A few airplanes are not presented on our radar due to lack of ADSB data so the airspace was busier than it looks here. Good job on IWA TWR for helping the pilot and guide him down safe!

To everyone shitting on the traffic controller: this isnt a customer service job. He saved this student pilots life and that's what's important. Clearly the pilot was nervous and needed some firm instructions. Did he kick your dog?

@Patrol Mars Good policy, which is what I do, too. Just remember, that even experts can have incorrect or biased opinions about something. They’re not wrong. They’re not right, either. These same people probably would have done a worse job had they actually would have been in that situation.

@Troy Jollimore well I am a couch pilot so I trust all the people with real experience here who are telling that he did a very bad a job. It also aligns with my experience with people too. There was a clearly confused, stressed and inexperienced pilot. He was give rather confusing directions and then scolded for doing the wrong thing. How on earth did the controller handle it well? "allowed to be humans" - having empathy would have been human but letting things get on your nerves is actually is something very much not desired on that job.

Poorly handled by ATC. Regardless of if you think he should be there are not, he is there and he is scared. Nothing positive or helpful gained by letting anger show.

Anxiety is a crazy thing. I have had anxiety hit me once in my life where it left me looking like an idiot, I had all the answers, knew the situation but couldn't function. Sounds like what this Student had. He knew some verbiage but his nervousness was turning into anxiety. Major bummer on that!

Does anyone know whether ATC can report a student solo pilot who appears to be out of his depth? Is there a duty to report this to the student's flight instructor? I mean, his incompetence increased ATC's workload and made him have to move a bunch of other flights around.

The student did absolutely everything correct. He realized he wasn't up for the task, admitted that to himself and then put his pride aside to ask atc for help. He could've been complying with instructions a lot quicker but to be fair here atc could've stated radar contact. This student pilot (and the controller) can be very proud of his (the student's) actions. I honestly hope the CFI thought long and well about his own actions though because this is just ridiculous. Clearly they didn't even once simuate a solo which would be insanely easy to do. You can just tell that there's never been a flight where the CFI had stayed completely silent for the entire flight.

One of the things I think could help in this situation is keeping instructions very simple, one turn at a time. At the point he is at he can only handle one instruction at a time. Saying turn right xxx to joint the left downwind for xxx is to much to handle. Dumb it down to “turn left heading 090”. Let him fly that heading until it’s appropriate to make the next turn and then tell him “turn left head 360” and so on until you get him lined up on final. Simple vectors to get him where you need him.

Agree that this kid wasn't ready BUT, IMHO ATC could have handled it a lot better by re-orienting the pilot first. Then giving him calm instructions in a helpful tone. (There are many examples of ATC helping beginner pilots right here on YouTube, done right.) Obviously English was not his mother tongue, so speaking fast didn't help. Scolding him and getting impatient made the situation worse. It was obvious that with the language barrier, clearer, slower, instructions would have been a lot more helpful. Again, IMHO from a CFI.

Ok I'm not a pilot nor an ATC but just an average guy with an interest in planes and flying. So here's what I heard from an average Joe's point of view. First. I heard a pilot who was going solo for the first time and obviously confused and probably scared. A pilot flying in a very crowded airspace. You could tell by his voice and the way he was hesitant in following up on instructions that he was confused, lost in the airspace, and totally unsure of his spot in the pattern. That in and of itself should've tipped off the ATC to the fact that he had an aircraft in his airspace that was a danger to itself and every other aircraft in the pattern. Second. In my average Joe opinion the ATC I heard was obviously rude and impatient. Either by nature or by circumstances. You could hear it in his voice and so could every other aircraft in the pattern. Whichever it was, it was very clear he was short on patience that day. Which I feel added to the solo pilots nervousness and confusion. Wether directing auto or air traffic. I feel the second you as the controller realize you have a serious, possibly fatal issue confronting you , you need to drop the rudeness, ego, and impatience. You should go into clear and protect mode. Calm , cool, and collected. Again IMO the ATC waited too long to recognize he was dealing with a problem pilot and clearing the airspace to prevent an accident. By the time he did realize it, he seemed to piss and moan about his extra work load. If you want to chew someone out of blame them because you had to do your job. There's plenty of time to do that once the crisis is over and everyone is safe. Glad everything worked out in the end but there's lessons to be learned here. Let's hope they get taught.

Its really sad to see a lot of the comments going in on the student pilot. Did he hinder the progression of traffic flow? Yes he did by not following instructions and being unaware of his surroundings. Should he be the person that gets talked down on for not being ready to fly solos yet? No he should not, of course he could have said that he doesn’t feel like he is ready yet but he probably didn’t even know himself, that it would turn out that badly. Adding to that, the nervousness most likely didn’t help either. So in conclusion the only person deserving of a telling off is the CFI for not properly recognising, that the student is not ready to fly solos yet. But that’s just my opinion.

No doubt that the student pilot should never have been released to do solo, that he was disorientated and his understanding of instructions was limited, HOWEVER, that was the situation that he was in at the time. The prime objective was to get him down safely and for the safety of other aircraft around him and people on the ground. The Controller should have recognised and assessed the situation with that prime objective in mind, and give the trainee pilot clear simple instructions to get him orientated and confident instead of talking down to him in the manner and tone he did. All involved in this incident need re-training... Including the Controller who should have known much much better how to manage a situation which thankfully ended without mishap.

I've flown GA aircraft in and out of this airport on many occasions. The really scary thing to me is that this airport has commercial airline service, as a hub for Allegiant Air. Not a good place to have this issue. I also reflect back on my own solo during my training, just a few miles down the road at the Chandler Municipal Airport. My instructor was sitting under a shade tree with a handheld watching, and listening, to me the entire time!

I don’t really remember being nervous on my first solo, just excited. I was supposed to do the traditional closed traffic two touch-and-goes and a full-stop. My instructor actually went up to the tower to watch. I don’t remember why, but on the first one I chose to do a full-stop and taxi back. I clearly remember the controller asking me if I was sure I wanted to do a full-stop because she was expecting a touch-and-go. I can only imagine my instructor rolling his eyes in the tower.

Instructor shouldn't of had him solo so early, ATC definitely should of definitely gotten him on the ground sooner and handled that a bit better. Yes I get there's a lot of factors and that it's not the controllers fault he's so unprepared, but like it or not that unprepared student pilot is up there and it's ATCs problem now, so get him down calmly before something bad happens. And the student is to blame a bit too. There's been times I've told my cfi I'm not ready for the next step, even in my commercial training and my student training, and that I would like to repeat a lesson to understand it better. Ofc he may be in one of those accelerated programs and be worried about being kicked out for not going fast enough or maybe he did say something and his CFI talked him out of it. So it's hard to blame him if either of those were the case. However nobody was hurt so that's a success, but it does need to be investigated on what went wrong.

I understand why the controller was upset, but telling the student pilot that he caused all sorts of issues was unhelpful and may have exacerbated his nervousness. The student was clearly not ready to fly solo and did the right thing by swallowing his pride and saying he was nervous and a student. If I were the ATC and really wanted to take action, I would have contacted the instructor and explained that the pilot wasn't ready to fly solo and to suggest different times when it would be less busy for the student to fly. Aviation is all about learning from past mistakes and remaining professional to help one another so everyone gets home safely. Anything else can wait until everyone is on the ground.

First point, it appears that the student was not ready to fly solo based on that brief clip. Second point, it was obvious that he needed some confidence boosting from the controller in order that he could regain control of himself and the aircraft. My personal view is that the controller might have been a little more understanding given the circumstances and in general terms the controller’s tone was more critical and admonishing which was unlikely to help the situation despite having a heavier workload as a result of the student’s actions. Having a “lost” student solo pilot who is in panic mode is nothing new.
