Springboard: The Secret History of the First Real Smartphone | Official trailer

  • Am Vor 3 Monate

    The VergeThe Verge

A decade before Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, a tiny team of renegades imagined and tried to build the modern smartphone. Nearly forgotten by history, a little startup called Handspring tried to make the future before it was ready. In Springboard: The Secret History of the First Real Smartphone, The Verge’s Dieter Bohn talks to the visionaries at Handspring and dives into their early successes and eventual failures.

How to watch: Springboard is now streaming worldwide. You can watch it on The Verge's new app on Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Apple TV. Visit your preferred streaming device’s app store and search for The Verge or learn more here: bit.ly/3ligPqM

The Verge continues to be my ultimate source of editorial tech content. I come for the reviews, I stay for the investigative journalism. I would gladly pay to watch a Verge TV channel or documentaries like this. Take my goddam money and keep doing what you're doing.

I hope the irony is not lost on the Verge that this documentary about how people missed that smartphones were the future of computing can only be watched on a traditional TV set.

Not irony at all. They create a piece of content and then use it to encourage people to instal their TV app, while still letting you watch it on your smartphone.

I would not have made it through college without my Handspring Visor, and later the still-lovely Visor Edge with it's metal casing. Used it to keep myself organized, set alarms for each class, keep track of tasks and appointments, and of course the address book. Obviously our phones do all this now without having to dock/sync...

Curious what qualifies as a “Smart” phone? IBM Simon 1994 had a touchscreen with only 2 buttons. Grid of apps like email, calendar, send/receive faxes, notes with a stylus and more. Having said that though. I am still very interested in seeing this story. Probably more interesting. Interested what is cooking for Apple TV and why that has a delayed release.
