I can just imagine how Star Trek fans went crazy back in the 70’s, when all that you needed to know from this teaser is that “Star Trek Is Back”

cutie evee 2 the main reason is that it’s slow and boring. I do understand why not a lot of people don’t like this film but I enjoyed it. Would I say it’s a terrible film? No. Would I say it’s an ok, decent film? Definitely.

Man that trailer sucked. Couldn’t have drum up much hype for the film. To be clear I still think the Motion picture is the best Star Trek movie and most true to the show, but they could have made this look a lot more exciting. I recommend checking out the “modern trailer” for a good laugh. 🖖🏼

I loved it. No obtuse fades to black, no boring voice over spouting drivel, and no Hans Zimmer electronic farts. Hard to believe there was a time when trailer attracted audience instead of repelling it.

True story: Orson Welles, who narrated this trailer, purposely kept screwing up the line "A Robert Wise film" during the recording sessions. Welles still greatly resented Wise for what he did to THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS.

The funny thing about this teaser was that it was better than the preview that succeeded it.

I agree that the movie wasn't the finest installment and that it got too caught up in trying to replicate a kind of "2001: A Space Odyssey" scope and feel but didn't quite pull it off consistently while ignoring exactly what helped to define the original series: its characters and their place in a morality play set in space. I also agree that "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" did a better job at it ... while costing significantly less to produce and enjoyed a higher profit margin for Paramount. As for "2001" being a boring film, I don't entirely agree ... but that's me. Now I'm not saying it was the finest film ever made, but I can watch it with rapt interest. That said, I'm not going to criticize your dislike of "2001" because I can see how some people could be bored with it (minimal characters and interactions, minimal dialogue, visuals for their sake to the degree that it's the visuals which significantly dictated the pacing; as a result, the film's cuts weren't entirely economical in terms of driving the narrative forward). Also, because it's different strokes for different folks. With art, you can't satisfy everybody. With all of that said, what's up? I didn't say anything before except to point out that the teaser to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was better than the trailer, which it was.

The funny thing about the teaser and preview? They're more exciting than the actual film was! Geez, all these people who say this was the best Trek film are kidding themselves. Total B.S. Trek isn't about science fiction -- it's about the character relationships. It just happens that the setting is in space. You don't have the characters, it might as well be about something else. This was a very COLD, technical film and has been rightly derided for years. I'm glad Trek II went in a different direction. Had they done another Star Trek movie like this one, they WOULD have killed the series then and I doubt there would have been more films with the original cast or a Star Trek:TNG in the form it came in 1987. It's a joke that MrTree calls "Treks 2 - 10... overblown episodes" because Trek fans in 1979 and 1980 were calling THIS film "Where Nomad Has Gone Before" for obvious reasons. It borrowed liberally from several Star Trek episodes itself and not even the better ones to begin with! LOL No, the star of this film was the Enterprise and that's why it was a very, very boring film to sit through. Someone tried to remake 2001 and forgot THAT was a very boring film to sit through, too. I've seen three edits of this film. NONE of them is a fantastic movie.

Know what a cult phenomena Trek was in the 70's, I can just imagine the audience reactions to seeing this teaser in the theatres. And I just love the audio and visual effects in this. And Orson Welles narrating!

The best of them all. Treks 2 - 10 were overblown episodes, and Abrahms simply produced Star Wars movies disguised as Trek. Trek TMP was the only Trek film which felt like a true feature film, played like a feature film, carried the wonderous, inquisitive, curious, and adventurous spirit of Trek, and asked the audience to think, rather than feel. No wonder they kicked Roddenberry out of production for the second one: this film was too cerebral for theater audiences. Especially after the box office success of (shudder) Star Wars.  The space fantasy which ruined mainstream theatrical "Science Fiction" for the next 20 years. I was born into Trek, I was raised on Trek, and TNG was my "bread and butter" as a child of the 80s/90s.  But Trek TMP will always be my favorite film in the franchise.  :)

The more science fiction there is in a science fiction movie, the less popular it will be. Once it gets watered down to a space western, it will do very well.

TMP was a decent film. I loved the vastness of outer space and how treacherous it could be. However, it suffered from pacing issues and a great lack of character development.

They might do so for Star Trek's 50th anniversary. I imagine the original cast movies would be re-released in theaters like Star Wars.

I actually agree with that. Its not my favorite, but it did have the feel of what it would be like to be in space. What are the dangers of being in starfleet (such as the very scary transporter accident), we get the first glimpse of starfleet headquarters (its just enough to give you a hint but doesn't show THAT MUCH). It was the tone of the film that does it.

Of all the Trek films featuring the original cast, this is the only one that had the 'feeling' of being in the 23rd century. My favorite of the first six films!
