On the 27th of December 1991 an SAS MD-81 suffered a dual engine-failure only 2 minutes after takeoff from Stockholm Arlanda rwy 08.
What caused these critical failures? How did the pilots and cabincrew deal with the situation and what did the final report ultimately reveal?
That’s what we will be discussing in today’s video, Enjoy!!!

Long time ago I had compressor stall at the full afterburner in MIG21. I was inexperienced but I was lucky because it was during take off and plane was still on the ground. I noticed sudden lack of acceleration... like something obstruct my landing gear... I was still on the runway and decided to stop take off. MIG21 has parachute for breaking, so I managed to full stop before the end of a runway. I knew what compressor stall is, and even saw one compressor stall in a different type of plane, but I didn't recognized it when that happened to me. There is no knowledge if you don't experience yourself. No matter if a pilot has 500 or 5000 hours if during those 5000 hours nothing bad happened. When you experience yourself some bad thing and stay alive if similar situation appear again you have unimaginable better chances to survive the situation.

I have Always been Facinated by Air Crash Investigation. I Love the way you Walk Through the Technical, as well as the Human Aspects/Causes. A Commercial Pilot that I once worked with, once told me, "That when they Take the Pilot Out of the Cabin, and Fly Aircraft by Computor Only", he would Never Get on Another Aircraft Again... Granted, that Pilots make mistakes, that can lead to Tragic Concequences, They are Usually the Ones That Pull the Fat Out of the Fire, when Technologies Fail. Keep Up The Great Work...

Where is it you're from? Is it a Norwegian accent. My scariest flight was in North Norway. Harstad Narvik airport. Was night, the runway was constantly being cleared of snow and I've never been de-iced so much ever. I thought they were going to cancel it as I was unaware you could even take off in those co conditions but we did. Take off was fine then we we were struck by lighting and a light exploded on the wing. We then hit turbulence and I thought this must be normal till the locals started screaming and hugging each other. I hadn't seen the sun in months so it was a lovely feeling to see that appear over the horizon and realise I wasn't gonna die.

Air accidents is what got me into aviation as a hobby. A family member was a pilot who was killed at Luton. I thought turning both engines to zero thrust at 300 ft was lunacy, but after reading the accident report, and many other reports, I soon realised how complex it all was. And so easy to make a stupid mistake. I find the human elements far more fascinating than actual flight. As for the brace position, in this case it worked really well, usually it is only good for kissing your backside goodbye. Love it, better than all the rubbish tv programs.

While not exactly a cold weather wing icing problem, some of the circumstances in this crash are similar to the crash of Southern Airways 242 in New Hope, Georgia in early April 1977. The craft flew into a severe thunderstorm and both engines failed due to water and hail. Multiple bangs were reported from both engines.

I know the captain should have probably been more vocal. But he did manage to use all of his energy to successfully bring the plane down without any loss of life. Perhaps he realized the 1st officer and the other captain had already grasped the understanding of what had happened and believed they were doing what they could to help while he remained focused on bringing the plane down in the best survivable circumstances.

Very interesting, especially the problem of not fully training the flight crew on all the systems. I am not an aviator but I still have accumulated enough knowledge that when you started describing what was happening to the engines, my inner voice was saying "compressor stall!" a few seconds before you did. They were lucky there was another pilot on board who knew how to help. And praise to the cabin crew for figuring out what to do after only a few terse words from the Captain. Other than the loss of the aircraft, a very acceptable outcome.

Commending people when they do what they are suppose to do is really getting out of control. The only one who deserves a "victory lap" is the pilot who came from the back bc he didn't have to do a damn thing. Everyone else did exactly as they should and what they get paid to do. I wouldn't expect a pat on my back at my job for doing my job. Just saying.... keep the great videos coming!!!!

It almost seems like a team of three is the perfect combination. What an amazing job they did - collaboration in this case saved everyone's life - but credit given to the traveling pilot who stepped up and helped keep the pilot focused and was able to guide the first officer. ..... I understand that some airlines are now looking for single pilot capabilities- no first officer or engineer. I would sincerely hope that's not the case.

Vor Monat

I now watched quite a few videos about those situations where a pilot pulled back thrust, and then some system kicks in and regains thrust or any other system that does other things and the pilot cannot directly understand whats happening, or does not notice it at all (might be in panic or other circumstances). What is missing IMO is a system, that can do all the things, but tells it to the pilots... from my understanding a modern plane has all bells and whistles, but also sounds like bells and whistels.. Why is there not some kind of alexa thing installed that clearly says "This is the plane speaking. You have not set enough thrust - so I will! Look at that lever moving by itself!" and everything is clear. The plane will do it anyways, so why is there no way for it to communicate what it is doing except for make a green LED turn red and beep 3 times? "This is your plane speaking - it looks like engine 3 is burning.. Want to shut it down?" And that should not be a type of text-display that nobody has time or care to read in a bad situation

Great explanation of a great outcome. Re: the standard "brace position", it has long been my impression that airline crashes would be more survivable if they simply turned the seats around and face them backwards. That way the entire seat acts as a breaking force on almost the entire body, which should be far, far better than a seatbelt breaking the mass of the entire human body from only the hip area. Surely engineers have thought of this, but they don't do it. Is it a marketing / psychology type issue?

Vor 2 Monate

Realizing the odds are more than extreme that a crash will never occur, -so many it’s for economical reasons a aircraft does not have airbags. Will this ever be implemented just for safety’s sake? Holding one’s ankles clearly seems not to be enough for most to survive crashes, as most are so much harder than this. Thank You, Jesus this particular pilot was a passenger. I apologize for so many questions, but today, if such an emergency be imminent, with the cockpit locked, would a passenger who is also a pilot be allowed to gain access to the cockpit to help? Lastly, is it legal for passengers to find what happened or IS happening on a crippled aircraft? I was once on an aircraft that was ordered to return Houston after we had gotten about 75% of the way to our destination, from Texas to Colorado. After the turn around back to our initial airport we were flying so extremely low I texted my adoptive mother to watch the news and text me back if there was coverage of an airplane about to go down. I have no idea if this would even be covered on public television, but I have wondered about that about 15 years ago & just out of curiosity would love to know while we returned to our original airport.

Vor 2 Monate
Nancy Rutland

😏in understand why the 2nd captain did flaps down in landing position to slow the aircraft. At this point did he not know which field they were aiming to put down , because obviously he could have been able to slow it down, but still give it enough power to make the glide TO the field. They DID make it to the field, so was it too narrow to bring her down, hence hitting the trees? Also, Why did firefighters put foam on the aircraft? I also understand it’s procedure, but BOTH wings had been torn off. Is there an extra cavity holding more fuel? Don’t get me wrong I agree this is an extreme miracle bring the jet down with no engines. I don’t know if they get extra frost when they get up to such a high altitude. I’m from the deep South and I never heard of frost forming under the wings. I always thought it was on top but I’m not a jet pilot You just explain things so well and I’m not really clear on either of those two procedures. Thank you much sir, you are not only entertaining but quite informative.
