I may have missed if you mentioned this, but if you shave often, another huge plus of the safety razor is it causes fewer ingrown hairs because it’s not trying to cut the hair below the skin.
Vor 2 TageFurkan Udmir +5
I have always used machine on my skin because if you use razor it makes your beard and moustache to grow thicker and more often. But not a machine like they are using I am using philips one blade which looks more like a thick razor
Vor TagJacob Ogden +62
@Furkan Udmir The hair growing thing is just an urban legend based on the way your hair looks when growing from a stub.

Vor TagFurkan Udmir +1
@𝐚𝐧𝐦𝐨𝐥 I like it but I don't shave every day I shave every 3-4 weeks my facial hair don't grow that fast but its very nice I use it with foam so the hair would be a little vertical for the machine to grab

I've had this conversation with my female friends. Safety razor is the way to go. Close shave and low cost. With the added real estate that needs grooming (legs), it's the undisputed winner. Downside is it takes more skill than some of the contoured swivel-headed disposables on the market.
Vor 12 StundenAltmetalpunk
Legit I love using my partners razor for my face, especially my neck. The curve is so nice.
Vor 11 StundenMexiKazn21
The safety razor is the way to go. Cheaper in the long run and gives a closer shave. Just dont press too hard and let the weight of the razor do the work. All you need is patience to learn the angle. Once you get that down, you're set. If the blade don't cut or it tugs on the hair, change the blade bc its dull or find one that works better for longer.
Vor 10 Stundencyphre +53
I think a lot of it does come down to hair types overall. Facial hair seems to be even more varied than the hair on top of ones' head. For example, I always shave against the grain because it's the only way to actually get a close shave. No difference in comfort, just a matter of the hairs not being easy to cut if I try to cut with the hair direction. Or also, that pivoting heads are super useless on multi-blade razors for me. I literally just hold the head in place to get a proper grip against my stout facial hairs.
Vor 2 TageMichael B
Have you tried making a first pass with the direction of the whiskers then a second pass against the grain (no need to re-apply shaving cream in between)? I saw a professional barber do it that way to demonstrate how to shave with a straight razor. He used long continuous strokes and rinsed the blade after each pass.
Vor 11 StundenKing Danett +8
I hope you guys eventually do a follow up focusing on different types of shaving cream and after shave. I swear after shave doesn't actually do anything at all

Hey Matpat, speaking of shaving, there’s an idea that shaving your armpits makes them less smelly, but is that actually true and does it even matter if you use deodorant?
Vor 2 TageJoey +168

As a woman who used to shave her legs and lady bits a lot, I used to always get razor burn. Now I use a trimmer and it keeps the hair short but not too short that I get razor burn. I imagine this could work on the face also.
Vor 2 TageMykyta P. +1
Trimmer is the best option for men as well. I haven't shaved in about a decade.
Vor 3 StundenHnkka
Does safety razors work for women too?
Vor 15 MinutenSparky-a-nature +32
I think the part about not liking how you look while clean shaven might have a little to do with face shape. I have a really square face so staying baby smooth works, but for more rounded heads it might not
Vor 2 Tageabsatanas +7
I found this video quite amusing. My shaving routine is always: buzzer head of electric razor with and then against the grain, and then disposable razor with and then against the grain. I make sure my face is thoroughly wet the whole way through but I don't use shaving cream because it's uncomfortable on my skin and things run easier without it anyway. It's very comfortable, I pretty much only ever cut myself when I'm struggling with acne, and it leaves me very smooth.
Vor 2 Tageabsatanas +1
I just saw the rest of the video after the close shave conclusion and, oh yeah I forgot this video is just about face shaving for men.😅 Uh, yeah I guess if you prefer stubble, you do that my dooods. I would suggest just using a face buzzer then.
Vor 2 TageSaica +8
The handle of the Leaf Razor is similar to that of the gillete but works as a safety razor, it holds up to 3 half blades. It costs a little more than regular safety razors, but it's more comfortable, especially for shaving the head, although I haven't tried it on the beard.
Vor 2 TageSindereput
As someone only shaving all two weeks, i have to say, the single blade safety razor is the most cost effective.
Vor 6 StundenDapper_Armadillo +4
I've always had an issue with multibladed razors as when my shave is too close I'll get a ton of in-grown hairs because they shave to the point that it's under the skin.
Vor TagTriAurora R +1832
I would love a version of this episode for women because I desperatly want to know how to make shaving myself more efficent, so it doesn't take an hour or more to shave because I'm not shaving every day or every other day. Also I would love the episode to anwser how often should you shave and should you shave in the shower or bath or somewhere else. I know that this would be a lot of ground to cover, but I(and I belive many others) would find it extremely helpful and eye opening.
Vor 3 TageSarah Grace +192
I totally agree, shaving my legs is one of my least favorite chores, but I also like being clean shaven. Please tell me the female theorists (or some more brave others) will be working on this!
Vor 3 TageAravis +71
I was about to type the same comment! These were my exact thought throughout the whole video. Also would like to see some men shaving their legs as well (trans inclusivity)
Vor 3 Tagekerricaine +64
@Aravis I'd love to see some experimenting because I've found that mens razors are more comfortable on my face but women's razors handle leg and body hair better...which i guess is what they're designed for lol..
Vor 3 TageBredarie +45
I would love to see them do an episode on this. Right now I use two different razors. One for my beard (yes, women can grow beards), and one for my legs/ other areas. I would love to see them do an episode on whether I really need two razors, in addition to all the great points @triaurorar3291 mentioned.
Vor 3 TageSarah Grace +41
Also, what's the deal with shaving arms? Armpits? Is there something we can use from head to toe or if not, what are our best options?
Vor 3 TageTsukiraAquarius +6
This was very insightful. I'm wondering how much of this applies to shaving other places, like legs, pits, etc. Also, is there a reason why waxing and hair removal cream is usually marketed towards women and not men? Is the skin that grows hair on the face and more sensitive regions different from the skin on the legs?
Vor 2 TageMateus Silva +2
The reason is culture expects men to be hairy and women hairless. And yes, the skin of body parts has different sensibilities.
Vor 14 StundenA Slippy Sloth +3
I went form normal razor to electric to safety. All in all I prefer safety, but there’s a learning curve. In the end it’s a much smoother and closer shave
Vor Tagatimholt +13
I've known for ages that a safety razor is dirt cheap, but I had no idea that the other options were so close in price. I kinda want to give the Gilette another try, now.

I would add that the shave from a new safety razor blade is always better than the 5-20 of the Gillette.

While using a safety razor looks like the best option, I only shave 4-5 times a month. The cheap 3-blade disposables are my go-to since I don't have a lot of facial hair. I never had a problem with these razors, and I feel like the shave isn't much different from a 5 or 6 blade razor.

One of the biggest thing I've started doing, is switching from Gillette to Harrys, then someone on reddit suggested using Shampoo instead of shaving cream. You end up using less and it keeps costs down overall.

Does skin type effect the amount of cuts you receive, since I've never had a cut on my face and I basically just drag a 2 dollar razor over everything (sometimes even my lips) and I've never had any issues?
Vor 2 TageChristina Polander
Thought of a few possibilities for future theories: - I heard from someone recently that your shampoo is supposed to suds up, if it doesn't, you need to apply again. Is that true? - does letting conditioner sit make it more affective? - which type of fashion purchasing gives you the most for your money; buying cheap, buying expensive but high quality, thrifting, or sewing? (And please include "thredup" in that comparison
Vor 2 Tagehalf_chub
i was kinda hoping for straight razor since that is my shapeup/shaver of choice. i understand the fear of it but it really only gets dangerous if you dont care for the blade and let it get burs and let the actual blade come out of alignment. i personally use a straight razor with replaceable blades for convenience until i get myself a REAL straight razor. to me the trick is to trim it down first and then smooth it out with the razor
Vor 2 TageSilent Joe
I’m not too surprised by the conclusion. I’ve stopped shaving as a whole and just use hair clippers to get me that short stubble whenever my facial hair gets too long. Then I clean up the edges with an epilator
Vor TagPrincesJules +1290
I'd love to see a companion episode to this for leg/underarm shaving with the same perimeters. I personally like the cheap razors, but i know women in my life who hate them, so im curious if the results would be similar to these tests or different.
Vor 3 TageGloomy_Gal +53
I've only ever used cheap razors so I want to know if there's any big differences between those and fancy electric ones I've seen ads for.
Vor 3 TageKayleeMae +19
YESSS I was literally just thinking thiss
Vor 3 Tagepuppybunnysquid +22
@gloomy_gal I use both electric and the dollar store ones. The electric is great for the long hair if you let it grow out like I do (because I shave if I know I'm gonna show leg at all), but it leaves like the stubble, even on the short hair setting. It's also nice since I don't have to get into the shower with it, so less warm/hot water used. The cheap razor I use to get the smooth finish, but I wouldn't use on long hair. Razor burn
Vor 3 TageTwinCalibration +22
God right? I was thinking about this as well. The legs have a lot more surface area and dull out the razor fairly fast. Then there was a comment i saw below about the difference between woman's and men's products with the price differences and performance.
Vor 3 TageCrimson cloud +19
Also for the legs, you could test alternative hair removal techniques such as an epilator or wax strips
Vor 3 TageMichelle Risse
I am curious if this experiment could be expanded to women's razors? Since many women are trying to get the smooth feel on their legs/armpits, it would be interesting to see what would be the most effective shave for a woman.
Vor TagDylan Sanborn
5:48 oh hey! I wanted to mention, I used a straight razor with a replaceable single blade; keeping the blade honed and everything was too much to do without getting paid for it lol so when it was dull I’d stick in a new one altogether
Vor 2 Tageprankster 95
You guys should do the opposite of this video and do what is the best way to grow facial hair
Vor 2 TageScarabic Enterprises
I shave my face with a the same set of clippers I use for the sides of my mohawk. I hate a close shave and I have sensitive skin, the clippers keep a comfortable amount of stubble and they last for about 5-10 years (of regular use) only costing $30-$80aud depending on the brand. I think that beats the safety razer by hundreds of dollars if you do the math.
Vor 2 TageSara Sheppard
You should do a follow up with "indie" companies, ones that claim to improve the shaving experience.. One example; I saw one with three blades but they were farther apart, had more support to keep the blades from flexing, and each blade had a flex point. I don't remember the name of it though.
Vor 2 TageAn Ma Narrative +145
Definitely want a follow up episode covering body hair removal, not just with different types of razors but also with waxing, epilators, cream etc.
Vor 3 TageDali +2
If anyone is struggling with their downstairs area I recommend waxing using a Himalayan salt scrub and la roche posay lipkar gentle body wash! I struggled for years buying all types of products but this simple routine cleared me :)
Vor 3 TageCatastrophic Failure +5
YES i was just about to ask this too! and i'd like to see some testing for remover of women's facial hair too (ik ik it's natural but i want to know how effective or safe each method is), because i've used a small electric razer for my upper lip hair (thanks genetics...), products like nair, tweezing, and waxing throughout my life and i've had varying success with each
Vor 3 Tagejunkhead412
I generally keep a beard but i use a trimmer to take care of my neck line and a 3 blade disposable to get in closer. Regardless of beard or not though i have always dry shaved (both against/with the grain) and just splash on 91% alcohol afterwards. Most times i never get razor rash unless i rush/go over the same spot alot
Vor Tagfallenangel114817
Should do an episode on the different types or womens razors and how a lot of them have moved to mens razors.
Vor 2 TageAustin Althaber
Every technique is different. Personally, I tame the facial hair with an electric trimmer before finishing the stubble off with a razor and microneedler

Vor 3 TageEmmerz Leigh +28
At my Walmart, Gillette's women's 3 blade WAS 10 dollars for 2 sets. Men's 5 blade for a set of FOUR? Seven Dollars. Men get a set of four 5-blade for $7, women get two 5-blade for 10 dollars. The only women's 5blade i could find was a different brand for 9 dollars for a set of 6. Anyways that Pink Tax is ROUGH. We get less blades for More Money. I can't get a close shave like I like unless I'm in the shower while shaving. I've tried shaving with just shaving cream but I end up shaving to close on my face and not close enough on my neck. Something about running water is the only way that I can shave my incredibly scraggly facial hair and when I say scraggly I mean scraggly. The hair, specifically on my neck, grow in every direction and lay only flat really close to my skin. So unless I'm shaving under running water I'll have a thin layer of itchy stubble on my face all day.
Vor 2 TageNirgendsdahierschon
Here in Germany there are that from day 3 in very many different versions (more blades, with aloe vera and more) and one of them from a no name company works best for my face with ultra sensitive shaving foam. @Texas Nationalist my wife has PCOS, and she can't grow a beard. It never gets that thick. Her hair is more of a peach fuzz that grows everywhere then the regular kind of facial hair you see on men. It's def an issue that bothers her so she shaves a lot, but it never actually grows like fully beyond a certain point. If she didn't shave at all, her facial hair would become noticeable. But it's not anywhere as thick as mine gets. That said, not everyone with PCOS has the same exact condition. Can only speak for what I know.

I like a close shave on the parts of my face I actually shave. Lower neck and upper lip. My mustache isn’t very full and just looks bad so keep that thing down. Honestly, I think if you want the stubble look, use a pair of clippers with the closest guard.
Vor TagLord Cane
I do agree with you on the beard being a large part of our identity, however I would like to add that the close shave is actually preferable under certain circumstances. If you’re shaving all of your face you want a little bit of the hair to remain, but if you shave in order to keep the shape of your beard it gets tricky. Depending on whether you want your beard to fade over your face or to have clean contours, the closest possible shave might actually be preferable. Loved the video by the way :)

Dear Mat, my groupmate and I in chemical engineering class were discussing anti aging creams, and she told me that a professor had told her is that what anti aging creams basically do is cause a mild allergic reaction to the skin which makes it swell and thus makes the wrinkles dissapear. I need a theory on this really really bad, I mean she heard it from a professor in chemistry but he majored in biophysics so could you find out if it is true or not??🙏🙏
Vor 3 TagePandora Vex +45
😂 Retinol one of the most common anti-aging creams doesn’t work that way. Retinol increases skin cell production (proliferation). It helps unclog pores. Retinol also exfoliates your skin and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a fresher, plump appearance. Retinol is also known as Vitamin A.

Vor 2 TageJames Middleton
I tend to use electric but if I want a proper shave I use a cut throat razor (straight razor) listening to your experience with the barber, it sounds like he just had no idea what he was doing or wasn't using a sharp blade, they are buttery smooth when sharp, the only problem with them is that they are so sharp that you will finish your shave, wash your face and then watch as little micro cuts start bleeding, you never feel a thing. That's why I don't use them crazy often but if I need the closest shave possible, that's what I use.

Back for I went with a beard (to accompany my bald head) I tried a razor a few times, and gave up after nicking myself a bunch each attempt xD
Vor 2 TageOvadex +383
Biggest problem I see with everyone using the safety razor is they're putting way too much pressure on it. You start getting irritation and nicks when you're pushing it into your face. You just need to glide it along letting the weight of the razor do the work. That's why they're usually so hefty. When I shave I'm usually holding the razor by the last inch or so of the handle.
Vor 3 TageLoke 666 +45
It is because they are used to disposable razors which need some pressure or they wont shave you at all.
Vor 3 TageMeesh T. +7
The weight of the handle helps glide it through, which takes a little bit of getting used to, especially if you're used to very lightweight disposable razors.
Vor 3 TageLiving1tUpAllday +11
The safety razor had my anxiety through the roof. So much pressure. Glad they didn't use a straight razor
Vor 3 TageOskar Leirvåg +6
Also, you should use the other hand to stretch the skin too
Vor 3 TageArem Rae +7
If they go for a particularly higher end safety razor, that problem actually gets pretty well solved just by the engineering of the product. Something like Henson's safety razor.
Vor 3 TageIris Black
I use body wash to shave because I always have to go over my legs and stuff more than once and shaving cream just wipes away instead of staying on the blades like the soap does. With shaving cream I always get strawberry legs and raw skin and with body wash that doesn't happen.
Vor 2 TageChaosAC24
It’s wild that the barber you went to didn’t know how to use a straight razor. My barber and quite a few barbers I know easily use them for facial hair and fades during most haircuts/shaves. They use them very well too. Great video!
Vor TagNekoboyGames +14
Now we need a leg shaving version!
Vor 2 TageSam Stj
Omg yes
Vor 2 TageStephen Carpenter
I was a little disappointed that the safety razor wasn't a henson since they are the only company I see actively going out advertising one and claiming theirs is so much better than anyone else's.

I love episodes where more of the team is on camera. I love Matpat & Steph but it’s fun seeing the other faces behind team theorist too!
Vor 3 TageNaokarma +2
Couldn't agree more. Reminds me of LTT, where each team member has their own specialty, and can add in their own perspective on something for a better experience on both sides.
Vor 2 TageJames Kirk
I really want mat to see the safety razors that you twist and the top butterfly opens up. Most easily impressed men
Vor TagRyptoll
I grow quite a substantial amount of facial hair, which is also very dense/coarse, and shave it every day with a safety razor. I definitely like it for the price, although the learning curve was kinda annoying. But now that I've learned it, it doesn't irritate my skin as much as cartridge razors. I also like how masculine it is, admittedly. My goal is to get my face as smooth as possible, because society looks weirdly at women with a 5 o'clock stubble. Also btw the safety razor is called that because it came out as the first (safer) alternative to the straight razor, back in... the 1930's, if I recall correctly. The cartridge razor is much more modern, and yes, even safer than the safety razor. Minus the disposable kind.
Vor TagProtojager
My takeaway from this: Keep using my electric clippers for shaping and bulk trimming, get a safety razor to clean up my neck line every couple of days.
Vor TagChris Ryan
With the beard, matpat looks like he evolved into his third form.. My main take away: MatPat looks great with a light beard!.
Vor 2 TagePixel
Can we just take a moment to acknowledge matpat could EASILY pull off the full beard if he chose to?

We're now only a few steps away from MatPat teaching us how to shave our...other places

As a 16 year old without a single hair on face and chin....I see it as a absolute win 👏 👏 👏👏

I wish I could get a close shave with the electric razor. I still end up having to use blades even after I use the electric one.
Vor 2 TageEnrico Malatesta
Thanks for the clarification that Mat did in fact not grow that much facial hair in four days. Probably eliminates a lot of potential insecurities of viewers. 😄
Vor 2 TageDragon_of_Metal
Kind of disappointed they ruled out the straight razor. Having tried multiple types I found straight razor the fastest, cleanest and least irritating of them all. Though I suppose it can take a few weeks to get used to it and learn the importance of sharpening it often. I stroped it before each use.
Vor 2 TageBrandon Ouellette
Mat looks a lot better with the beard it also makes him look like a dad

I would love to see this idea applied to the women of Team Theory with shaving their legs. I know for me, shaving my legs is super annoying and I almost always get Razor burn on my legs, so I end up using hair removal cream(s) because it's painless and easy
Vor 3 TageTemperance Sunlight +28
I would add the male razors in the experiment. I've found them better than the ones marketed to us. The pink tax is real. At least to shave the legs. Also, I'm team no shaving cream. Use unscented soap, specially if you have sensitive skin.
Vor 3 TageShyamli Tiwari +6
@Temperance Sunlight true I would like to know if it's a placebo effect that I feel or does it truly make a difference.
Vor 3 TageRaina Lystre +2
Being honest- with how bad razor burn is and how much it hurts the days after as hair’s growing back in (very tough and grabs everything). I don’t shave my legs. Just simple as that. It definitely would be interesting however if they took this to the other sec. Think it would be interesting to see if there’s a noticeable difference in skin and hair between the two, and what the general mood of them is (like the guys not liking the close shave even though society says its what they want)
Vor 3 TageAlpha Kowa Clips
Hair creams are painful! Wym, the moment you have a single scratch it's like putting acid in your legs!
Vor 3 TageCraftyMagic Dollz +4
See and with me- if i use Nair- i end up with a second degree chemical burn my skin.
Vor 3 TageNarra Beckett
It’s crazy that disposable razors aren’t as cheap. Ig it’s best to stay away from them for your face, but it’s decent for your armpits. I’ve never had an issue with them

Question: Can stress cause hair (facial or otherwise) to grow faster?
Vor 19 StundenIndy509
Don't know about growing faster but I do know stress will cause your hair to turn white faster!
Vor 13 StundenLachlan Henry
The best shave cream is head and shoulders daily 2 in one, by far, in my experience. I've never used it for my scalp. I find electric shavers to be a twice a day or more kind of just quick braap in the office or the car, like always super short hairs. Oh yeah, and ALWAYS disinfect and dry store your equipment.
Vor TagKenJyn76 +383
That's crazy that Matt managed to find a barber who can't use a straight razor. Never been to one who didn't use one
Vor 3 TageKenJyn76 +50
So with a straight or safety razor, the technique is to pull your skin tight and shave, and avoid moving the razor back and forth. Because it's one sharp blade, it'll never pull, so shaving against the grain is fine. You are more likely to get ingrowns the smoother you cut it though, because you're pulling the hair out of your pores by pulling on the skin and then it goes back under the skin when you let go. If you're prone to ingrowns, it's likely your hair will curl instead of coming back out of the pore It's also just the cheapest. You can get 100 blades for $10. Learn once, find a blade you like, and you'll just have to order a couple times a year depending on how often you shave (less often because with better technique it's a much closer shave)
Vor 3 TageSherlock Who +11
It's not a talent that is always taught especially as most men shave at home
Vor 3 TageKenJyn76 +13
@Sherlock WhoYeah I was taught to shave with an electric trimmer and a 5-6 blade razor. Much worse experience imo. I keep a beard so it was more than worth learning a safety and straight to line up my cheeks and neck lol. I haven't bought blades in years
Vor 3 TageMorrigan KASA +7
Sadly many barbers nowadays can't use "Straight Razors".
Vor 3 TageTsamane +5
I get one everytime I get my hair cut, cause its so relaxing when you have someone who knows what they are doing.
Vor 3 TagePopeKurt
I use F5 for shaving my head. Shave daily. They last about 3-4 shaves before i replace or i start getting serious irritation. The costs are extreme, but gives a better shave.
Vor TagZachary Kantola
"It is HALF the cost of the second place razor!" Said MatPat while showing a chart demonstrating it's less than a third the cost.
Vor 2 TageJustin Farischon
I find it crazy that you are supposed to change the blade with less than 10 shaves. I'm over here using the same blade for months. I only replace the blades once when the blade starts to tear the hairs out.
Vor 2 TageVBGaming
my personal shaving routine: electric shaver (Not Razor) first to bring the hairs down to a short length; condition the area during bathing or a quick wash; shaving cream to help the blade catch the hairs; manual razor to bring the hair down to the skin; the cleaning part of it is still fairly important also I use disposable razors with rarely any facial cuts, although looking at the cost I may switch to the safety razor
Vor 2 TageJasper Highwind
Question though, which way is the best way to shave? With or against the grain?
Vor 2 TageE M +327

Vor 3 TageBunny_Bill +20
Ikr🙏🏻 My school did this with the teachers and I had no idea who the male teachers were without their beards🧍🏼
Vor 3 TageThe Dullohan +8
I feel there pain. I am 35 and have never been with out my facial hair since I was 13. During covid I let my beard grow really long, and last Halloween I cut it short for a Halloween costume. The day I cut it my 5 year old daughter looked at me and said What's going on with your face? I thought it was really funny.
Vor 3 TageDaviL
I use an electric shaver, but I also use a aftershave with it to get rid of red bumps
Vor 2 TageKatey Germain
As a barber, it's extremely strange and sad to me that the face shave would be that hard unless they were new or actively avoid doing them cuz they're scared. They're typically very relaxing to me to do, with the hot towels and tea tree smell wafting with the hot lather. I've even done several head shaves, and I've only been a barber for about 5 months
