✨My bite-sized story about Shepherdess' Pie and Dinner Milk Rolls✨:
What pervades me isn’t the notion that I, now into my 20s, am closer to the future than a distant but nostalgic past; it is the understanding that with me, the world around me, too, grows old and weary. The name of the dish rings a reminisce of a life I was never born to, one that I never dreamed of, yet one I found myself candidly immersed into. It’s the ‘50s. We’re still reeling from another bloody war, and I’m sat by the sky-blue walls (apparently representing freedom inside the house), newspaper in hand, and a dining table with plating readied for four. The magnificent oval bowl, and in it, mouth-watering of… cheese? Wait, potatoes! Mashed potatoes. The internet age is more than half a century away, and so I dig in without a thought for calorie count. Of course, the rest of the family doesn’t show up. I don’t know why that is, but I couldn’t care less.
With each bite, smell, gulp, and burp, I find myself becoming deeply grounded to the earth of this time, and my identity with the American soil, plundered from the Natives, becomes sentinel. I even witness, from the shrubbed backyard, erupt the American flag. Yet I’ve never been to America, and nor have I ever seen an American show based in the ‘50s.
Turns out the dish is Scottish.
