@Devin Niemela【𝟒𝟒𝟑 】𝟓𝟖𝟒-𝟔𝟒𝟎𝟏 Could the plastic radiator cap and it's location result in coolant loss and engine damage/failure? Will the problem be solved if we replace the cap with a aftermarket metal cap or not? I am considering buying this vehicle. Would this issue be a deal breaker? Is the radiator cap in the same location in "non-turbo/naturally aspirated" engine setup also?

One of the best reviews on a vehicle I have watched yet! The open backing plates do invite small rocks to get in and squeal. It did in my older Mazda 3 anyway. The cladding is nice if you drive on gravel or have to go through tar on roads.

I'm definitely looking forward to the hybrid version. If I can find one in stock without the ridiculous dealer markups I see for the Rav4 hybrid, then I might just buy one to park next to my wife's future 2023 Lexus RX350h... if that Lexus shows up in our driveway by next spring I will be pleasantly surprised. Thank goodness our current vehicles are in good shape.

I appreciate your comment about Mazda automatic transmissions.. It’s one of the best on the market for their price ranges. And I agree with you that every other auto maker should just do the same thing. Honda for example tweak their CVT almost every year, makes it “simulate gears” and all those gimmicks. No one still likes those, thats why they keep changing it. Makes me wish Mazda to just make their transmissions available for sale for other manufacturers.

Agree with you on 100%. Old dependable automatic transmission more reliable than new CVT crap, but some people's doesn't understand that, like this guy from comment up here. They will save about 1mpg but they will pay thousands dollars to replace they CVT crap right after their warranty will end, and all the time they will listen to this terrible constant sound of a roaring engine when picking up speed with CVT 😆. New turbo engines and CVT transmissions this is the main reason for me to stay away from new Hondas. I guess Mazda can take the same 8 speed automatic transmission like on new RAV4, they are good.

Great review especially of the interior. Yes this is Lexus /Acura quality. Love the simplicity of the button layout. You don’t have to go into the infotainment system to turn on the HVAC etc. leather seats and dash look amazing. 20 inch rims is overkill. Minimal rubber w thin sidewalls definitely gives a too bumpy ride. 17 inch rims would be great. A Ford Mustang Mach 1 has 19 inch rims ! 20 inch rims do not belong on this Mazda. I’m happy w my 2002 Lexus ES300 but if I was in the market for a car a Mazda would be right up there w Lexus/Toyota.

Something that people do not think of, is the turbo built stronger or reinforced in any way for the extra wear and tear that will happen over time? I have never read anything about that. Also, since I own one but not a turbo, when it shifts under moderate acceleration from 1st to 2nd it jerks a bit because of that electric gizmo in the transmission that locks up the drive. I still love the car.

Great detailed video as with your other videos (I started watching you regarding Toyotas). I've really liked Mazdas for decades, always innovative and with a fun driving experience. Love their Skyactiv approach to overall design as well. I apologize if I missed you mentioning it for this new model, but it sounds like this is the same air-to-air cooled turbo and not an air-too-liquid cooled turbo, correct? Which of their models have the air-to-air cooled turbo? I presume a forthcoming CX-70 might have it, and I'm guessing that the CX-9 has it.

Thank you for reading my comment and your reply (I understand I'm to call you at the 443... number or was I to email you @CarCare... As an option, I could always contact at nearby Mazda dealer or my boss who I've worked with for +20 yrs. who owns 6 different Mazdas from different eras which he keeps in "showroom" condition (he loves them). On a side note, I own a 202 Chevy 2500HD with a naturally aspirated 6.6L Gas engine made of a cast iron block, etc, etc,. mated to their beefed up reliable history 6L90 6 spd. Both have been functioning so well (smooth and quiet); love it. With its new architecture (chassis, motor and trannie), I think it could run for hundreds of thousands of miles/kms with little to no major issues somewhat like a Toyota (achieving 16-17.5 mpg US Hwy. unloaded in spring/summer). I also love many of the features like the standard 6'10" box with exterior side steps, the G80 mechanical locker (simple system), the GM designed robust Side Mounted Bed Storage Boxes I purchased for each side (fit over the wheel wells) and the +3000 payload capacity. A truck a Toyota owner should consider if they need an HD truck. I've subscribed to your channel and plan to keep watching your channel, even for reviews of other SUVs/Wagons like the Subaru Forester and Outback (and their 2.4L turbo version). Two months into owing fully loaded CX50 - $43k. Great sound system from Bose, Gorgeous look - I think it is one of the best looking SUV competing only with '22 Acura MDX. Other than that - it is very poorly made car. Very thin, water based paint that chips very easily - my car never seen highway and I already have several stone chips on the front. Very weak AC system struggling with 80F + weather! Brakes' dust same as from my neighbor's Dodge Hellcat! All plastic panels are moving upon a press and all 4 doors have very hallow- cheap sound when being closed. Transmission is set for performance rather than fuel economy so usually high revs are maintained. This translates into poor fuel economy given it is 4 cylinder engine. Turbo compressor is mounted in the back - making any service a nightmare. Engine bay runs really hot! After any drive - outside painted panels are hot to touch. all plastics inside get too hot to touch. This will not be reliable car for sure. We also have 2021 Lexus NX and 2022 Lexus IS350, both of which are built several standards above Mazda. Long story short - I am on a waiting list for 2023 Lexus NX F Sport...Sorry Mazda - pick up your game!

Took one for a test drive last night was extremely impressed, handled very well lots of power, couple of things I didn't care for, and reading comments from other owners kind of concerned me, gas mileage is much less than stated, talking about the turbo model most people are getting less than 22 miles per gallon combined, that's kind of lackluster in my opinion, interior is a little bit boring, having a lot of issues with the wireless charging I've heard, no ambient lighting anywhere so the entire interior is dark at night why they would leave out something like that is beyond me, some people complain about the old school suspension, but I thought it handled and rode reasonably well, I agree with you on the points that you made, especially with the screen being so far away, all in all I do think it's a decent vehicle and the fit and finish seems to be very good, if they could just fix a couple of few things that would be great, but as you said I think a hybrid model would definitely push it over the edge to be even better!

@Gamerrr72 I appreciate that. I did not buy the CX-50 for outdoor capabilities. I have a Ford F-150 but I don’t really go off-road where I live is a big city and I’m busy with work and school and other priorities. The seats feel good to me but I’m tall and narrow built. Some say the seats feel narrow. I wish the center console was slightly bigger to hold all of my crap and my gun, no big deal tho I carry a bag. The glove box is no longer lined with felt, but no big deal. There is money put in areas that I didn’t expect. There is LED interior lighting all over. A lot of 2022 models still use incandescent but again no big deal. A few of the moving parts like the sun glass holder in the ceiling have a more definitive click and smoother opening and over better feel than my other 2 Mazdas have has recently. There are just small details. I wish Mazda would stop with the piano black guys plastic around the high traffic shifter area on the console because it scratches if you look at it wrong as you may know. But the door pockets are generous. The stitching looks a cut above. The cargo area is finished nicely. And the panoramic roof is smooth and looks nice. I appreciate the spare tire and I appreciate indicator lights on the turn signal stalk. Mine was ordered and it came in Wednesday. It had 3 miles when I drive it home. It now has 15 miles on it. I chose Poly Metal gray with Terra Cotta leather. It’s a 3 year lease. I always lease. I have the turbo model this time. So far it’s what I expected.

i got the CX9 over the Highlander bec. of that darned idle-stop/auto start-stop. the highlander drove rougher, even with the 8spd transmission, and the CX9 just handled/handles so much better. i did opt for the bench 2nd row seats as it's more useful. and, i have to say, the CX9 was quieter than the Highlander. that puzzled me the most.

My wife has a Mazda CX-5 Turbo and I never thought I'd like it so much. In fact I LOVE it! I love how zippy and quick it is, I love how efficient and comfortable for our road trips it is. I love the feel of a BMW or Lexus inside but cheaper than a Toyota which I have to say they've gotten a little too expensive plus they nickel and dime you on options. With Mazda, the options are limited which means the top tier model comes fully loaded like the old days unlike other manufacturers that even if you get the top model leave a lot of options out. I also love that the engine, transmission have been proven to be reliable. I can't wait for them to switch to RWD platform so I can get one. I'm even looking forward to the Hybrid cause I don't like electric cars.

6 speed is the perfect number of gears for a engaging everyday car. 6-7 speeds for a sports car that will see some track from time to time. I will take a well done DCTs anyday. The feel of my foot directly connected to the drive wheel is a great feeling. I had one on my CC and it it was plenty smooth around town and for touring. It was even better when you need to add some spice to a boring day. The issue is most mass market DCTs are done poorly. Lots of tuning time is needed when there isn't a fluid coupling to absorb poorly tuning behavior. Additionally, people are just not use to the feel of manual engagement and have indecisive throttle control. Indecisive throttle applocation doesn't feel great with a manual either. It will be no different on a DCT.

We bought a 2023 CX50 Turbo Premium. It has about 500 miles now. We didn’t get the Premium Plus, because we live in Texas and we don’t need the heated seats in the back and we didn’t care for the all around view. This car is driven primarily by my wife. Her old car was a 2017 Honda Accord Touring with the V6 engine. Before that she drove a Lexus IS350. My wife really likes this Mazda. She likes the exterior and interior and you are right, the interior is more Lexus than Toyota. She has no problems with the infotainment neither. She loves how easily this car accelerates too. Negatives about this car. I find the highway ride to be much noisier than the Honda. I wish it had more cubbies in the interior and a little bit bigger backseats. Probably, because the Honda had huge seats. Yes, the suspension does ride stiffer, but it handle bumps much better than the Honda. The IS350 had even harder suspension and when we hit a bump hard it sounded really bad on the Lexus. So, we don’t mind the suspension. In general we are very happy with the car, even though it has a higher sticker price than a typical RAV4 or CRV, but the Mazda just feels more premium. For a few thousands more you get so much more.

@Dilakshan DK generally speaking, Toyota, Honda, Subaru and Mazda have decent reliability. Yet, my wife's last Accord had AC problems with 31k. So, at times it all depends on your luck. The turbo version has more parts than the non turbo. But nowadays is almost impossible to not get a turbo car. The non turbo is too slow for how my wife needs, so it's the turbo for her.

Vor Monat
John L
John L

@Dilakshan DK depends what needs you may have. If you like a sportier feel and don't mind a little less room, then it is a good choice. The turbo makes it fast for this segment too. You should also consider the CX-5 because it is similar, but with less ground clearance but thousands cheaper. We just liked how the CX50 looked and didn't like how the CX-5 looked. On the other hand, if you want a comfortable ride with more space and don't care as much for the driving dynamics then there are many other options like the RAV4, CR-V or the Forrester. We love the exterior looks, the extra ground clearance, nicer interior than competitors and the turbo engine. In the end it's a personal choice, but i will generally recommend it as long as you know it has shortcomings. I hope that helps.

Even my base model 1988 Mazda 323 hatch (disguised as a Mercury Tracer) had independent rear suspension. 🤨 Buyers would do well to wait for the Hybrid drivetrain supplied by Toyota though you have to wonder how Toyota can supply Mazda with hybrid components when they can barely supply themselves 🤔

This is a nicely looking compact crossover. As to “should I buy this car”, it’s my choice #4 among compact crossovers after Subaru Outback, Forester and 2023 Kia Sportage. CX-50 pros: regular engine and transmission, nice look. Cons: suspension, rough ride, cheap interior (it looks like Toyota RAV4 but it’s not as functional). I test drove and examined all these four (and a few other competitors as well). The Outback won hands down.

@cruiseadmiral what an excellent review! Not sure if you will see this comment. It has been a while. I own GLC 300 2017. What a piece of crap. Well, I need to be fair. It did not give me any headache until last week when I got a message: Collision Preventive Assist Plus Inoperative. We cannot even tow it to the mechanic as the gear stock in parking. The guy is coming with a dolly tomorrow and crossing my fingers and toes, it will get its way to the shop. Won’t know what it will cost me to repair but already planning to sell it and buy another car. Was looking at Subaru Forester and Lexus RX. I know, totally two different cars and I hate to pay that much money but after driving GLC for 5 years, all other cars fail. I did not test drive Forester yet and was not looking at Outback. But will add it to the list. I am getting older and wiser hopefully so luxury is nice but I hate car payment so will try all my best to settle with reliable, simple car. We are moving to NC mountains in few years so AWD is a must :) your review is very helpful and detailed. Thanks again!

You are welcome. Yes, choosing a new car may be confusing. I was in your shoes last year. I needed a new compact crossover to replace my old and loveliest Honda CR-V. After three Hondas in the past, I could be a happy buyer with the 2021 CR-V but……. CVT+turbo=NO CR-V. So I started my research. I was an anti-CVT person at that time. I was not because I new something terrible from the first hand experience. I was (as many other) under “pressure” of social media popular opinion of CVT being unreliable. So I was trying to avoid CVTs just to be on the safe side. My study revealed a fact that all CVT are NOT the same. You can easily tell from my text that English is my second language. So the Eastern Europe automotive media space was the area of my research as well, with the focus on real owners’ stories. This is why I made an exception for Subaru CVTs and included the Outback and the Forester in my list of candidates. Another reason for that was the car of my closest friend and colleague (we use our cars for work and make 20 000 miles annually on snow & salt). My friend’s previous generation Forester had been 5 years old by that time with no complaints. I had been a kind of a Honda guy but… after tragic exclusion of CR-V I started from fresh: no preferences, no bias - just a desire to invest my hard earned $30K into a new compact crossover that wouldn’t be much worse than my old CR-V! So… the nominees were Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Santa Fe - the smallest mid-size crossover, Subaru Outback, Subaru Forester, VW Tiguan, Nissan X-Trail. Excluded without consideration: Mitsubishi Outlander (the ugliest looking car, JaTCo CVT). Excluded after examination at dealership: VW Tiguan (turbo engine, reliability below Japanese cars) and Nissan X-Trail (JaTCo CVT, safety score is only 4* while all other crossovers have 5*). The reality is: we don’t buy just a CVT or a regular transmission - we buy the whole car that has a lot more to evaluate and take into consideration besides the type of the engine, etc. Long story short… Mazda CX-5 failed due to limited leg room. To be more specific: while being adjusted to higher position, the driver’s seat goes up and too FORWARD thus cutting legroom off. The attractive point was regular engine & regular transmission. I was ready to close my eyes to limited space for the second row, small trunk, dead boring (soap case like) external look from the rear, ridiculous popping up screen. Toyota RAV4 was almost bought but was finally put off after two test drives due to unbearable engine noise. Interior wise, With the exception for the “Mazda-style” awkward screen in the middle, Toyota’s explicitly modest (materials quality) driver’s space was descent, with convenient nooks and crannies. The Outback won its micro duel vs Forester as Outback was visibly a more comfortable crossover. And finally, after stepping over anti-CVT paranoia: Outback! By the time of delivery of my Outback I had a plan for some tuning: new wheels, chrome removal and.. 1.3” lift. But where is the Mazda CX-50 in this context? “Cruiseadmiral” is my main channel that is about travel (ships, airplanes, cars) and creativity. My second channel in Russian is about the same content. It’s called “Все на пароход!” (Vse na parohod!) that means All aboard the steamer! Take a moment to copy and enter this into YouTube search, and see the channel. You’ll find a 1 hour 45 min video of Mazda CX-50 in the most profound comparison with CX-5 in the net. It me about a month to create this video (includes three different trims of CX-50). You will find a few videos of my Subaru Outback - my initial approach to understanding Subaru and the last video - a 1 hour 30 min film - the first part of the most thorough review of the Outback ever published. Unfortunately it’s in Russian but the visualization itself can give you quite a lot. This work took me months, and I continue to work on it. My problem - limited free time. I’m busy at work. The English version of all reviews are in my plans, but God knows when. I have enough material for a comparison CX-50 vs Outback. Why do I continue my research and reviews AFTER purchasing a new car? I am building for myself a “map” of the top compact crossovers to understand where my car is on it. That’s why I spent a month on CX-50. I also test drive the new KIA Sportage, and took tons of pictures and video. I refreshed the Tucson. I test drive both Wildernesses (Outback and Forester). My review of the Forester Wilderness is on the other channel. So my method is not just words in comments but first hand experience, study, and reviews from a BYER’S prospective. Another stimulus is prolific “reviews” by dealerships beggars - those that jump at every new car to make money on YouTube. These lady “fast food” reviews provide no insight, they read brochures out loud, and fall in love with their own faces. Disgusting. This channel is different. You see far more useful content and no nauseating grimacing. Respect! That said, I am quite surprised to hear about “luxurious” interior of CX-50. Best wishes!

One thing that Mazda has ALWAYS done right is the beautiful interior design of their cars. They make average "family" cars look and feel like a luxury car. Clean lines, minimalist configurations will remind you that this is truly a CAR, and not a space shuttle cockpit with millions of buttons everywhere (unless you're into that lol).

I have both now. The word vastly is too strong, I think most would say superior and noticeable improvement. The CX-5 is quieter and a little more luxurious. The CX-50 springs and height and other changes make the CX-50 feel more natural on broken gravel and dirt surfaces. But still not vast.

Some folks(e.g. Honda /Toyota /VW loyalists) may dislike its look, its 'old school' /conventional auto tranny, its official fuel economy ratings, its low tech rear suspension, it's relative lack of interior space, its lack of touch screen and even the Mazda brand in general, etc.... However, nobody can honestly disagree that the CX50 interior is the best in its price class in terms of design, material quality and workmanship/fit & finish by a huge margin.

I love Mazda. HUGE shame they discontinued the Mazda 6. It was an incredible car for me that was also very reliable. Felt as reliable as the Camry. Their SUVs are loud, feel weird, and look strange as Mazda never really specialized in them until 2013 with the CX-5. They sure sound nice with the conventional engines and transmissions, but I won't buy another Mazda product unless its their specialized models like the Mazda 3, the 6, or the Miata. I had a 2019 CX-9. The steering made a whirring noise when making U turns. The power tailgate motor was also noisy. Very unrefined compared to Toyota, Subaru, etc. Does the CX-50 have these issues?

Vor 3 Monate

The 2 things that really bugged me with the CX-9 was the Apple CarPlay took 50-60 seconds to boot up and would regularly crash. The other thing was the torque steer in my AWD model. The AWD system was too heavily FWD biased. So much so, that I would get front wheel spin in wet weather. Never happened in my previous Highlander, MDX, RDX, or current Subaru Ascent. The CarPlay in my Ascent also works like it is suppose to.

I was just on the phone with my best friend and said I’ve had less to no trouble with Mazda over the years than even my Hondas. I would definitely not keep going back to Mazda after driving other cars. I’ve tried them all. My parents have passed down their old Mazdas to me and all have been excellent: with maintenance.

I've seen this in a few reviews and I just don't get it. 25:05, it's shocking that Mazda even made it touch screen because the entire design philosophy regarding the infotainment is reducing driver distraction. If you need to perform anything other than basic tasks you should be pulling over anyway 🤷‍♂. I don't use Apple Carplay because I use Android Auto but I imagine they're similar and I have no issue with using the rotary knob at all. You can scroll left and right and move the knob in four directions to change panes so I'm not sure what else you really need for basic tasks. Figure your shit out when you're parked, have a passenger perform the task if you have one, or accept that Mazda isn't trying to reinforce your unsafe driving habits. We like the "old-school" approach they take with things and then complain we can't hold or play with our infotainment screen in our hands while we drive 🤣.

i had a 2021 cx 30 turbo and exchanged it for the cx 50 turbo . 4500 km later my transmission has a problem. At very low speed in traffic at exactly 1000 rpm the transmission/engine jerks. also when slowing down to nearly a stop does the same thing. brought it to mazda and they aknoledged the problem but dont know what to do so theyre waiting for mazda canada to give them instructions on what to do. suspension noise at the rear sounds like a weak suspension that knocks a little on very small bumps. to be honest i bought it for the looks but i regret this purchasse and wish to get back the cx 30. the suspension is so harsh and with those 20 inch wheels its even worse, we see reviews of this car on offroad tracks and i have no idea how they can even pretend that its fun or even acceptable. just passing through a speedbump is violent enough. engine lacks so much power and i put 94 octane from petro canada.

@Bob Sacamano That's really not the case. Naturally I've tried that. There is so much time spent trying to navigate a site which is laid out totally different from any other sites you've been to, and and ea brand has so many ifs ands and buts, believe..2 minutes sounds good to support your counter, but in reality sites clicked on in Cda default to the US! And even if you put .ca at the end, a good 60% of time it will STILL send you to the US. And this is why it's so frustrating and why I raised the point here. When you see the prices even on the site all they need to do is consistently put either USD or Cdn behind the price. And it's not just cars! It's toaster ovens, diapers, bed sheet sets..you name it! It's like we're considered a third world, or worse, country. And another frustration is when people chat fuel mileage which is much more common these past couple years, rarely does anyone qualify if they're talking US gal or Cdn. There's a 20% difference! That's so much that you may as well not even mention mpg if you don't know which gallon is being discussed. But I digress, it is my problem not an Americans.

Vor 3 Monate
Bob Sacamano

@Karson You could go to the website and find out for yourself in 2 minutes.

Vor 3 Monate

A pet peeve of mine is that whenever pricing is or isn't mentioned, there is NEVER any Cdn pricing info included! I wish people would always add USD or Cdn after the price. It's not a big ask since the North American mkt vehicles are basically identical except for metric instrumentation differences which has no bearing whatsoever on how it drives or performs. It's a really significant difference. The US pays $30k. Cdns pay $43-45k. It's not just the exchange rate of say times 1.25%, it's always more like 1.5% and on top of that we have our Gouging and Screwing Tax (GST) which ranges from 5-8% depending on province which is in addition to our Provincial Sales Tax of 6-9%, they now call the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) totalling upwards of 15-18%!, compared to the US basic State by State sales tax which is.. guessing 4-9%? And of course we have A/C excise tax, tire tax, environmental tax, tax tax tax. Cdns can end up paying over $52000 bucks for a $30k vehicle the US would pay just over $32k for. And people think our healthcare, which is sorely lacking and has new user fees added every changing day, is free🙁. Want another example? Ford's Pro Lightning at $41k in the US, List in Cdn is $69k.

5:34 I wouldn't necessarily say Toyota days. It's not the same thing. Ford was both a major shareholder and a major meddler. Ford imposed a lot of tech on Mazda in what I like to refer to as the Ford parts bin. Thankfully the 2008 financial crisis was the major straw that broke the camels back, with Ford wisely pulling out of a lot of ventures and simplifying their own company from Dearborn down in their "One Ford" strategy. Pulling out of Mazda in 2010 and beyond, Mazda reinvested in itself, coming up with full clean sheeted ideas under what they terribly named, Skyactiv. This name covers everything in a holistic view. Changes included something as obvious as completely repositioning design and engineering staff to be close together physically and integrating the software they use, to coming up with completely new ways to forge ultra high tensile steel by getting inspiration from samurai sword making (methods that broke world records, that are still unbeaten by other car manufacturers). Mazda are small but it's their out of the box thinking that caught the eye of Toyota. Toyota is investing in Mazda, but unlike Ford, they're not running the show. So it's all still Mazda, with some tech swapping going on.
