Sacha Baron Cohen On What Happened With The Freddie Mercury Biopic

ayf1983
ayf1983

It wouldn't have worked, because Queen would not have allowed any of their songs to be used in Cohen's version. So what you'd have is a Freddy only story about raunchy parties and stuff with no concert scenes or music. Who'd want to see that ? It'd be like that Hendrix movie with Andre 3000 where they weren't allowed to use any Hendrix songs.

Hi! I'm Sara, 28 years old and I don't like this. And here comes the why: First off I'm happy that they found Rami Malek instead. He showed everyone who Freddie was: A loving human being who just wanted to share his amazing gift to world, who wanted everyone to never be ashamed of who they are. Since this whole thing with Sascha and Queen everyone seems to be focused on the rumors around Freddie and his life. Did he do drugs? most likely, but do you honestly think the rest of the band didn't? Not even once? Do you think Freddie was the "bad guy" in the group, that he was the only one that made so called mistakes? Doubt it. There were four people in queen, you don't think they had crazy nights too? And sure I don't know and quite frankly my dear I couldn't give a damn. If you look into Freddies eyes you are gonna see so much heart and kindness, if you hear Roger and Brian talk about their bestfriend and brother, you are gonna hear wonderful stories of who Freddie really was. It makes me angry to read stories by people who have heard one thing after another "Freddie did this and Freddie did that" and so on. YOU DON'T FUCKING KNOW CAUSE MOST LIKELY YOU WEREN'T THERE SO STOP IT! If Freddie were alive today I'm sure he would have "clean his act up" (a little bit) and maybe owned a few more cats ;) I love the movie and I believe in my heart that Rami (and the rest of the cast members and crew) truly did a great job of telling the story of Queen and their legendary band member Freddie Mercury. I also think we all have a little bit of Freddie in all of us and we should all stop pretending and be whoever we are, be our true and authentic self. That is what Freddie was all about and that is what the movie celebrates! We live in a world thats becoming more and more accepting (we have a long way to go, but we are getting there), if there is ever a time to be you, its now! So Thank you Freddie Mercury for teaching me love, acceptence and being my one and true self

Sacha is certainly right about the concept of Freddie dying halfway through the movie being a horrible idea. I definitely don't agree with trying to incorporate his personal lifestyle and partying habits into the movie. The whole reason Queen was liked was for the the music and I was glad it was kept that way. I'm a big Sacha fan for his comedies, and for that reason there's no way I can picture him doing a serious role like this. Even if he somehow pulled it off perfectly, I'd still have flashback of borat, the dictator and the brothers grimm at the back of my mind and finding it difficult to take him seriously... After having seen Malek's performance, there's no way Sacha would have come close... Sometimes different castings workout just the way nature intended. This has happened in a lot of hit movies.

For those from that generation, theres no escaping that Mercury's music was only maybe outpaced by his larger then life lifestyle. Cohen would have done an amazing job at bringing that out, but it would have bordered on sexually offensive. And he was not going to do a watered down version of it.

It was a Queen project but not sold to a movie studio at the time. When they finally took it to a movie studio to be made, the end product was a movie that mimicked the life of Freddy Mercury through his time with the band. The version Cohen was talking about was the rough idea Queen had for the movie but obviously was not made cause that script wouldn't of got the financing it needed. Even still the movie Cohen wanted to make was not in the same ballpark with the universal cater to everybody version that they ended up making. Cohen wanted to present a very sexually exploitive and very unfeathered version of Mercury. There's no way Queen was going to allow that to happen.

It was a no brainer, Cohen has no problem exploiting his every being for a role and Mercury presented him with so much to work with. I've read that Cohen would have got serious Oscar buzz in that role but in the version he wanted to make, not that one the band wanted to. In the end the band didn't get the script that Cohen was talking about, but they did make a version that catered to a general audience. To Cohen's credit, he didn't want to do that type of movie.

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody, it was a fun and enjoyable movie, but a lot of historical inaccuracies that makes the movie a work of fiction rather then a biopic. I would have loved to seen Sasha Baron Cohen's version rather then Queen's sanitized version. There is a British documentary that came out a few years ago, with some acted out scenes, that is very good, that is the closest Queen fans will ever get to an honest portrayal of Freddie Mercury and Queen. One of Freddie's friends asked him in his last years how he wanted to be remembered on film, Freddie told him that they put anything and everything as long as it wasn't boring. There was no need to sanitize his life story.

Who cares if SBC is mean or kind in his real life? He's an actor he wasn't playing himself... I understand why they chose the Live Aid but i don't agree... They had 2 very important concerts to choose from: live Aid (considered the best by many, got Queen back on the map to the USA, made Queen known to a larger portion of people) and Wembley 86 (last live performance of Queen, sold out, made the whole band proud). If they wanted to make the ending with a concert i understand Live Aid but at least be honest and don't make it look like a reunion when they were on tour and had performed together 3 nights before, don't make Freddie tell the band he had aids in 1985 when he didn't even know until 1987.

+Poder do Cosmos I really don't understand "Sacha's vision". Queen is one of the most effective bands impacted the history of rock music. A movie about Queen should focus on their music and how they managed to become the legend they are. A movie that would have focused on Freddie and his wild life would have been a mistake (the same mistake Oliver Stone did on "The Doors" movie). Freddie was the leader of the band, but Queen would not have been Queen without Brian, Roger and John.
