I like the idea of an electric sailboat (in fact I was talking about it a few weeks ago), but the 'green' agenda has zero value to me. The value comes from: 1. Extending your range if you're out of diesel 2. Recharge from solar to preserve diesel for emergencies 3. Redundant propulsion system 4. Presumably less maintenance/less hours on the diesel Et cetera. I think electric should be combined with diesel, for the best value. Perhaps a diesel motor that can belt drive a generator if necessary. I want increased redundancy/range/ease of maintenance. So this thing has real value, but the salesman if focusing on fantasy horseshit.

I am no tree hugger, but I like the idea of not being dependent on the infrastructure. So it begs the question: Why are you cooking with propane and not induction? Also; twin helms, twin props; why not twin rudders?

Vor 5 Tage

Induction would be an owners choice. And single rudders are better. Twin just complicate things.

Add a generator amd a decemt sized tank for backup, and add some personality to the cabin design then it would be the perfect boat.

Sounds like great upgrades for a future owner who want to live on-board full time. But not everyone wants a setup like that. Which is why this boat doesn’t have it.

Its simply greenswashing bullshit to market this as a great thing for the environment. I mean yeah, you probably saved 200 liters of diesel per year, but then again its a fiberglass boat that practically cant be recycled and will end up on the ocean floor or in a landfill. If this was about anything else than the ease of use electric systems bring to the table, they would be selling aluminium or wooden yachts.

Dedicated nav stations are like 8 track tapes, thing of the past. Ipads and computers can do all the navigation. I still like paper charts but computers are taking over. Just because it is electric does not mean it does anything more for the environment. Where do all those batteries go when they can't be charged anymore ? Right to a landfill with all their toxic properties.

Hi Guys. I like the idea of "all electric". But what happens if you are at anchor for a week and reliant on battery power only ? How long will the batteries power up the boat equipment ?

Vor 21 Tag
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma

You could comfortably stay on anchor for about 7-10 days on just the batteries alone. But if a future owner is looking for a livaboard, then definitely some solar would be spec’d in the build. 500-1000W would be plenty.

To answer the question whether the hydro regeneration effects boat speed at 8-9 knots... Drag due to wave making and boat motions is way more than that of the propellers, when you are traveling at or near hull speed.

Vor 6 Tage
andy schuster
andy schuster

What is the minimum boat speed for hydo regeneration? For example if I'm on a mooring, with a 1 knot tidal current, will the system recharge the batteries? For example, I sail the boat over the weekend and then tie up to a permanent mooring in a tidal estuary, will the battery recharge? Or I go sailing in light air area at less than 4 knots (chesapeak bay or long island sound) in the summer, will the batteries be recharged.

Jason and Nikki have a genset and two diesel motors. Plus a lot more solar than you can fit on a monohull. It’s definitely possible. There are other electric boats out there doing it too. But that is up to an owner to spec when their boat is being built. This is a show boat. It has no owner. So it’s a blank slate and only has the minimum. This video is actually good proof why the Salona has a gas stove. We love The Wynns so this isn’t a comment against them, just realize that they have the same amount of lithium batteries as we do, accept we need them for our motor and they only use them for house loads. When they need to motor they can use their diesels. They also have 5X more solar and are in the tropics. We have an alcohol stove and a wood stove for a reason. Our 400W of solar isn’t enough for induction and Air con. You could probably fit 1kW of solar on the Salona of you we’re really clever, but that would be barely enough to ditch the gas stove and heat. The regen would help a bit, but we recommend enough solar to run your house loads AND enough wind. Then the regen is for the motors. You’ll get 2 out of three and never at full capacity so it will average out to enough over time. But that is only of a future owner wants to live full time off grid. Most folks don’t. They just have a boat for weekends or races and don’t need 1000W of solar or care too much about cooking.

Nice, and I see a lot of benefits. But what I did expect, was cooking electric too (induction). One of the troubles getting everywhere is, that the connection for gasbottles in many countries are different. In that case you are only using electric and thus more independent. For the rest, I loved it.

Salonas are very easy to sail and perform very well. It's nice to see electric propulsion in one. However from my experience the boom is really long and the sail goes almost to the end of the stern and you would really need to have quite the overhang if you wanted to fit any solar on the back.

Vor Monat

Had never heard of the brand before so mission accomplished! I've been skeptical of electric but a purpose built boat with tons of regenerative capacity and huge battery banks definitely changes the game a bit. Twin engines is a nice benefit too...maybe the scales are tipping.

😍🎉🔜➡️➡️ Hi guys, love your vlogs. Dont comment much but this was a great one(like all the others) but I had a question. We are a family of 4 humans and 2 fur babies so we are looking at catamarans for size, comfort and space. Do you think it’s possible to retrofit a cat to electric? New ones are waaaaaay above our pay grade.

Vor Monat
Sailing Uma
Sailing Uma

yes BUT it very much depends 100% on the sailboat itself (monohull or catamaran) You can technically put an electric motor on any boat, but the higher the performance, the better it would work because the less you would need to use the motor. Most sailboats just don't perform well enough to compliment just having an electric motor, in which case a hybrid is a more viable option.

Now then two things that would make this a great sailing boat are; Double rudder system and a variable depth keel for those shallow waters. So that the draft could be between 0.85m and 2.45m, just a thought??

Vor Monat

Then the boat would loose all it's sailing performance. A deep bulb keel and a large single rudder are one of the reasons she points so well in very light and heavy wind.
