NEW VOLCANO IN MERADALIR. Reykjavík Grapevine editor in chief, Valur Grettisson, is on the scene with a full update of how the eruption is progressing. Read on for more information and links!
A new eruption started today (3rd of August, 2022) on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the location of last year’s volcano. The fissure is about 300 metres long and is estimated to be between 5 - 10 times more powerful than the previous volcano in Geldingadalur. It is located in a valley called Meradalir and is a bit further away from roads and settlements than last year. Read more updates on our website here: grapevine.is/tag/eruption/

I love how excited Valur is about the new volcano. Not even as an Icelander is he acting all cool, as if this is no big deal. He's loving it, just like any tourists that go to see it. We love you and the rest of the Grapevine team. You've got to take Josie to see it. Stay safe!

This is the best video that I have seen of the new volcano. Excellent reporting as always -I can’t wait to see it myself in two weeks. Thank you, Art, for the wonderful drone footage at the end. That is your signature❤️
Vor 14 Tagecz
love that you hiked over and got the best views on day one despite it being a print week! thanks for a balanced report that conveys the facts and safety info along with the genuine joy and excitement at the power and beauty and danger of the fissure along with evident relief that it is in the best place to minimise risk of disruption to lives, infrastructure and homes! Shall continue following these reports with interest - please keep it up and would love to heat even more of the science. Thank you!

Thank you for the unexpected volcanocast! Once again you are able to get crazy close to an erupting volcano. Some of the best footage I’ve ever seen of the early stages of a fissure eruption when there are lots of small vents erupting simultaneously. And you were planning a week off to get the magazine out. Thanks for putting in the extra hours.

So much like being there it even feels hot through the camera - thanks for the brilliant vision, Art!

We love you, Grapevine! Valur’s joy is so wonderful. Stay safe and thanks for always updating us.

You said this would happen in Tuesday’s episode of the Grapevine. When I read of the eruption, I thought to myself “Valur was right!” Been watching it all day. It’s beautiful.

Thank you so much Valur and Art for getting in so close so early on in what looks like phase 2 of the Fargradsfjall eruption - can't wait to see where this latest journey takes us. So much like being there it even feels hot through the camera - thanks for the brilliant vision, Art!

You mad lad, you're standing 50 metres away from a new volcano! And you got to do it TWICE! You really are lucky. Even if you live on a volcanic island. Thank you for sharing it with us :D

This is so awesome! Reminds me of the Phlegraean Fields. We're seeing geology in action! This must be a field day for volcanologists.
Vor 14 TageHeidi Raatz
What a spectacle ! The lava fountains and flows are absolutely mesmerizing. Thanks so much for the reminders and cautions about hiking in and proper gear. Ppl need to pay attention to the risks. Also the geology students! So cool to hear from them and I hope you will do a follow-up interview to hear what they've learned about this latest volcano. 🌋

Valur, you guys totally stomped the competition into the lava with this one!! You got there very early in the eruption, you interviewed the scientists! BRAVO!!

I love your reports - and not only about volcanic eruptions but all things Icelandic! Watching your coverage last year was one of the main reasons I came to Iceland for the eruption and returned again in March because I love the country so much. When I heard the news yesterday, I immediately began looking at flights and possible days off from work for my third trip to Iceland.
Vor 14 Tagepj steele
I am extremely thrilled that this area has come back into action. So very excited to watch your reports once again, as eight months of not hearing from you, was driving me bonkers 🤪 Thank you, for your raw journalistic poise. 😊

This just made my day. I was so gripped by everyone's coverage of the volcano last year, and already this seems so much more spectacular. I'll be wearing my lava t-shirt I got from your shop last year to celebrate the rebirth. I've just ordered a huge load of Hraun and Omnom to eat while I watch the footage. Happy days!
Vor 14 TageBeth
Wow, you guys got there fast... and we are forever grateful! Stunning footage by Art (I'm sure.) Thank you and I am as excited as Valur... and looking at travel sites to come to Iceland soon. Thanks for the warning that it is quite a hike. Training starts today! YAY 🌋! ❤🇮🇸

Thank you for making an older Aussie feel like they're standing next to lava! I found your reporting incredible as I watched mountains forming and valleys disappear. As a child I had nightmares of volcanoes but am now learning of their beauty and fascination. 😀💚

What an incredible sight. It’s hard to estimate the distance from the eruption but Valur looks like he’s practically standing right next to the lava. The length of the fountain looks stunning. Thank you for getting to the site so quickly after it erupted.

Amazing newscast, looking forward of more videos of the volcano in the future. I followed the Grapevine videos with high interest last year and will certainly do so in the months to come. Also can I make a big compliment to your cameraman that made these amazing shots while you are talking? You're doing very good work. If this volcano follows the same pattern as the last one (which it probably will not, but hey, we can dream) we should have a fire geyser 1000m high in a couple of weeks and major outbursts of lava in 3 months from now! :D

Such a great show. Glad you didn’t bring Polly, although always love to see her. You and your crew made a great effort to get to the eruption and it certainly isn’t all that safe. We your viewers would fell terrible if either of you got hurt in order to bring us this amazing report and great video. Thank you!

Stunningly beautiful! Thank you Art for the great videography! And Valur it doesn't look like your going to have much time to relax after your vacation! Excellent coverage as usual. I'm so jealous, my cousin and her daughter are visiting in September! But I'm also very happy for them. She said she's wanted to visit ever since I told her how beautiful it was in 1969 and 1970 and on my two later trips. Stay safe out there. It looked like there was lava being thrown a further distance than you were standing from that fissure!

Thanks for going out there and doing a Newscast so soon after the eruption started - amazing images from Art and such genuinely excited reporting from Valur. This is so exciting! Remember last year when I was wondering how in the world Mt. Aso and Fujiyama in Japan, and the volcanos of the Cascades in the northwestern United States got so tall because huge chunks were frequently collapsing from Bob and Bobsdottir? Perhaps this long fissure opening is the answer. Maybe the longer fissure opening provides the base for a higher and larger volcano cone? What if this actually is just a continuation of the original Carrie Fissure from last year, just running under the carpet like an extension cord, so to speak? How wonderful! P.S. That's Mt. Ranier in Washington State behind me in my thumbnail photo from my first trip out west in 2018. Valur, give my love to Polly, won't you? A scratch behind the ears and a back ruffle, plus throw the frisbee! Thank you!
