The level of corruption that has to exist in a government for something like this to be so frequent is disgusting and heartbreaking

Yeah well tell the government to stop doing it or enabling it.

As long as politicians are more preoccupied with money and power rather than the security of the citizens, nothing will change.

As someone not from the US, but who is familiar with all the issues facing your country this is the one that is most mind boggling. It genuinely seems that there is no amount of dead school children that will lead to change. And that is absolutely heart breaking. My thoughts are with the friends and families of this preventable crime.

@Angela Michelle I did say maybe there's something good I haven't seen yet. No type of shootings are "only here" either.

@Tall Guy Pictures I don't think the U.S. is especially high in "mass shootings". Depends on how you are defining it too, but I don't think any gun legislation is necessary to make schools more secure at least. I haven't heard any good gun legislation suggestions either. Maybe there's something I haven't seen yet though.
Vor 2 MonateTall Guy Pictures
@Paul Aaron I don't see any harm in making changes outside of gun legislation that could prevent specific cases like this. But it will only be serious gun reform that will impact the sheer number of mass shooting cases in the US.
Vor 2 MonatePaul Aaron
It's not about the number of dead kids. People just want to do different things about it. Sometimes, something is proposed and shot down because it's "not enough". So it's a fight between people willing to do some things, and others that only want big changes. From my perspective, conservatives say things like "lock doors, get guards, develop plans" and democrats say it's not enough. Could have easily been enough in this case.
Vor 2 MonateYami Lima
Schools are not the same. As a teacher this hits hard. Every month we do a lock down drill, every month we have students go to a hard corner, every month we sit in the dark and listen while the security guards jiggle our doors to see if we locked them and wait for the drill to be over just in case. After Parkland, I was traumatized as a teacher to go through these drills. After Parkland something needed to happen. Heck after Columbine!!!! But nothing is ever done!! Represent your people. Do something!

While I applaud Senator Chris Murphy for his impassioned speech, it has all fallen on deaf ears on the Republican side because they don't care about anything or anyone that may be an inconvenience to them and their bottom line. Begging these anti democratic , anti life traitors is not the answer but putting them on blast at a any and every opportunity is because they deserve to be humiliated and exposed publicly for their greed and self serving interests and actions.

Looks like that speech sank in and a bipartisan safer communities act which is a start is on the move up. What really needs to happen is an amendment to the 2nd amendment which removes rights to carry certain weapons unless those weapons are necessary for work. Living in Australia, I have that privilege of not needing a weapon for any reason including protection... I have a certain trust in my fellow man which us aussies have without thinking about it because we were raised to not be so dammed aggressive and if we are, we have help available at no cost. Its not an infallible system but I'd rather be here than in the states where life doesnt matter anymore.

Vor 2 MonateEscapeVelocity
@Damian There was armed security at the school. The shooter in Uvalde encountered the school district security officer, who was armed. They may have exchanged gunfire. The shooter also ran into two police officers outside the school, both of whom were injured in what was probably an exchange of gunfire. THREE armed officers did nothing to stop the shooter. After that, police gathered outside of the school for nearly an hour before they decided they had enough people to storm the building, at which point an entire classroom's worth of children had been murdered. Most schools have maybe one resource officer, if any. If you're proposing we fund a whole team of heavily armed security officers per school in America (and ignore for now how utterly dystopian and authoritarian that sounds - government security officers roaming everywhere), that'd cost tens to hundreds of billions of dollars every year and become a noticeable drag on the economy. Not to mention it doesn't solve the underlying problem of school shooters simply forcing their way in, because as it turns out in recent shootings, armed security seems just as likely to die or run away than actually stand their ground and stop a shooter.

When the UK had a school shooting 20 odd years ago we banned handguns outright. At the time I was a member of a gun club in London, which almost immediately folded after this. I liked target shooting. I liked guns, having been taught to shoot at an early age. I knew the emergency legislation that followed was more about the government being seen to take action that actual considered improvements. I also did not quibble ONE IOTA about the new ultra restrictive laws, even though we already had the most restrictive laws in the world. Why? Because no one's pleasure in making a stick go 'boom' and hitting a target is worth the life of a single child. It's not a difficult equation to solve.

@ChooChoo4U The primary issue here , is there should NEVER have been ; such easy access to a military assault rifle.!! There was no cooling off period - no set conditions for the Gun type. The young Gunman , simply purchased his weapon of choice (not unlike buying a bike) then walked out of the Shop and just days later - committed this atrocity. Bad Policing is Secondary ; should never have to confront - a Military Weapon in a School. It is not about a ban on Guns ; it's about restricting access to limit "Risk" of mass killing.
Vor 2 MonateChooChoo4U
This would not have happened had the police did their job and went in after the guy. They refused to go in and stopped parents from doing so. Some of the cops went in and got their kids but left the others. The door was also propped open by a teacher a few mins before. This is a policing and school security issue. It was completely preventable.

As a recent graduate from high school I cannot fully express my rage of this issue in America. Every month we have drills for lockdown/shooting. Every month we are told to be quiet and sit in the dark. That all changed after my freshman year. Starting my Sophomore year in high school the drill changed. They now could happen during class changes and lunch. Not only did that change, but now we had our SRO firing blanks and using a master key to open up random classroom doors and say “You’re dead”. It is terrifying to see a drill change so much in a single year. In my middle school days we had bomb threats regularly. We had about 1 every month. We would all hear someone talking over the announcements telling us to go outside and we all knew what it was about. “Oh it’s just another bomb threat that’s all.” That’s what kids would say! Middle schoolers are saying oh it’s just another bomb threat while the teachers are instructed to keep their mouths shut and not say anything. WE ALL KNEW! I am terrified that I could live in a country where I have to sit down with my spouse and have a serious conversation on whether or not we are letting our own kids go to school. I am terrified that I still have many years of college ahead of me and I could be next. There MUST be change!

Genuinely I'm so sorry for the families affected by this tragedy as I just couldn't imagine. I can't imagine! How is it we have to fear our children coming home when sending them to school. The one place supposed to be the second safest place to be? That should never be possible and our nation is the only one who is facing this becoming a trend. I pray for some kind of comfort for the ones affected by this and for the healing process to bring comfort and peace in a horrible time. I'm so sorry....

Senator Murphy has a point “What are we doing” Republicans: oh we are busy going to NRA events and promoting the use of more guns in schools in order to get enough donations for our re-elections. The senate evolved from representing states to representing money corporations greed and ego. This is sad and tragic that our government can’t pull itself togethor and pass a proper bill for gun control so the US can be like other countries in term of gun control, I would actually support something similar to Britain’s approach to gun control so nobody would need to really use guns even law enforcement just tasers and fists. I agree with Russell Brand. I think it's going to take EVERYONE to do something about this. Texas has some of the most lenient gun purchasing laws which is really stupid. It shouldn't be easy for someone like this kid to get a gun. I think people should have the right to own them, but they have to prove they can handle owning one safely. In my state you need multiple letters of recommendation, background check, etc. (layers to the whole process of just buying one). I think mental health is part of it too. It's a multi faceted problem. It takes a village to raise a child. It starts at the top but we need everyone to step up, including at the local level, to do something about it. One shooting is one too many.

You want to know the real reason there is no one action or solution that will truly ever fix this problem of violence? Because it is a culture problem, our society had been sick for far too long with broken families, poor mental health support, poverty, disenfranchisement, neglect, lack of morality and life purpose, and more. If we want change, we have to fix the culture. But that's too difficult and time-consuming (and requires mutual participation by the society) so instead we choose to continue grandstanding using empty words and empty promises.

The Firearm Owners Protection Act, which passed Congress overwhelmingly, overturned six Supreme Court rulings and numerous regulations, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most consequential gun laws of the past century and as a key political boost for the burgeoning gun rights movement. The measure allowed dealers to sell rifles, shotguns and ammunition through the mail, and, eventually, the internet. It limited federal inspections of firearms dealers while allowing them to sell guns at gun shows, which helped them grow in size and popularity. And it made it easier for private collectors to sell guns without obtaining a federal dealers' license, which would play a role in what later became known as the "gun show loophole." (It also banned machine guns, thanks to an amendment slipped in by House Democrats at the last minute.) "In 1986, the gun rights movement really came into its own when it established its power to win on the offensive," David Hardy, a conservative lawyer and author wrote in a 2011 article for the NRA. Gun rights advocates argued existing law needed to be changed because it was turning well-meaning gun owners into felons for minor record-keeping errors and innocent ignorance of complicated state laws. But as long as Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., chaired the Judiciary Committee, they knew reform had no chance. Then, in 1982, Republicans won control of the Senate and Sen. Strom Thurmond, the South Carolina conservative, took the gavel on Judiciary, and Biden became the ranking Democrat on the panel. While some liberals fought the legislation, Biden and other Democrats — including initially Kennedy, though he later opposed the bill — helped find a compromise that maintained rules on handguns while eliminating all exemptions on interstate sales or transportation of "long guns," including rifles and shotguns. "I believe the compromises that are now a part of this bill have resulted in a balanced piece of legislation that protects the rights of private gun owners while not infringing on law enforcement's ability to deal with those who misuse guns or violate laws," Biden said at the time. "During my 12 and a half years as a member of this body, I have never believed that additional gun control or federal registration of guns would reduce crime. I am convinced that a criminal who wants a firearm can get one through illegal, nontraceable, unregistered sources, with or without gun control," he continued. With support from the top members of each party on the Judiciary Committee, the panel voted unanimously to send the bill to the full Senate. John Snyder, the chief lobbyist for the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, praised Thurmond and Biden for "reaching agreement on this principle," noting at the time that they had voted "to eliminate a good 75 percent of the onerous and burdensome Gun Control Act." On the Senate floor, the bill passed by a lopsided 79-15, with a roll call that would be difficult to imagine today. Critics say the law has created backdoors for shady gun sales while tying the hands of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It's had some unforeseeable consequences as well, especially by creating a thriving online market for guns and ammo, which has at times been exploited for nefarious purposes, including by at least one mass shooter.

I’m so sick of talk. I hope Senator Murphy’s impassioned speech finds some cold hearts and leads to actual action. 💔 This current state or our country is obscene.

I'm glad someone finally spoke up. Our government can definitely do better. We look for higher leaders to want the best for us all as a whole but instead they are failing us. I don't feel they will truly understand until it hits close to home for them. I'm saddened to see so much evil and hurt happening every day when I turn on my TV or get on my phone. I have no children, and I fear to even bring a child into this world we are living in today.

I remember we did a lockdown in my high school and the students was being loud and still laughing and that's when I knew America was finished and there was more mass shootings after that. This was back in 2012.

Courageous speech and tragic situation. Until real change comes, I can no longer say I'm proud to be an American.

Probably should have lost that pride somewhere around ‘05 or at least 2016, 2020, or 2021, but ok bud

God, at Sandy Hook they had to use a code word “monkey” because these kids were mentally breaking down.

As a European this really breaks my heart, it is unimaginable to think of this kind of constant fear, constant feeling of being held hostage of politics. It seems like you're at war just not declared. It's frustrating 'cause there's no sense to that, NO EFFING SENSE.

If people go on with their lives like nothing happened than nothing will happen. If people want change people need to be out in the streets together demanding change now!

Laws would not change much when the gun culture is so entrenched. When you love something that is designed purely to hurt, it can only reciprocate the only way it knows how.

Firstly, there is a mental health epidemic in the country. You have to tackle this by funding doctors and passionate people who are into counseling and mentoring in particular the youth to help guide them towards a healthy adult life. Secondly, increase funding for schools nationwide for greater security measures to act firstly as a deterrent and secondly to provide a lethal answer to any individual that assaults a school with heavy weapons. Thirdly, increase police expenditure for better police physical standards and requirements, and more investment in to appropriate weapons to counter assault rifle wielding criminals. Increased training for close quarter combat situations which requires higher attention to overall physical and policing standards across the board. Fourth, regulate media content that promotes violence in video games, movies that are accessible to those below 18. Finally, provide an avenue for youths to increase their self discipline by joining supportive groups, eg military training camps for young men and women to build character, while helping them socialize and network among like minded youths. By using a holistic approach, we have a better chance of developing civic minded people rather than using authoritarian measures to stomp on the rights of many good civic citizens who are unnecessarily dragged into an issue they are totally innocent of.

Just so I'm very clear. Our kids along with 2 other kids were attacked on school property last year by a grown woman and a mob of kids. The adult didn't get arrested. The school was not secure and there was 0 adult supervision faculty wise. The schools are immune from being held accountable even though they are under the supervision of the school. It was cars passing by that came to the aid of our kids. It is time to end immunity for schools and hold them liable for our children while under their supervision. If we cannot afford private school or home school. We as parents are compelled by law with consequences to have our kids in school. Seriously, it is time to end the immunity and watch how fast these schools become secured when they become liable for the safety of our children. We can spend billions in foreign aid, billions securing airplanes and airports, billions securing government buildings and military installations. We all saw the photos of Washington D.C. after January 6th....Yet, we cannot property fund the security of our future which lays with the children of America. The issue is way beyond a weapon of choice.

Anger, anger, anger--most humans are not emotionally capable of accessing a gun of any kind, the only sane safe strategy is each owner / user must prove competence .

There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO ALLOW SEMI AUTOMATIC WEAPON OWNERSHIP BY ANYONE. Military weapons in the military only. And crack to balls on any weapons manufacturer's or NRA donations to House or Senate reps. This is the legislators fault.

Sen. Chris Murphy, i’m with you i know you are with us also. We are getting out of these times one way or another. & that’s in the name of God. & The power we have to stop these crimes because we are too strong and we will never let anyone do those kind of crimes again to our children. Our child are the future and there is no way we are going to allow our children to be taken at a young age when they are in school to learn to grow to gain knowledge. And that’s why that system is in place for our FUTURE. And that’s why this system will be fixed & no longer a secret. Because we must protect our kids. We must protect our families. We must protect our people. Because in this country we are united.

After the mass shooting here in Canada, NS shooting (few years ago). Government banned all assault weapons. We love our US partners & our border provinces. However, it is outrageous to me the gun laws in the USA. We don't have many mass shootings, but it has happened. Watching to news weekly or monthly in the US, it's happening each month. My family and I hearts break as we watch these horrible acts happening and no one does anything. Precious children, families. The trauma is outrageous, something one never gets over. This man is begging, and I'm guessing no one is listening, as they make billions off guns & everything that goes with it. So very very sad and heartbreaking. God bless those beautiful babies, teachers, families. ♥♥

Gun owner lover here I'm for the 2nd amendment but I don't agree that an 18yr old punk should be able to purchase these weapons. I believe to higher the age and doing a better background checks is a step in the right direction. I believe we should say something if we see something this psycho had all the red warning flags around him
