We went through something similar (but thankfully less severe), anchored in the Gulf of Fonseca. We had a weather forecast of 5 to 10 kts (all night) and yet, without warning, an intense wind (maybe 50 to 80 kt gusts) and rain appeared out of nowhere. Lasted for about 30 minutes. The gulf is surrounded by mountains and we thjnk the cell formed there. Thankfully our anchor held but we have learnt to not entirely trust weather forecasts. May those that lost their lives that day rest in peace.

i think that was a storm called derecho. it moves fast, has tornadic and stronger ones have hurricane force wind and ofc the rain.

We have been cruising for two years and I have seen my share of storms but I have never seen anything move this fast and with such violence. It looked like a wall coming and if it looks bad on camera it has to be ten times more worse in real life

I was wondering why I didn't see anyone properly prepared or busy bringing things down and in and tighten, looked like people where underestimating it but seeing your comment it now all make sense, must have been crazy scary

Wow! I have ambitions of cruising my sailboat. When i see a vid like this, it makes me wonder. I have been hammered by uncalled for weather at the Channel Islands off California. The feeling of helplessness is frightening

It really pays to keep an eagle eye on the weather. Esp. with climate change knocking on the door, the weather seems to be becoming ever more unpredictable.

Le problème en plus de la tempête est aussi qu'à Girolata dans un but officiellement "écologique " mais en réalité "financier " .... Il faut que tout soit rentable .... on stocke un maximum de bateaux dans un minimum de place . Dès qu'un problème survient voilà le résultat .

J'ai connu la Girolata il y a 40 ans. À l'époque quel charmant petit mouillage tranquille. Aujourd'hui...😪

Le 18 août, mon bateau était au mouillage, à Ajaccio. (Ancre à vis) Je surveillais attentivement la météo depuis plusieurs jours. Je me renseignais auprès des professionnels. J’avais des amis en mer. Le phénomène a été aussi soudain que violent. Les commentaires acides de ceux qui étaient bien au chaud dans leur lit sont vains. La question, quelles sont les meilleures attitudes adopter. La prévention, prise de météo (là ça n’a pas fonctionné) A 8heures du matin, beaucoup de bateau étaient au mouillage. Et pour ceux qui étaient en mer, eh oui, il y a des plaisanciers. (Des être humains qui aiment la mer et la nature après une année de travail........). Donc, quels sont les bons sites météo fiables : météo consult, vento mare, winfinder, windy, meteo 60 etc... ?????? Quels sont les sites ou applications d’alerte ? Les conseils pour ceux qui sont à l’ancre, les voiliers, les moteurs ? Et les conseils pour ceux qui étaient en mer. La solidarité des gens de mer, c’est l’entraide et le partage de l’expérience, avec bienveillance. Toute vie humaine mérite d’être sauvée. (Même celle des plaisanciers !)

Pays to have lots of chain and warp on board and selection of anchors. I have a 6.4 m yacht but carry 45 m chain plus 50m warp with 20m 10mm chain plus 30m nylon rope., plus more.14 kilo, 10 kilo, 7.5 kilo anchors have survived force 10/11 gale at anchor over 2/3days.

Ce qui s’est produit là, ce n’est plus une simple tempête… des vents à 210km/h en Europe, du jamais vu de mémoire récente! Pourquoi personne nulle part n’utilise le terme de Cyclone ! Car ceci relève bel et bien d’un Cyclone, à mon avis …. Et j’ai bien peur que ce ne soit qu’un début et que ce type de monstre climatique et d’une ampleur que personne n’a imaginée (on le voit clairement dans toutes les vidéo qui relatent cet événement) ne soit que trop précurseur de l’avenir …

I've been in a few cyclones but I've never seen one appear this fast and that vicious. Normally that take a day or two before the eye even passes through. That was crazy

@@ericmendes593 Si tu es seul sans voisins qui t'arrivent dessus, tu as la solution que j'ai vite adoptée ce jour, tu files les max de chaîne en sécurité 8x la hauteur d'eau pour moi et il me restait 10 m dans la baille, et tu restes face au vent à la barre au moteur pour soulager le train de mouillage, ancre, chaîne, guideau et paré à tout larguer. Pour ma part je m'étais plaqué à une falaise sous le vent, dans un fond de sable.... rien à coté et derrière. Pas de leçons, juste tout analyser et choisir en fonction des distances, lieux, situation et timing. Que du bon sens marin et qu'un capitaine à bord. Sans vagues, protégé, focalisé sur mon navire, j'aurais pu tenir encore longtemps. Seul le moral pouvait lâcher. Ma femme a été exemplaire sur ce coup. Bravo matelot.

Ce n'est pas un cyclone c'est un super orage une combinaison d'orage super cellulaire des des descendants venant du cumulonimbus quand les précipitations ça va tout seul elles emportent l'air froid qui a un sommet du cumulonimbus c'est bon violent touche le sol d'une extrême violence logiquement ce vent doit se répandre dans tous les côtés du rideau de pluie tout autour du rideau de pluie la nature cherche l'équilibre cela va donc engendrer des vents super puissants le problème c'est qu'avec le réchauffement climatique les océans se réchauffent les orages ont plus d'alimentation en eau chaude et les précipitations sont plus intenses et comme elles sont plus intenses elles vont former des épisodes de vent plus extrême parce que l'air sera repoussé brutalement quand quand le rideau de précipitations ça va être fortement sur le sol

Techniquement et théoriquement, c’en est pas un, je te l’accorde, et on peut prédire un cyclone des jours à l’avance… ce qui n’a pas été le cas ici. Trop tard, je peux plus modifier mon commentaire… je veux surtout pas induire les gens en erreur ! 😇

Typical destruction involving people who have more money than brains. When a cyclone is coming, the first thing a sailing yacht owner is supposed to do is remove headsails, then install a storm pendant with increased scope to reduce peak mooring loads. Clearly, with all the shredded sails on wrecked boats, it doesn't look like very many people removed or properly secured sails. With 120 mph winds, it's surprising there weren't more dismasted sailboats. The usual excuse is "we were too far away to get there before the storm". Newsflash - it's your boat and your responsibility to contract with someone ahead of time in the event of an approaching storm. Sadly for those who planned ahead and acted appropriately, it doesn't save their properly secured boat from some idiot's runaway toy that plows into it.

It isn't a cyclone it's a derecho so a large thunderstorm cell. Even the experts only gave 12 hours notice it could hit so as a person that has a boat go down on it's mooring, I didn't know it was coming, no one notified me, do you watch the weather channel every night and can at the drop off your hat whiz off to your boat. If I'd known I would have gone and stayed on my boat. People were killed on land, so they didn't know it was coming either. It must feel good to be Capt Hindsight.

By news reports etc, it was a rare, unprecedented and unexpected weather event. Found some more info, Ship they got about an hour and that was a middle alert, the danger alert was issued a few minutes before it arrived!!! Would have you been prepared? The weather event covered some 400km. Looking deeper, the meteorological bodies did not have the equipment to predict the event, they are now putting in weather buoys around the islands in the Med, but how much warning time will that give?

@@wayneg8763 Even though my boat is in one of the most protected harbors on the east coast of the United States, I look at weather forecasts daily during the mooring season -especially when hurricanes are forming in the Atlantic. If winds of 50 mph or more are forecast, I go down and remove sails/dodger and hook up the storm bridle. If I'm away, I contact the boatyard manager and arrange to have this done for me. That's what being a responsible boat owner means. If you're too lazy to either monitor your boat's circumstances directly or pay someone to do it, you really shouldn't have a boat on a mooring - you're a danger to every other responsible boat owner in the mooring field.

@@SVPearler That's a lot of BS. Warnings went out on Wednesday, 8/17, to local authorities that the area could be hit by gusts of 60mph the following day. They did not have the data to predict 130 mph gusts at that time but if you own a boat on a mooring and the forecast warns of 60mph gusts, you or your designated agent should be taking down sails and beefing up mooring lines - at least 6 hours before the front hits. Severe storms don't materialize out of nothing with zero or less than 12 hours notice - unless you're living on Jupiter. Nice try.

I saw a vid made by a French sailor who’s boat is usually based in a Corsican port (I can’t remember the name) who went through this one, showing images too, witnessing of what he and his family encountered that day. He said that yes, in August the Mediterranean see on European coasts is usual of storms… but never such brutal ones

Le train de grains est parti de Barcelone ça aurait dû être anticipé c'est vrai. Mais de toutes façons pas de places et pas assez de ports en Corse.(pour 2 mois car le reste de l'année c'est bien vide) comme je dis toujours après avoir passé maintes fois 2 - 4 jours au mouillage sous les rafales.. Revellata Santa Giulia, Santa Manza, Ajaccio, nord Sardaigne.......faut se méfier de la Corse, en plus en aout.

Bonjour Cheri la météo marine ainsi que la météo nationale n'a absolument pas mis d'alerte sur ce phénomène très rare qui s'est produit en Méditerranée en Corse.

See the infos by the user "Barbatore" above. He sailed the Aeolian Islands near Sicily in these days and he says that there were infos about a huge stormfront days before moving in to Korsika. I also saw this far away in Germany on tv or internet( can't remember exactly). Now I wonder why some weather- forecasts didn't warn in advance? Red a comment from a chap whose Yacht was destroyed there and he reported a weather forecasts from a wellknown nautical chanel the evening before. " Winds up to 20 knots from the northeast", which meant for him wind from the shore in this bight.

Squalls like this are difficult to predict. That looked to me like a micro burst from a well formed mature storm cell. They can form and grow incredibly quickly in the right conditions. It’s pretty horrific…
