Alee, thanks for the great videos and the excellently made touring bicycle buyers guide which I'm reading now! One question though: you hardly give any visibility to VSF Fahradmanufaktur, although the T-900 also uses Rohloff (and other great specs) and the whole TX series is well-liked by serious travellers. Any reason for this? I don't own one (yet) but was wondering what you thought of the brand and the T-900 in particular. Thanks!

Vor 2 Monate
Pascal Mathieu
Pascal Mathieu

@CYCLINGABOUT Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer, Alee. Tyre clearance is not a problem because my off-road experience is far less muddy than yours. I do use kevlar, though. Stack measurements worry me a bit more, I guess I'll just have to try the T-900 to figure it out. Right now, I'm using a Trek T-300. It's a very modest (and cheaper) bike but it does the trick because I don't carry more than 10-15 kg loads at a time. Stack measurements suit me, particularly because I have bullhorn handlebars that I placed in a way that suits me perfectly and offers many positions to avoid back pain. Perhaps bullhorn or butterfly handelbars on the VSF T-900 might compensate the low stack measurements (?). One thing is sure: I'm ready to splurge a little more to buy a sturdier bike for longer trips with heavier loads. And I do love the look of the VSF line. Thanks again!

Vor 2 Monate
CYCLINGABOUT
CYCLINGABOUT

One more thing, the frame "stack" measurements are pretty low on VSF bikes compared to other brands. Depending on your body proportions, flexibility and core strength, you might find the bars a bit low. 👍🏻

Vor 2 Monate
CYCLINGABOUT
CYCLINGABOUT

The T-900 is great! Rohloff bikes are normally a bit too expensive to make it onto my "best bike" lists, as value-for-performance is always a factor. Perhaps I'll put together a Rohloff-specific list at some point... Some places where the T-900 loses points compared to other bikes - tyre clearance is pretty narrow for a heavily-laden bike, and it's only available in three sizes. If the tyre width and sizing works for you, it's a great bike for the price.

My wife and I have toured the world (from Japan to Cuba, Norway, Portugal, ...) using two KOGA WorldTravellers. I think the key for touring is NOT weight: the bike must be strong and stiff to carry the full load safely. Our bikes are 17 kg. I agree one must be ready to spend some money: cheaper is not better. I agree that very short gears are necessary, as we will carry load, climb, and get tired at the end of the day, when the stop is still 20 km away. Mudguards may not sound sexy but are very useful. We had a 2 weeks holiday in Norway with a couple of sunny spells only.....those mudguards helped keep the bike and us cleaner, and the chain and gears thanked me! Schwalbe Marathon 37 mm are perfect in my opinion. Hydraulic brakes are overrated. We came down in the rain from Norwegian passes with mechanically operated V brakes: we had a lot of braking power! Besides, hydraulics are more susceptible to failure/ malfunctions. The side stands is undoubtedly useful, but comes at a price: weight. Ortlieb bags are the way to go.Of course one must learn the art of taking only what one REALLY needs. Happy cycling to all!

The problem is that top-tier touring bikes become a bit homogenous to compare! They all inevitably end up with the same components and they have very similar frame geometries and features too. The only way I could fairly compare them is if I had a fleet of bikes in size XL, and I could load them with my gear and go on a trip with varied terrain to understand the ride 'feel' and handling characteristics. Perhaps, I could arrange this next time I'm in Europe...

If you can find a chromoly old school mountain bike, with rack mounte you have an ultimate touring bike. Takes wider tires , no toe overlap for city , can go on or off road, great gearing ,. Ps also Schwinn touring bikes made in Japan, Voyageur , Passage, that are made either with Columbus, Champion, or Tange tubed 80s ., provided no rust etc, ..I have them and have a Trek 930, and Schwinn Passage. PS , trick is finding a barely used one..,, I seem to run across almost " new old stock "ones not used. I guess the savings go down if you can't repack all the bearings etc, but even then most bike shops can do for 120, and the bike ,, depends on seller, but sometimes they let them go for peanuts...

Within 2 minutes he hits the biggest problem with today's touring bikes . Gears that work for all those long hills , it is so much better to have a gear you can ride in than having a gear too low and the next too high. My slightly modified Bacchetta Giro A 20 touring recumbent is geared low 17"-96" and I run 153 mm crank arms .I would never consider going back to a normal diamond frame bike. The comfort levels on a bent are far superior to any diamond frame. No pain at the end of any day makes a tour so much better. As I can not stand up for the next 4-8 hours of riding, I just happen to be sitting in a really comfortable seat. There are drawbacks as I do not go on loose gravel , hop curbs or roots , but that is my choice as other bent users do not have the same limitations .. Price is comparable to a decent upright with the only difference in components being the seat and the handlebar riser. When your body hurts and you know that your bike fit is correct , it might be time to try something different.

No rear suspension? No suspension fork? Then I wouldn’t bother touring my own neighborhood let alone outside it. No company has any business selling a bike over $4k without a full suspension unless it’s for some athletic competition. In three years these will be like the early motorcycles they sold without front brakes (which incidentally provide 70% of stopping power), or the leaded gasoline cars used to use. Dinosaurus.

superb objective information on the bikes ..... BUT regarding "overgearing".......who are the dudes and dudettes who can pump a 20 inch lowest gear all day , with 15 to 20 plus kg of luggage on a 2000m climb??? young people?? olympians??? 15 inch lowest gear generated from a 36 tooth casette and custom 20 tooth chainring on 3X9 700c 35mm tyre set-up at cadence of 90 produces about 5.5km/hr, saves the aging legs, balance not a problem . Chain drive rohloff similarly customized down to 2.1 input ratio, and delaying 1.95 until age 70yrs. Maybe an article on drive-train modification

No Giant, no Merida? A review without the biggest manufacturers? On my point of view this is not meaningful.
