Dangers of being so heavy. The Boeing 777 full weight can have a minimum clean speed of 240-250 knots and that's why they later requested high speed climb. Good call on pilots and glad they recovered safely.

dear friends, modern automated ATC systems allow you to see the ground speed of the aircraft, true and air, which allows you to evaluate the actions of the pilot if he has iced air pressure receivers and the pilot mistakenly perceives a drop in speed, for example, performing a flight in the clouds, increasing the thrust of the engines. An example is the fall of the AN-148, when the pilots accelerated the plane to a speed of 800 km / h, not realizing that the air pressure receivers were iced. At the same time, they did not report the situation to the ATC, which could help by informing about the true flight speed.

I understand that later an airspeed indicator error was found? They lost altitude because you have to push the nose over and give her some power to build speed, but they lost 300'. Years ago, I was messing with a 727 in a Link Singer simulator and the instructor told me to stall it. I remember the horn and the stick shaker, but I don't remember exactly what we lost, but it was an ungodly amount of altitude before I got out of the stall. I stalled it clean I remember that. Not knowing the config of the 777, is that an expected amount of altitude to lose from a stall?

The 777 is highly automated. The stall warning will sound before any actual aerodynamic wing stall. Once in a stall condition the nose should only be lowered a few degrees in order to recover. Adding thrust may make the stall worse as it gives an upward pitch. There is no need to trade altitude for speed in this aircraft.

Someone please explain: Why would other pilots continue calling in on the radio when it was clear there was a fellow aviator in distress? And after ATC tells the first pilot to standby, why wouldn’t other pilots pick up on that and stay off the radio? Do they not listen to the radio? I have nearly 40 years as a cop. I liken this situation to an officer calling in on the radio that he is in a dangerous situation. In our profession, we expect and demand other officers to listen to the radio and stay OFF the air until the situation is resolved. Why do pilots not do the same? Yes, I know the other pilots are still flying, which is dangerous. But the same holds true for police officers; we’re still responding to dangerous calls and are alert enough to handle business off the air, and leave the frequency open to the officer(s) in distress. Why don’t/can’t pilots do the same?

Quick questions to any aviators. At 3k going to 4k, assuming the AP was on, why did the AP not immediately take over thrust control and firewall the throttles. Also why did the automatic protections not pull the nose down? Does the 777 have the same automatic Fly By Wire protections as Airbus aircraft ? Thanks

Pardon my basic explanation, as I'm a very junior pilot (a while away from getting a license) A stall is where the critical angle of attack is exceeded and the wing stops generating lift, causing the aircraft to drop. Once recovered they can continue onwards to their destination.

wind shear surely can create a stall instantly?

Vor 3 Monate
Dwayne VanMeerten
Dwayne VanMeerten

It's really not that difficult to understand what happened. To put it simply, they exceeded or nearly exceeded the critical angle of attack. That's it. I say nearly, because most commercial airliners will annunciate a stall warning at 1.13 X Vs, not at actual Vs. A stall can happen at any speed. Standard procedure in a 777 is to takeoff with the auto-thrust on, so power was more than likely not a problem. They were flying on runway heading so the likelihood of them overbanking, loading up the wing, and therefore inducing a stall is remote. The most likely scenario was that the flaps and slats were inadvertently retracted below clean VMM speed. There is no such thing as a flap/slat retraction altitude; only an acceleration altitude. Consequently, the flaps/slats are retracted at that altitude after the airplane has accelerated to clean VMM. Speed drives the flap/slat retraction schedule, not altitude. You don't retract the flaps/slats and then accelerate. The speed limit is 250 knots below 10,000 MSL OR VMM for your given gross weight, whichever is greater. Therefore, it is unnecessary to ask ATC for a "fast climbout". ATC is well aware of the performance capabilities of various aircraft. It is assumed that a transport aircraft in the heavy or super category may need to exceed 250 knots due to performance reasons.

Obviously I'm being an armchair FO here, but wouldn't stick shaker have activated well before an actual loss of altitude? Could it be that they were preoccupied with the radio mishap and lost focus as a team? Also, maybe they said they were stalling even though stick shaker activated and they pitched down to regain speed.
