or a total loss. A win would be a long shot.

Great video. Love the visuals and detailed timetable. Superb ! Didn't realize there was a second part on the way so I was puzzled by the abrupt ending. The movie was lame as expected. Who said yeah let's get this lame director to make a movie about one of USA's most pivotal battle of WW2. Mind numbing.

Hey man I know I am nit picking here, but when you say 0800 or 0600, the first "0" should be pronounced as "zero" not "O". And incase you need to say 0000 it's is referred to as zero hundred hours or simply as midnight. 0030 is called zero dark thirty. Otherwise great video. Loved it.
