Vor yearBBC600 +331
@Josh Park the car doesn't exactly know it just assumes that if you haven't interacted with it that you're not alert (you're given a warning chime that you need to touch the steering wheel and move it a little) and it then goes into this shutdown procedure.

How bout traveling by plane and reaching your destination in 45 minutes depending. I take plane from LAX to San francisco and reaching there in less than hour vs driving 7 hours. And it does cost me $39.00 one way with free snack and drink and coffee. Way better than driving in car, or car with auto pilot. Who care. Yes I have a electric car to drive locally. Come on people use technology, travel in the AIR, not on the road and road rage.

A few points not mentioned. It is all good when you have a car full of people/friends so that your entertained for each 50 minute charging stop. Driving by yourself on business or to visit friends or family across country would be a pain and major inconvenience. My diesel Jetta can drive 700 miles on its small tank without stopping. Controlling the accelerator, brake and steering is a positive and intuitive experience I would not want to give up. @Guitarcat Lind 10 bucks for like 2-3 hours of driving max, Idk should be free for everyone imo. Or maybe like 20 bucks a month type fee for Tesla users. Like I’d be down to have a Tesla but not for long trips hell no. Like wtf happens if u do run out of battery in the middle of nowhere….not like they can bring electricity like u can w gas…..so is towing ur only option? That’s crazy sounding

@IFP Well see if you are a responisble human, that won't be an issue, because it reccomends charging ports for you to stop at.
Vor yearAlex Huntesmith +2
The thing I find with electric cars is that the stops usually come at a time when you kinda want to, or at least *should* take a break anyway. The average gas fill up takes 10 mins anyway and some cars can get to like 80% in 15 or 20 I think, a bit faster charging and maybe a little bit of extra range and they’d be perfect. Also, you can sit in the car and play games, watch tv, etc. Not just crappy mobile games either, you can play Witcher 3 on a Tesla.

Vor 8 MonateEric Morgan +128
Whenever I take a road trip in my Model Y, I have to be really careful to not spend too much time at the superchargers. It's easy to get distracted cause you're hanging out with friends so you end up spending an hour in a restaurant when you only needed 30 min to charge. You can minimize charging time by only charging to 70-80% because it charges wayyy slower past that. I think they wasted a lot of time by not leaving right away when it was charged enough.
Vor yearicekk007
Even you exclude the charging time, Ryan took 28 hours to cover 1263 miles, an average speed of 45 mph. That seems too slow. Why?
Vor 3 MonateEric Morgan
@icekk007 what is your question?
Vor 3 MonatePrimus +8
Super Charging actually makes road trips a lot more fun. The breaks are nice and appreciated. When you say that people look at you like you're crazy, but the time lost isn't that bad.
Vor 11 MonateWakas +3255

Vor 3 yearsExperial +222
Yeah plus as it steers for you on freeways or highways and stops and goes. But if you buy the actual 8,000 option autopilot as of now it can go on to streets, reed stop lights and stop signs turn lanes and a lot more. By the end of the year musk said it will be able to drive itself on the road but he has to get it passed by the government or some shit

the reason it limits charging to a certain percent is to extend the battery's lifetime i believe. costs less cycles to charge to, say, 80%. this is also something you should do with your phone, if you don't upgrade it every year.
Vor 10 Tagekevinrocksman +433
Just wanted to point something out, just checked ABRP and it says 5 hours of charging now. Looks like he didn't have it charging to 100% each time, it was cold out which affects the battery tremendously, he should try it again in the summer. I just did a 1200 mile trip from Kansas to Arizona and I charged for 3 hours
Vor yearJonathan Melhuish +20
There might be more V3 superchargers along that route now? They're about twice as fast (peak) than the old V2 chargers. Also winter might not be much slower than summer on a trip like this, because the battery should stay pretty warm if you keep going without any long stops.
Vor yearMatthew Yabsley +14
You don't charge to 100 percent for optimised charging. You can charge most batteries to 80 percent really quickly. From 80 to 100 percent takes a long long time. Just the nature of batteries.
Vor yearkevinrocksman +3
@Matthew Yabsley oh I know, that comment was mainly pointing out the number of stops, 80% is max usually
Vor year# +3
Imagine only being able to travel in the summer ffs
Vor yearkevinrocksman +3
@# now that I've been driving it more I now have 21k miles on it, driving it in the cold is not as bad as I originally thought, I lose about 15% max of my battery but that is mainly due to having to have the heater on so I don't freeze. All I gotta say is 1080 bucks for 21000 miles ain't bad at all
Vor yearDiamondRL +1
You mentioned the mileage not being accurate. That's because the map and battery mileage doesn't account for the weight of the car, weather or other factors that might reduce the overall mileage. The mileage is just based on the most you could get from the battery if it has 1 driver and the rest of the car is empty with good weather. Also the temperature of the battery also matters as well as the age (the older the battery the less mileage)

Vor 10 MonateRussell Wright +49
This video is a good reality check on where we’re actually at technology wise, we have a lot of technical issues that would have to improve before this is effective across country. For example, I live in one of those very off the grid, rural area’s where most people’s google maps loose signal and they’re back to reading a road atlas if they’ve got em. Also, there’s some long stretches of road like through the deserts in Arizona and New Mexico or in the snowy passes of Colorado where running out of battery could result in some pretty disastrous consequences. I’m talking about places where you can’t even depend on your phone to call for help. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it!
Vor yearblyt50
exactly, ive seen incidents where gas cars were stuck in the snow and the ppl nearly died.
Vor 10 Monateicekk007 +1
Hi Russell: Electric vehicles like Tesla work for most applications and roads most of the time, but not ALL the time. Ryan suffered reduced range due to cold temperature in Chicago area. In a rural area with hardly any charging stations, you can't road trip in an EV. You can use it as a daily driver and charge at home.
Vor 3 MonateMiles Peterson +14
True! Batteries don't work very well in the cold. You can try this for yourself at home. Just put some AA batteries in a freezer for about 2 hours. when the time is done you can measure the voltage across the batteries with a multimeter, and the voltage should be lowered to about 0.6V instead of 1.5V like it normally should. and then when the batteries warn up the voltage should rise back up to the original voltage around 1.5V.
Vor yearDaTonkBoiii +2
You're gonna burn down my fucking house!
Vor 11 MonateBreakcaft +36
if you charge right, you can save about half the charging time, (might be limited by the availablily of charging stations in the US) charging to 50% is about twice as fast as charing from 50 to 100%, due to a higher voltage in the battery.

Preface: I own a model 3. The range and superchargers are the literal only reason why my Tesla is not the car I would take for a road trip. It's incredible. The vehicle is absolutely phenomenal in every way, and I love it, but the range you get is just not that fun when you factor in the supercharger locations are always out of the way and too far between them. If they can solve that problem, even if it's just a set of 4 of them here and there between larger ones...everyone who owns a tesla will be far better off.
Vor yearMarrisaPlays +10

that’d be like saying “imagine what a disaster it would be if everyone in america had to use these gasoline pumping stations that costed so much money to use” when cars first came out. the more popular the E-Vehicles get the more charging stations their will be. and at the comfort of your own home, where your car will be most of the time you’ll have your own charger which is free to use. Stopping 20 minutes to charge every 100+ miles sounds a lot more practical than stopping every couple hours and blowing a days paycheck pumping fossil fuels into your gasoline powered vehicle.

Desired101 Bro you can’t be talking and why are you discriminating by identities, do you really need to stoop down that low to have anything to say
Vor 3 yearsAubs +1
@Mas7rReaper12 Identities aren't odd obsessions. No one is discriminating or telling you what to do. No one even came close to stooping down to your level.

Does anyone know the music used in this video?

Seems more like trip between charge stations than trip to Chicago. I like how it took 3 hours to drive 100 miles on highway, way to go

Great video, shows the problems at this time with EV's at this time.
Vor yearMathias B.
It's really not a problem stopping to charge. You'll quickly learn that when you get an EV

Ryan had like 15 different voices in this video and i love it

Ryan, I hope you know you can take over autopilot without turning it off. All you do is grab the wheel, lightly turn it, and autopilot turns off.
Vor yearDanielle
Amazingly put together video. Lots of laughs 🤣 i learned to stick w gas lollll
Vor yearmaxigol1977 +1688
So autopilot is essentially a glorified cruise control.
Vor 2 yearsWoodbabyCTB +105
Since this video came out, they have approved it dramatically.
Vor 2 yearsCornBoyzFTW +30
nah fam it’s legit autopilot, definitely worth buying to be honest

Autopilot on airplanes is a glorified cruise control. What is your point.
Vor 2 yearsVK +5
Christopher C. wow "something". You are truely a very knowledgable person. Sry for doubting your genius
Vor 2 yearsVK +1
Christopher C. my point was that planes use cruis control also which is named autopilot.
Vor 2 yearslanestale.y
as convenient and cool as it is autopilot just kinda seems useless unless you’re on a long trip

The most honest auto pilot review to date!
Vor yearEd +1
IT IS NOT to date. Full Self-Driving Autopilot does: Navigate on Autopilot Auto lane change Autopark Summon Start summon Traffic light and stop sign control and soon will me able to autosteer on city streets.

Ryan sounds like a completely different person when he loses his voice and it was making me laugh so hard

If Tesla was a hybrid where you could also put in gas, that would be a game changer.
Vor yearStormKing-Odar +4
lol it literally would not be
Vor yearAlreyxn +1
I think the point for teslas is for them to help the environment so it shouldn't be using gas
Vor yearflaminmongrel
@Alreyxn the point is to create and occupy a market as it so happens to help the environment.
Vor yearDiogo Seigneuret +2
@Alreyxn I'm not sure you know what it takes to produce a tesla battery...and maybe you shouldn't research about it if you wanna keep that opinion of yours....
Vor yearAlreyxn
@Diogo Seigneuret does it sound like I'm keeping an opinion of Something factual? I just didn't know keep this to yourself

I'm not sure I'd trust my life to one quite yet. Sat in one with a friend recently, near dusk, with improper lane markings due to previous lane construction, caused it to swerve badly. It also turned itself off multiple times, which would have caused an accident once if not for quick driver intervention.
Vor yearJonathan Frisby +1
you should do this again with all the upgrades in the tesla's and the tesla supercharger network

Marginally interesting to highlight distance travelled vs time spent charging. Just wait till you can't charge until enough wind to spin those wind turbines or the Sun shines on those acres and acres of solar panels.
