@Mihai Asandulesa ? I specifically said cars. Phones got rid of buttons to maximize screen size since space is so limited. Whereas almost all customer surveys and real world experience shows ppl in general hate haptic touch controls in cars. Or even worse, basic functions like heat and A/C being trapped inside menus that take multiple inputs to reach. Also physical buttons can be located without looking away from the road while driving, making haptic buttons more hazardous overall.

Yup, there have been several instances where the car cameras have caught burglars to your home or even people being assaulted so if you have an open garage it can be an additional security camera. There have been cases where the criminal parks his car within view of the camera and the license plate can be seen later.

Legacy carmakers have so many silod components, component designers/manufacturers and kind of have to go back to the drawing board to be able to integrate some or add certain types of functionality like this. Certainly in theory a very simple addition but in practice, unless you start over from scratch on all your A/V/tech for legacy car manufacturers it is much more complex than it was for Tesla.

I agree totally, it is such a fun car to drive and own. Concerning the fan speeds, I leave mine on auto 100% of the time which works great. Then I only have to adjust temperature usually by one degree. But it is so simple to give a verbal command of temperature 73 and it changes to 73. Also, I also cannot stand the turn signals and the horn “buttons”. Great review.

Marques, as someone who hasn't made the transition to EVs, it's fascinating to watch these deep dives on cars from a practical perspective of "would this be my daily driver?". I wonder if you would be willing to make a video that discusses how far car companies in the next few years are focused on improving EV car ranges/batteries? Even though most Americans travel
Vor 5 Monate
😍Tony ParaSocial +6
IMHO EVs already have enough range to fill these requirements/needs. You’re plugging up when you’re at home, giving essentially 80% range all the time. If you go further from home you’ll fast/super charge to come home or continue on. All of this is assuming you’ve decent charging infrastructure where you live too. If you don’t, then I could see why you’d want considerably more range.

@Brian Kim From my experience driving a long range model 3 across Europe with two adults, the car needs less and shorter stops to charge than the humans need to stretch their legs/visit the toilet/grab a bite to eat. My colleague drives a LR X with 3 younger kids and indicated he needs even more stops for kids, skewing the balance even more in favour for the car to not require you to stop separately for charging.

The other replies have covered most everything, but maybe it's worth stating the high level point simply. Yes, the battery tech will continue to improve. Buying an EV is exactly analogous to buying a new laptop: sure, if you wait until Apple's next product cycle, you'll get a better computer for the same price. That will always be a true statement, so at some point you just have to decide whether the current tech is enough to satisfy your needs. We've owned a Model S 75D since 2018 and it's great. Sure, I wish I had the better batteries from the new ones available now, but the 2018 tech works great for our use case.

Marques! Thank you for putting so much efffort into this.. Totally agree with the 360 camera omission. Had a test drive in a Model X last week and was astonished that something so fundamental was not present. Here in Europe towns have small streets, narrow traffic lanes, and totally miniscule car parking spaces given the size of modern cars. This is a basic must-have (especially for the front corners and wheel arch area) despite the seeming effectiveness of the proximity sensors, especially in a car as large as the Model X.

I have the Model 3 and this was very interesting to watch. My car still has the physical stalks for turn indicators and gear switching, along with a full circular steering wheel. I've never used a yoke steering wheel, so can't really compare the two, but it seems like you got used to it quickly and are loving it. Is it difficult to use the capacitive touch buttons on the yoke when you're making a turn? For example, if you're making a U-turn and see a driver in front of you doing something strange, is it easy to locate the honk button and use it? I feel like I wouldn't be able to do it under the stress of that situation because you're turning the yoke and your hands have moved all over it, so the orientation might get all screwed up...but curious if this also becomes a muscle memory thing.

Great video 👍🏼 What’s the range degradation like between 30k miles and 100k miles? That would typically be when I would own a car - like many people I buy secondhand at two to three years old and keep for about five years. How much do the batteries cost to replace? (presumably that would get you back to 100%, or are there other growing inefficiencies?).

Nice review. As a 2022 Plaid owner I have a lot of the same opinions. I too actually like the yoke and wouldn’t even select a normal wheel though it’s now an option. But I absolutely hate the buttons esp the turn signals and the horn which is ridiculously hard to use. The auto park feature is very flaky and rarely works and sometimes the console has connectivity issues. Driving it though is a pure rush and truly exhilarating though it is MASSIVELY underbraked. I wish the brake package was cheaper because you cannot help but drive spiritedly in this car.

Also, can see from your video that the door handle has scrapes, as does the middle console. This to me suggests scrapes occur with things that slide in and out, or back and forth. Poor fit? Those details would irritate me. Also, I love physical buttons. Been driving for over 40 years and have driven many different cars. When driving, real physical buttons are much easier to work with.

It would be nice to get more long term updates in the tech world. It is a bit more common with cars but there's very few I've seen on Teslas. I especially want to see long term tests on electric cars from people who aren't in the tech world, as in regular car reviewers. Absolutely right about the door handles reliability. On my 2014 P85D all 4 door handles have been repaired or replaced at one time or another, some of them repaired more than once. The latest revision 3 handle with magnetic sensors inplace of micro switchs resolved some of the reliability issues. But it’s still a moving part with motor, and gear and also wires that flex so something is still going to break at some point. And also agree about the cheap build quality, especially the interior. My less than $30K 2013 Leaf has a heated steering wheel and mirror, why is the ~$130K 2014 Tesla does not. Heated steering wheel was not added to Model S not until 2016 and only come with optional cold weather package. But damn that drive train, battery range, software update and SuperCharger network is what got me to stick with Tesla. Hope as they get more mature on building cars the build quality can match the price they are charging.

Tesla seems to do the software right, but the hardware kinda suffers. I would also prefer physical buttons significantly more over capacitive buttons. I like the concept of the yoke not blocking the dashboard so you can see things better at a glance, that's muscle memory I'd be fine with learning, but having no physical buttons or options to reach over without looking to change simple things I would imagine being frustrating. I don't like the models that only have screens. I love the yolk. Probably the biggest thing for me. Reminds me of Knight Rider. I'm in New Zealand and I am seeing more Teslas here, as time passes. Vor 4 Monate
Justyburger +1
@Chief Lunar I don't believe it is ignorant. I think you need to study it further, because when you factor in the mining for Lithium, Cobalt and other materials, as well as sources of energy needed to power the grid, they are not exactly "green'. They do obviously produce little or no pollution in the city they are being used in and also lower noise pollution, but overall, taking a birdseye view, they are not a true solution. Not yet anyway. I am interested in the new Salt based battery technology. I'm also interested in Hydrogen. I also think this "war" on the petrol car is over the top, because most petrol cars are very efficient these days. It is also easier to recycle a petrol car, than an EV, because a whole chemical process is needed to recycle the batteries when they eventually decay. I'm not against EV's either. I simply like to weight up the pros and cons. If I had a large solar array (at least 10KW) and the prices came down a bit, I would buy and EV for city driving. I also think nuclear power is the grid solution for a world of EV's, but it is highly debatable whether enough Lithim and Cobalt actually exists in the ground, to produce a world of EV's. I'd guess that the powers that be know this and that's why we are seeing more and more controls against travel. The WEF want 15 min cities. No more freedom of the automobile. Believe me, I want a technological and bright future, but I am not sure we are going to get it. We have psychopathic maniacs in Davos right now, planning the further enslavement of humanity.

Regarding the range discrepancy you're seeing, I noticed your Instrument Cluster shows the 19" Tempest Wheels, which is a 396 Mile EPA Rated Range for the Plaid, but your current car has the 21" Arachnid Wheels equipped. Tesla advertises those with a 348 Mile EPA Rated Range. You can change your car’s configuration to match your actual wheel setup under Settings > Wheel and Tire Settings > 21" Arachnid Wheels. This will update your car’s wheels on the instrument cluster and phone app as well. If you’re getting > 348 miles, you’re beating EPA rated range! Also, if you have factory 21’s, you have Summer Tires. You don’t want to use those under 40 degrees. You’ll want to switch out for an All Season or Winter tire. Running summer tires below 40 degrees can cause compound cracking, and they’re significantly worse in ice / snow.

The funniest part is that buttons to adjust the fan controls just got added back today after they were replaced with the slider last Christmas. I would still love a physical button to control the fan speed even though I can control it by voice (sometimes other people in the car are talking). And the main reason for me to not use auto mode is because the car blows heat right at your face and you can't override it (I prefer legs only for heat). They also added Steam (S and X only) with the recent upgrade, so you can now possibly play those other games you mentioned.

Thanks, really helpfull. Driving a M3P and considering adding this to the garage. May I ask two questions: 1. Does the car has a similar alarm when crossing a line on the road, chiming like this is your final hour? (Sometimes even with a turninglight on ?!) 2.does it also treat you like a baby as well by switching off the AP when you haven’t responded promply three times to the ‘hands on the wheel’ call? Thx and keep up the good work. Best from the NL

Drives me crazy how the S has the cars driving around you in front of you on the small screen instead of on the large screen like the Model Y has on it. Nice review... After test driving 2023 S (no plaid test drive), I fully agree with you on turn signal capacitive buttons (and horn, etc..), just ordered an S Plaid but with ROUND steering wheel... Because, while I can see you have *learned* to use something no one should have to as we all know how to use round steering wheels, in some of your footage 18:02 you are driving dangerously to do so (keeping hands in original position but completely crossed during exit turn... okay given you KNOW how far you have to turn but if a skid occurred or the curve sharpened your crossed arms would collide and you could go no further - not safe). Anyway I'm glad you've learned to live with the yoke and I agree it does look cooler and is fine on a straight road (if you don't have emergency maneuvers) but I only considered the Plaid now because of the availability of a round steering wheel. Also, FYI, I believe now that brake kit and software update to connect the dots is available I've read the car has done 217... Agree with you it may not matter but they promoted the car as 200 mph and it should have been capable under some scenario sooner.

Image wanting the fingerprint button back on your iPhone 🤣 I’m surprised he didn’t even mention one of the coolest features of Tesla’s… you can press the right scroll wheel and tell the microphone virtually anything you want, and it even learns and gets smarter over time. For example, in this video he complains about changing the fan speed or A/C temperature while driving. You can just press the button and say “set the temperature to 68 degrees” or “set fan speed to max” which is way more convenient and safer

I used to be, but right now I drive a 2019 Audi e-tron after a 6 month stint with a Tesla Model Y, which I loved until it started phantom braking 2-3 times per 20 minutes on highways. It became very dangerous, and Tesla service would only see me 3 months after I reported it. I like some aspects of Teslas a lot. But others are deal breakers. The fact that Tesla does listen to their customers sometimes (see update to last Christmas UI change that buried the climate controls one level deeper and was later reverted back), but obstinately doesn’t at other times (see buttons in steering wheel of Model S and X instead of stalks), is a stubborn streak on dangerous items that will ensure I won’t ever buy one again (unless they change their approach dramatically.

I appreciate that you talked about the yoke. In concept, if no other things changed, I'm fine with a yoke. It would be weird to use for like a week, but I'd get used to it. 100% in the same boat with the damned capacitive buttons for all your critical features. Turn signals are a SAFETY FEATURE, and need to be reliable. Same with the horn Wipers and lights? Fine, make them "usually" automatic, one less thing to fiddle with when I need to. What about cases when, like in PA, you have to use headlights in work zones, when it rains, etc? Let's not forget that "automatic" != "reliable"
Vor 5 Monate
West Coast Wheelman +5
I think they missed the point of the yoke by not tightening the ratio down to one turn lock to lock. Like the airplane controls that inspired it, the whole advantage of a yoke is never having to reposition your hands, which can only work if you limit travel to 180° in each direction. It's drive by wire electric steering so it would be trivial to implement with a speed sensitive variable ratio, which would be a lot easier to get used to.
Vor 5 Monate
Mr. Everything +4
My main issue that I think I would have with the yoke is not being able to just let the wheel auto return to a straight position after turning. For example in any car right now when I take a turn I release pressure on the steering wheel and let it slide through my and and control the speed at which this happens by the amount of clamping pressure I keep on the wheel. You would not be able to do this at all with a yoke since the entire top half of the wheel is gone. I think it would be extremely annoying to always have to lift my hand over each other just to make a turn and is not something I can see myself ever getting used to purely because it's a less efficient way of driving to me.

@West Coast Wheelman I don’t think Tesla has steer by wire yet. I got confused and looked it up just now, I see a bunch of articles speculating Tesla will do that, and one Lexus production car that is going to have it. I personally think steer by wire is not a good idea, (break by wire too). There should be mechanical backups for safety critical systems.

The yoke steering wheel would work better if Elon made the ratio of turning radius with the wheel tighter. Full lock should only have you turn the yoke vertical. It may be a more sensitive steering and harder to get used to but Elon is reinventing everything, so maybe that would set the standard for future steering racks.

Some corrections to the video. Top speed is 175 in track mode(people have got it up to 218 mph by removing the limiter). You can control most things with the voice controls, so you are not required to take your eyes off the road to adjust things. If you want to do something on the screen, you can let auto-pilot take over... Legacy carmakers have so many silod components, component designers/manufacturers and kind of have to go back to the drawing board to be able to integrate some or add certain types of functionality like this. Vor 5 Monate😍Tony ParaSocial +6

How long does it take to get used to the fact that all the controls are done through the screen? I work at a car dealer and the 1st time I got in a Model 3 we have for sale it took me ages to find the screen to turn on the wipers, or adjust the mirrors.

@Brendan G I moved from a Subaru Crosstrek (first gen, so not much electronics) to a Model Y, and within at most 1 week everything was fine. I still wish for an easier way to change temps and fan speed, but that's all.

@Brendan G it's definitely strange at first, but if you're driving it pretty regularly, then it becomes second nature with a week or two. The first time you try do something (like putting it in neutral or trying to defrost the windshield), it can be an awkward process of fumbling through menus, but after that, you'll get it and know how to do it.

Great video! Have driven in some Teslas and completely agree with you that they feel cheap on the inside. As one friend said "it feels like a beta version".

That's the thing about new car and tech reviews. You really don't get to hear the bad unless it's glaringly obvious, nor do you get some of the intricacies of how things work. It would be nice to get more long term updates in the tech world. It is a bit more common with cars but there's very few I've seen on Teslas. I especially want to see long term tests on electric cars from people who aren't in the tech world, as in regular car reviewers. I think that would convert many that didn't care for electric cars to start.

I agree with you on how fun it is to drive. I have the 2022 Model S as my daily driver. To me the model S /plaid design is still the best looking EV on the market. Tesla did add Apple car play on the Christmas update which I truely appreciate. Self drriving is better but not there yet, very stressful to use due to ghost braking and some turns. Tesla does send over the air updates on regular basis to correct faults . For Road trips Tesla's charging infrastructure has the competition beat by far.

Stuff to get used to, I guess. Hopefully other manufacturers can improve their software to be just as nice in some cases!

Marques, thanks for the review. Spot on and agree with all of your points. I appreciate you bringing up the elements not delivered to date. Steam for the 2021, 200 mph, FSD, etc. Not sure why Tesla is perpetually in this "over promise, under deliver" mentality. If they never mentioned some of these things we would never care, like advanced gaming, but they instead under deliver when they could be "unknown" updates and create a fantastic owner experience. I still love the car and love the satin black wrap with camo touches.

Note that for the 3 you can get very good auto frunk opener kits so you can solve that quite easily. I opted for compressed gas pistons so the frunk on my 3 does open fully when unlocked but still requires manual closure. Marques, It would be interesting to see what its like to downgrade now to a mainstream car and to see how far they have come. We all know tesla has been ahead of the curve when it comes to self driving, software, etc, but since this is a car channel, it would be awesome to get your reviews on modern average joe cars capabilities. We all know they are reliable, drive well, get good gas mileage, etc etc. But I have had 2 cars as of late that have smartphone integration, the ability to use their apps and so on (One is an accord and one is a camry). Nice concise review. It's a bit out of my price range, but a nice looking car. The minimalism is ok with the other drivers console, rather than just the screen. I don't like the models that only have screens. I love the yolk. Probably the biggest thing for me. Reminds me of Knight Rider. I'm in New Zealand and I am seeing more Teslas here, as time passes. I'm actually a bit skeptical of EV.s as an actual green solution. They are not green and they are still very overpriced. That's why I drive a petrol car.
Vor 5 MonateChief Lunar
Sir, this is extremely ignorant. EV vehicles are certainly better for the environment opposed to ICE vehicles. However, I can agree with you on the pricing being unfortunate for most of the population.
Vor 4 MonateJustyburger +1
Vor 4 MonateSibobby1 +665

Two things I have learnt with Tesla coming into the market: 1. Humans get used to bad UI (Yoke, 0 buttons etc) and 2.

I own one. Agreed on the buttons on the wheel with the exception, I really like the turn signals. Interior build quality could be so much better!!!! 360 view would be amazing. Yoke is great!!!!! Driving experience is amazing. Wish I could get the brakes!!

I got the ev6 AWD and it is such a good package. Last week I drove 380 km with 5 degree Celsius weather. Yes it is an kia but they did an great job with it and with 7 year guarantee is just really good. Beside that it is different without being to different and it just makes alot of sense.
Vor 3 MonateRobin de Hood +6
The thing about buttons is that they add cost that can be avoided and somewhat limit what you can do with future software updates linked to those buttons.
Vor 5 MonateChief Lunar
I know, what a boomer. Buttons are old school.

Great review. Personally, the indicator buttons would be a complete deal breaker if I could afford this car. An indicator is just such a common thing to use, that I’d go nuts if it doesn’t work half the time. Obviously there are a lot of very nice things in this car. But to each their own.
Vor 5 Monatedefined photography +13
this and the lack of other physical controls would be a complete no go for me. that said, i'm not going to ever be able to afford one 😁

Vor 5 MonateTamir Orbach +6
@Pluto is a Planet no.
Vor 5 MonateYou can always use the speech feature to change the fan speed. I personally would hate it if there were real buttons just for climate.
Vor 5 MonateMechaneer
I agree on everything you said. The haptic turn signals are really dumb and the fact that they are glitchy and don't work a lot of the time just makes it worse. The haptic horn is even worse and an actual safety hazard. Really really dumb. I also agree the front trunk should be automatic as a standard feature for this price level. Automatic back seats would be nice too, but not as important as the aforementioned issues.
Vor 5 MonateSoftKleenex
The fan speed control slider was truly infuriating, good thing in the latest update you tap a button to control speed now instead of fiddling with a slider
Vor 5 MonatePéter Friedrich
Do people fiddle that much with the fan speed though?
Vor 5 MonateNulight
One of your complaints about fan speed specifically: just put it on Auto. I always have mine on Auto and it just regulates the temperature. So unless you want to move the airflow, or change the temp itself, the rest is done for you.

Vor 5 MonateErnest Z
So yeah I am not spending that kinda money on a car. But… a lot of what you said about the S applies to my “poor man’s Tesla” as well. Tech, responsiveness, software, updates, Supercharger network, responsiveness (ok, not the accel specs), and overall ease of use and ownership… my 2021 Model 3 SR+ has those features. At less than ⅓ the price. If I was in the market for a replacement EV today (and I know oh so much more about EVs now than 2 years ago!), it’d be a no brainer: Tesla. Great review! You got all the plusses and minuses.

Vor 5 MonateWhoAmEye_WhoAreEwe +5
Surely, in this day and age [Apple, John Deere, etc..are all going down the same route] and being able to 'tune' would be restricted/forbidden....given that it's software and not mechanical that you are dealing with. (?) Admittedly 'mapping' is software tuning. Don't hate....the noob(me).
Vor 5 MonateJohn Regular +10
Unfotunately, interfering with the car this way would probably void the warranty, but in Teslas case it might be even worse, since the car can be banned from the supercharger network or something.
Vor 5 MonateItuhata +5
heck from what I heard about Tesla actively detuning cars unless you pay, I have no doubt aftermarket or software tampering would void the warranty.
Vor 5 Monatephil phil +1
As far as HVAC controls go: personally I almost never touch them. Instead, I use the voice response and tell Tessie what I want it to do. EG: "Set fan speed to 4" or "I'm, cold" or "I'm hot" or "Set Temperature to 74", etc. etc.

my dad has a 2020 model 3 and one of the things we got was "auto" opening hydraulics for the front and rear which Is really just a spring that creates enough force to open it when you open it which is nice, so it will auto open but, like you said it is not powered so you do still have to close it manually.

Vor 5 MonateWest Coast Wheelman +5
I think they missed the point of the yoke by not tightening the ratio down to one turn lock to lock. Like the airplane controls that inspired it, the whole advantage of a yoke is never having to reposition your hands, which can only work if you limit travel to 180° in each direction. It's drive by wire electric steering so it would be trivial to implement with a speed sensitive variable ratio, which would be a lot easier to get used to.
Vor 5 MonateMr.
Vor 5 MonatePenaPVP +1
I’d rather use =/=
Vor 5 MonatePenaPVP +1
@West Coast Wheelman that’s kinda why they do that in race cars too, you rarely see them turn the wheel past 180 except for maybe the Monaco hairpin for example.
Vor 5 MonateSiva kanth Sharma
@West Coast Wheelman I don’t think Tesla has steer by wire yet. I got confused and looked it up just now, I see a bunch of articles speculating Tesla will do that, and one Lexus production car that is going to have it. I personally think steer by wire is not a good idea, (break by wire too). There should be mechanical backups for safety critical systems.
Vor 5 MonateJoel Perez
The yoke steering wheel would work better if Elon made the ratio of turning radius with the wheel tighter. Full lock should only have you turn the yoke vertical. It may be a more sensitive steering and harder to get used to but Elon is reinventing everything, so maybe that would set the standard for future steering racks.
Vor 5 MonateEdwin +4
The automatic doorhandles are actually quite robust. Only heard few cases of failure

I got a Model 3 Performance and really love it, this one is awesome but obviously way out of the budget. The dream car is definitely the new roadster though. Also, I recommend leaving your hvac on auto, with the new holiday update you can choose between low medium and high, makes it easier and is much more efficient. Hated it at first but got used to it and it’s way better.
Vor 5 MonateJames Forst
I have a Plaid and it was rated at 348 miles at 100% when I took delivery. How on earth do you have so much more than that?
Vor 5 MonateMark Clinton
Some corrections to the video. Top speed is 175 in track mode(people have got it up to 218 mph by removing the limiter). You can control most things with the voice controls, so you are not required to take your eyes off the road to adjust things. If you want to do something on the screen, you can let auto-pilot take over... You can now play games from Steam if you have a 2022 or 2023 Plaid, which MQB and I don't, so that feels like false advertising. The rest of the video is spot on!
Vor 5 MonateMalik Midani
Also, I thought that the range is affected by the cold weather. When is spring or early summer, the range miles should increase a little

I'm also a Plaid S owner and just passed 30k miles. My turn signal buttons with well. Your's sounds broken. Also the horn button is great. Just put your while hand over the general area to get a rapid fire horn. Best hown I've heard. My biggest issue is how quickly I go through tires.
Vor 5 MonateOrion Nash +1
Sure they're quick off the line, but the other day a model S plaid was frustrated at me and tried to pass, so I floored it just to mess with him and he couldn't get past me. We were going about 25 mph when the feud started. Maybe there was some setting he didn't switch to, I don't know, but I was surprised my audi s8 won the battle. (I wasn't in sports mode either). He had no problem mashing the horn button when I finally turned left to go into my neighborhood. I know they struggle to accelerate as the initial speed increases, I leased a p90D for 3 years. Gotta say though, I expected more from the plaid.

This is how I feel about our Model Y Performance. it's not perfect, it can be annoying, but it's also the best car I have ever own, fast as hell, and insanely fun to drive.
