I’ve had the XM3’s for a few years now and love ‘‘em to death. These won’t be worth an upgrade for me, but I’m still astonished to see noise cancellation technology becoming even better. Can’t wait to see where noise cancellation will be when I need to buy a new pair. Sony will have a good mark in my books. pun intended.

Don’t think I’ll be buying Sony headphones ever again. They don’t last and are not reliable! My brother bought the same pair a few months before, he’s the reason I bought mine, his died around the same time mine did!
Vor TagDperr
Lucky you, my XM4s died right after the warranty and I’m pissed. Of course, nobody is willing to repair them. I was told: “Well usually headphones are throw away. So we don’t repair them here.” No clue what the hell went wrong. One day they just quit turning on. They’ll charge but I can’t use them. I could use them wired. But I didn’t pay $300 to use Bluetooth headphones with a stupid wire 😡😡😡

@Denilius123 the first one I had broke after 6 months of daily usage... After it got replaced with a new one, I was super careful with it and used it far less. It's fortunately still working without any issues after 1-1,5 years and I mostly use it at home.

As a video creator, the wired connection counts to avoid the latency. What is the sound quality, ANC performance and latency in wired mode? Anyone? Thanks!

Rocking the XM3 for a few years now. Not being able to fold this new design would be a major downgrade for me, as you said their main use is for travel so the smaller the can be folded the better. Hope they one day bring a folding design with the new upgrades. I mainly miss multi device support on my XM3 so would consider getting a new one.

Have the XM4 and am quite happy with them, the XM5 look good too. Either way: I have _noise cancelling_ headphones not really for traveling but mainly for home office usage - having sat in a bunch of loud offices in the last 15 years or so, I was always really happy to have noise cancelling (when I did)

@Amit Padhy xm4 are amazing, I kid you not, I wear them all day, only take them off to shower or sleep. I'm currently wearing them now. A good advice, whatever you do, don't forget to adjust the noise cancelling. If you don't scan your ear, you'll get a headache right away because of the pressure. To do this, simply hold the Mode button for 3 seconds and the ai will talk to you, that's it.

Just got the XM4's earlier this year and I was amazed, it felt better than bose, at least for me. Now that I see the XM5's I feel proud to have at least one of, if not the best noice canceling headphones on the market right now, especially for the price. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Not for airpods max or even bose. The design, convenience, and audio is incredible. I'm super happy with them.
Vor MonatDavid Anderson
I got the XM4s right after they came out, they were my first pair of nice headphones and I havent regretted buying them. Seeing that these came out I expected to come away jealous of the new model, but honestly if I were in the market today I would probably still buy the XM4s, especially because they are frequently on sale for like $280 and are better for traveling.

Vor 5 TageJordan Martinetti
I have the M4 version and I love them. Honestly the larger footprint from the lack of folding is a dealbreaker for me. My backpack is jammed full when I travel and being able to get the M4 folded up small is something I won't look over again.

I have the XM4s and they rock and as I work in sales I am constantly traveling and taking calls. I will say they are almost unusable for answering calls anywhere with any background noise, the mics are way too sensitive in my experience and most of the time I have to remove one side and go back to the phone speaker/mic. The XM5 units did sound much better but I couldn't tell how loud the background noise was to start with for comparison.
Vor MonatHaris V
Great review! Although I thinh the design concept of not folding is much different. Avoid crackling sounds, no tearing on mechanical joints because of constant fold and unfold and more importantly easier to carry! The latter is not so obvious, but the blueprint of the case is slight wider but thinner, because when you use it on backup thinner can save up more space that 2-3 centimeters wider, as all equipment (laptop, tablet, books) is vertically stacked

I love my 4s like they're one of the first things I've invested in for myself and saved a long time until I felt comfortable making the plung, and I'm so glad I did. But I'm very disappointed theses lost the ability to fold because the size of the 4s is so nice and I do travel and fly quite a bit. I don't think I'll be making the purchase to upgrade any time soon. Also side note am I the only one who isn't in love with the new look?

Have had the Bose QC35 for about 6 years now. Was thinking of switching to Sony since March, and then the leaks of these came out. Was worried I'd have to wait till August, but glad they're out sooner. Tbh, the folding issue never really bothered me cause I always found that folding the cups is what leads to my headphones having a reduced lifespan. As one side always breaks before the other.
Vor MonatLaTech
I bought the XM3 when the XM4 were already around for 150€ (around $150) and realized that this was an amazing deal instantly as a few months later the XM3 sold for about 200€ again (it was around Christmas by then but still) I think for people that only need these headphones for one Audio-Device (probably your Smartphone) the XM3 at a great price are the best deal you can get right now
Vor MonatDavid van der Sterre
Small but major detail about the XM4: the plastic on a very specific but important place (somewhere in the internal part of the slider) is kinda janky (at least on my headphones) and prone to breaking when stressed too much. I am pretty much always careful with (my) expensive tech, and mine still broke at that specific point. It looks as if Sony tries to fix that weak spot with this new design. The problem I have with most headphone designs is that there is some small but important point that is not reinforced good enough and is most likely the first thing to break. This design may not be more portable than the XM4/XM3, but it definetely looks like that little weak spot is fixed. And let's be real: you don't put away the headphones in the case anyways.
Vor MonatTimestatic

Great review MKB, for future audio (microphone) tests, can you please include a pair of old $20 wired line-in standard earbuds that used to come with an any Android or Apple phone? It's interesting when people feel we've come so far (for voice quality) with each new iteration of wireless headphones, and then compare it against a 10 year old pair of $20 wired line-in earbuds, it's the only way to demonstrate the vast gap between the quality of wired versus wireless of voice quality.

Still really happy with my mk4, and do not feel the need to upgrade at all. The fold and rotation of the cups is crucial for traveling (even to uni/work and back) and the sound quality and noise cancellation is so impressive already. The quality upgrade per model isn't that shocking it seems, very minor improvements. And I wonder if the thinner headband will become less comfy after wearing it for a while.

Vor Monatpocketlint82
Your fear that the thinner headband would be less comfy is a good point. Unless the new material is that much better they probably will be less comfy. The same thing is already true for the xm4. The headband is thinner, less cushy, and less comfy than the xm3. I bought the xm4 for my gf and noticed immediately they were less comfy than my xm3
Vor Monatpocketlint82

Vor MonatJens Bay
Great review! Love the sections describing how the sound experience is wearing them. That being said, I'd counter your assumption that these headphones are for travelling. I'd say there for work: Working in open offices and noisy areas can be a pain, but it becomes bearable with Sony's [currently: M3's]. They are opting out of the travellers market and focusing on the employees working in open offices :D
Vor MonatSavannah M.
I bought two pairs of the xm4s back in December on my search for the perfect noise cancelling headphones. $250 from target. I loved the sound and the noise cancelling. The creaking on the first was so bad I returned and got the second pair. The second pair creaked when I walked around and I really grappled with returning bc of the sound. I also bought Bose QC35 ii and just thought the sound was too distant. Ended up getting the Soundcore Q35 which were as close to the xm4 sound as I could find, were comfy, and cheap ($110). Just bought my mom a pair for $97. I couldn’t justify these expensive headphones having worse quality than the ankers. Maybe this new model doesn’t creak?

I've had the XM4s before and the only area they completely fell over in is the call quality. The noise cancellation (not ANC) was horrendous! I ended up selling them and bought the Bose NC 700. The XM4s did sound a little more detailed in the bass department.

Vor MonatIroAppe
@Daniel Herrera Thanks for the info! So directly over the right earcup is the hinge. Did the hinge break? Because that's one reason people say why Sony might have removed the hinge.
Vor MonatDaniel Herrera
@IroAppe So it was a physical break. Specifically, the headband right above the left ear cup. They right didn’t break and the headphones still work just fine. But I guess after years of wearing constantly, the headband gave out as I was putting them on. I’ve had them for forever though, and I wore them a LOT.

Thinking about getting these as my first pair of anc headphones. Thing is, I'm uncertain because my main use would be to block off voices(radio/tv and people), not plane or street noise. One think that i tought while watching this videos is that the cups bending outward kinda makes sense. Maybe bending inward could trigger the infrared detector and turn on the headphones, while bending out makes it less likely. But yeah, bending outward doesnt contribute to THE DRIP.

@Mister Myxpyx the Sony XM4 i have those and I agree they are awesome feature wise but comfort wise very painful. I encourage everyone to try the bose QC 45
Vor MonatMister Myxpyx
I found the XM4's more uncomfortable than the XM3's for one reason: the headband. For some reason Sony decided to narrow the band on top, and use a sharp wedge of foam inside that cuts into your scalp (if you don't have a lot of hair). This leaves a red line on your head, and actually hurts over time. The previous model had a wider, flatter piece of foam, and was more comfortable.
Vor MonatMor M21
@User yeah I guess it depends on ears , for me the QC 45 has been incredibly comfortable

@Mor M21 Bose NC gives me the blocked ear feel and that makes me feel a bit nauseous/dizzy for some reason. I don’t seem to get that with my Sony (I used to think all NC headphones weren’t for me until I tried the Sony). They’re so comfortable from both how it sits on your ear to the NC being natural.

I agree with this review BUT, as an iPhone user they still sound great. I normally use a pair of planar magnetic headphones so to be honest both XM4 and XM5 do a great job of audio but things still don’t seem distinguished. The XM5 has a MUCH better ANC than the XM4. Audio is much clearer and the bass from the drivers still bump. I have both XM4 and XM5 and can say I use the XM5 more so for the audio and ANC. For comfort both are good, XM4 sits nice and snug but for people with larger ears the XM5 has more ear room. To add on the nit pick, I don’t like that the earcups rotate up. There’s more room in the earcups which is fine but it feels more airy. Also for some odd reason on iPhone it’s either too loud or not loud enough, whereas my XM4 is perfect.

XM3s have been on my head 24/7 when not charging and when I'm not sleeping for 4 years now. They are fairly worn out been to beaches the gym birthday parties nights out, a pro wrestling show on road trips, etc. They are already pretty amazing and the xm5 might be a big enough jump for me to move up. The leather on my ear cups is wearing off but comfort is still on point but the headphones don't cling to your head the same and the ear cut rotation is much less rigid. Have no major complaints. Battery life is down closer to 18 hours now but that is near constant use. 90% of my charging was done with the headphones at 10-20% always

I have the OG XM3's and they have been a great headphone. Sony tends to launch their products at relatively high prices but after a while the prices would usually take a sharp fall and go stable for a while 🤣, the WF1000xm4s in my country launched at 295usd but now it can be purchased under 200. Besides WH1000Xm4s are really good, I've been using mine for more than one year and a half. They are much more durable than I expected and from personal experience their sound quality may be the best in noise-cancelling headphones. The noise cancelling is just good enough for me. I haven't tried xm5 yet but I don't think there will be any advantage in sound quality worth the extra price

Still enjoying my XM3's up until now. And it's still rock and impressive other than other brands.

I think i'll hold onto my XM3s. Still going strong with minimal wear on the earcups/headband

Listening to this on my XM3, and feeling so happy for choosing them and not waiting for the XM5 (back in Nov 2021). I chose this model after trying on the XM4 and not feeling any feelings while listening to the music. I was not feeling immersed, transported into the song, but with XM3 I do get that! Not sure where the XM5 stands for this aspect, but I hope it's better than XM4. :)
Vor MonatgameboyTTV
I have the XM3 and they still blow me away. Favorite headphones I have ever owned.

M3 and M4 weakest points were the folding hinges, you can find a tone of sets on the used market with broken hinges. Sony had to fix this and their solution was to remove the folding hinges entirely. I don't blame them for that
Vor MonatHissashi Rocha
I had this problem after one year using my XM3 and I promised myself I would only buy another one if Sony changed the design. So happy they did it with the XM5!

@Mastro iTek You're not wrong, but hopefully it will provide a learning experience for what improvements they can make going forward. Interested to see how epic the XM7's will be haha
Vor 12 TageMastro iTek
@Archus yes, but to reach that "0 failure rate" you remove an important feature, that is how apple operates... And doing a hinge with low failure rate is not impossible, just look up the PXC 550, they have great durable hinges. Getting rid of a feature just because they don't want to deal with the problem is the lazy way to "solve" problems. Btw, this model also costs more than the M4, right?
Vor MonatAndre M
Yep the hinges are terrible on the M3 and M4. Also the constant creaking and noises the hinges making is annoying as hell when trying to listen to acoustic music or podcasts. Hoping that the M5s don't creak at all. Easy upgrade if so.

I had the XM4’s until they went kaput after almost year. I switched to the Sennheiser Momentum 3’s (on sale) and while they sound great, the noise cancelling is mediocre. I’ll definitely give these a shot once they go on sale. I really miss Sony’s amazing noise cancelling.

Interested to know if the build quality has improved in the XM5's. The swivel in the XM4's are too fragile.
Vor Monatisnil8
Nop, WH xm5 have not enough features to make me upgrade from the XM4, absolutely love them, the folding feature makes them even greater when on the go for such a big pair of headphones, they still look and feel great.

Vor MonatJoost Mag Het Weten
As someone who owns the 4s and has tried the 3 as well as having the wf-3's I can confidently say that the 3's kind of suck compared to the 4 and if the 5 is even a portion of that jump then trust me it's worth it
Vor Monatast5515
@BelacanBreed I don't get it. Why is this strange? It's not like they only click when I put them on. They click literally every 3 seconds as I move my head. And yes, I returned them AGAIN, this time for a refund instead of a replacement. I used a bunch of headphones for 10 months for free. Thanks Sony.

I have XM4s, and what I would really need to see to upgrade is: - Be able to use them while charging. - Dual-band bluetooth (i.e. use headset in music mode and headset mode at the same time, for gaming), theres no reason I should need to keep an entire extra dongle or microphone around when the hardware has more than enough bandwidth for hi-res audio and a hi-res audio stream.
Vor MonatSrinivas Tantry
@yyyyyeeeee The Poly Voyager Focus 2 might work for what you want to do. It has a USB adapter to connect with PC for high quality calls. Plus it can connect to phone via Bluetooth. And it can be connected to PC and phone simultaneously. So you can alternate your audio source between PC and phone without having to connect and disconnect repeatedly. Also, Jabra does something similar with their Evolve and Evolve2 85 that come with the Jabra Link Adapter
Vor MonatMic Glou
@Undecided Yeah so? There will still be moments it's not charged but you'd still want to listen to music.
Vor MonatUndecided
@Mic Glou The battery life is 30+ hours, though.

@Michael Steshenko I was talking specifically about wireless 2.4G headsets, of course wired headsets are going to have less latency. Many headsets advertise ~25Ms. Of course it wont be good for competitive gaming, it would be a convenience feature. IDGAF about ranked games.
Vor MonatPaul Roggan
@Michael Steshenko dunno since Bluetooth 5.0 its about the same as wired to me atleast
Vor MonatAdminAnonymous
For the cups pivoting out. This was an intentional design decision. The touch sensitive caps brushing up against users cheeks and restarting music was an issue. However since lay flat when around the neck is important, they flipped it. Nobody really likes the look, but the functionality was improved so doing so was a viable option.
Vor 13 TageAl Junaibi

My XM4 m’s were the best headphones I’ve ever had since they were my first true pair if noise cancellation headphones. Had them for about 1 year and half until the right join for the cup got disconnected. Idk how to to fix it so now I’m tempted to upgrade 🥲
Vor MonatChristian Bucic
The folding one is like the version 4th before the new 5th one, the folding part is broken easily when you fold and unfold, I think it's one of the reasons why that's the major thing they change also.
Vor MonatMainVane
I'm a long haul trucker and the XM4's are hands down fantastic. Loud diesel engine, road noise - gone. Still some buffering with the window down but that's to be expected

I think it is time for me to upgrade. I've been using my XM2 since 6-7 years now. By far my favorite piece of tech I've ever owned. I use them heavily and they still work great. The ear cushions are finally starting to wither down which is expected, especially because I wear glasses all the time.

Since I always have my XM3s with me when I'm out of the house, I've fallen in love with their ability to fold flat on my chest. When I'm with friends, I fold it up and they barely fit into my jacket's pocket. Seeing this new design remove both of those features is such a shame!

Well considering my wh1000xm4 just broke precisely because of that folding functionality after 6 months , I'd say it's probably a good idea to scrap that functionality in exchange for durability, which is also good for decreasing e-waste.

My takeaway from this video, which seems like a no-brainer, is to get the MK4s. I like the new aesthetic design but it seems like you get more functionality with the mk4s.
Vor 13 TageRadovan Nemcik
I have my XM2s for good 4 years now. During those years I used them quite frequently and they still sound perfect and ANC is still very powerful. Battery life came down to about 20 hours, which is still fine with me. Even after these years, the foldable hinges work just fine. And long charge time through Micro USB port is not a big deal for me, therefore after 4 years I am still very much enjoying them and I am not planning to replace these. Only thing I had ti replace were the ear cushions, but that applies to all over ear headphones with long-term use. Therefore if you consider buying mark 5, 4 or even 3, just go for it, they won't let you down.
Vor MonatCameron Avelino Melia

Same, but something happened with electronics and from time to time it becomes make high pitch noise, very very loud. Currently, I am using it without a battery at all :( Also, I change the pads to the new ones. MK5 can be good enough but MK4 also looks a good option for an upgrade. I should check the size of my bag...

Vor MonatJ Cruz
Was looking forward to this upgrade and it is a downer to know that the cups don't twist for storage and just sitting on your neck. My XM4s still work with no issues so I guess I'll stick with it for now.
Vor 27 TageSandro Mathys
Owned the M2, M3 and M4, so yea, small-ish updates to the noise cancelling and such have always been worth it to me. And I would definitely get the M5 as well. But not being able to fold them as compactly anymore? Not being able to fold the ear cups fully down anymore when you have them around your neck? That's definitely two deal breakers. The new bag is kinda cool, but way too big. The cable compartment is a good idea, but I never had those cables with me anyway (or, on linger trips, I have a wall charger and several cables in my luggage anyway). And I hardly ever put them in the bag anyway, I just throw them in my backpack. Guess I'll have to hope they make the M6 properly foldable again.
Vor MonatMuthu Lakshman
@IkBenAnders they inspired from Surface headphones/airpods max and Bose, Sony should have been following their standards, this year they messed up a bit

I had the 1st generation of that and it was the best But I have noticed after getting the M4, comparing with the M3 noise cancellation in the M3 much better than m4 I don't know if there is something to adjust, I think I will downgrade to the M3 Looking forward to try the new one!
