Has the show, and our culture, reached their limit with the “lovable jerk" character type? Rick Sanchez is the mad genius anti-hero at the heart of Dan Harmon's and Justin Roiland's Adult Swim show. But over the course of the Rick and Morty's fourth season, the allure of Rick’s heartless nihilism has started to fade, and it seems like everyone in his life is leaving him behind. Morty pushes back against Rick’s cruelty before finding a new adventuring partner in Summer, and Beth teams up with her clone and realizes that she doesn’t need to live in her father’s shadow to have value. Rick’s former best friend, the planet he used to date, and a whole “story train” of fictional people all want to kill him, and he ends the season without a friend in the world. Here’s our Take on why Rick and Morty is outgrowing Rick, and what this means for the future of the show. Saying that Rick's pathology hinges on his omnipotence is a completely erroneous conclusion, fetishising death, impotence and humanity is a blatant appeal to nature fallacy, his foible lies not in his power but in his unwillingness to share his power with others, he could effectively eliminate suffering throughout the multiverse and create an eternal paradise if he were simply willing, he has already conquered death and scarcity, but it is his psychological impediment of narcissism that keeps him from harnessing his abilities for the greater good, this fundamentally selfish attitude causes him tremendous suffering because his exploitative and indifferent attitudes toward others ultimately define his relationship to himself. This video gave one specific spectacularly bad analogy in regards to Rick's ability to avoid negative consequences through ingenuity, suggesting that this capacity is somehow responsible for his sickness, but in fact the opposite is true, Rick has been unable to avoid a plethora of negative consequences, he lives in a state of constant dysphoria, as a fugitive, as a pariah, his abdication of personal responsibility in the wake of his tremendous power has caused his life to fall into disarray, in fact what all of this suggests is that ultimately Rick suffers from a cognitive deficit, technically brilliant but with a malformed self concept rooted in bias, in other words an absence of metacognition, the incapacity to engage in authentic self reflection, which is manifest in people of varying intelligences, if we are to draw a clear discernable subtext from this season it is this: intelligence and narcissism are not mutually exclusive. But the subtext of this video is something I really take issue with, the suggestion that power, in this case manifest as intelligence, is somehow inherently pathological. This is patently false, it is not the presence of power that is corruptive, but rather the absence of empathy and love. To quote MLK, “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” This ties into my earlier point about Rick's squandered potential as a force for good due to his narcissism, but this type of pathology is generally brought about by trauma and only those who are incapable of defending themselves are victimized, in other words those lacking power, this is how his empathy became fractured and malformed and why he is incapable of growth, his power is purely incidental, it is the confligration of such immense technical prowess and such psychological decrepitude that makes the show so interesting and Rick such a fascinating character.

When he battled the council of Ricks etc , that felt epic and that there would be more to it down the road. For me, since then, feels like its been downhill. I also dont like when too much of the writers bizzarre sexual proclivities come through as well as more goofier and goofier characters. I want to see him fix his original world. I wanted more about evil Morty. I like more of Rick showing he IS the smartest in the universe and more of him being crushed by the weight of it.

to the rare breeds who are still complaining that they have outgrown rick because he hasn’t developed at all as a character: the simple response to your morty-like statement is, rick is already the person he wants to be. he is the smartest man alive, and he literally is a god. that’s the whole point of the show. it’s a show based around pessimistic and narcissistic beliefs and how it is actually pretty cool. i saw a few closeted feminists complaining how rick should have ‘developed’ more, and that they’re loving the show now because rick and morty has started to outgrow rick. lmao if that’s really what you think, the show you’re looking for is “and morty”. if you like the humour but rick isn’t your cup of tea, please just leave the fan-base. please, that will be you doing a favour to yourself. if you want a show with more developing and centralised characters, watch ‘Solar Opposites’ - another show by justin roiland. it’s funny, light hearted and will curb your normie beliefs. ‘Bojack Horseman’ is another show where character development is pointy and constant. but please, for the people who enjoys rick and morty for rick and everything surrounding him, don’t bring your shitty ideas to the table.

This seasons 2nd half is *wayyy* better. I love how each character became more independant, Summer is more badass now and Morty is so much more stronger. Beth is not miserable around her father anymore and Jerry... well... he did some cool things too. But i love how rick isnt perceived as the smart god he is.

I got sick off Rick because I got sick of post-modernist humour, being cynical and nihilistic doesn't feel good and doesn't make you grow. My distaste for Rick and Morty seems to have coincided with my conscious decision to improve myself, so maybe that's why Rick's desire to avoid responsibility and meaning is so unappealing to me now. Maybe it's true that Rick is under more scrutiny this season because society is less tolerant of men behaving badly, but I think there is a lot more to it than his gender.

Vor 15 Tage
Trond Becker

As I understand it antiheros are flawed heros, but they still have redeeming qualities that by definition make them redeemable in the audiences eye otherwise we would condemn them. Rick lack of willingness to redeem himself makes him unlikeable.

Vor 15 Tage
Trond Becker
Trond Becker

It’s pretty cool how the show demonstrates that there are things we value beyond intelligence; the smartest being in the universe can’t find the meaning of life or manage his emotions. Rick lacks emotional intelligence and personal meaning, which may be a result of him becoming effectively omnipotent and immortal. Without personal meaning he seems to be a slave to all seven of the deadly sins: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth.

Vor 15 Tage
Trond Becker
Trond Becker

I think one of the other YouTube comments “we’ve outgrown rick because he hasn’t grown at all as a character”. We like stories or progression and heroism. We admire characters that demonstrate courage in the face of their biggest fears. Rick’s biggest fear is what he doesnt understand which is the meaning of life. He runs away from meaning at virtually every opportunity and only appears to confront his emotions indirectly. Perhaps this is what causes his compulsive need to go on adventures with people so that he can watch how they overcome problems.

Personally, I am not sure the show is actually condemning Rick in the long run. We saw a repentant-sounding, sad Rick at the end of Season 2, and it turned out to be fake. I wouldn't put it past the writers to do it again. I hope that's not the case because I'd like to see Rick develop and faking growth twice makes it really hard to believe any subsequent tries to get better. But, the story train episode makes a joke of the Bechdel test so I'm not sure Harmon and his staff would be super responsive to social issues (at least enough to change their plans for the characters). Whether I'm wrong or right I'm excited to see what happens in season 5.

The funny thing is that I was so glad in the last season that Morty was standing up to Rick and Rick was getting his ass kicked but at the same time I would be like oh my god please be okay lol it's at last episode when he shows this vulnerability again reminds me why I love him so much. There's so much honesty in his pain. I feel like in later Seasons he became too much of a God and Rick is at his best when he is a mad scientist that doesn't have all the answers. I guess it's why I like his vulnerable side because he can allow himself to be human again. I can't stop loving Rick there's so much about him that I love and there's no show without this guy lol

I think you totally miss the whole point of Rick being the way that he is... Now granted, I'm not on the writing team or anything, but I have every expectation that the final season is coming sooner than its fanbase would like, and will include some sort of incredibly deep double meaning, resulting in not only Rick's death, but also a scenario where the viewer realizes simultaneously that 1) Rick was intentionally sacrificing his relationships with the people he cared about to make them strong enough to survive the cruelty of the world around them after he was gone AND 2) If you can wait 18-24 months for new content, then maybe television isn't as important as you think it is and you should go out and spend more time with the people you care about while they're still around. Because Rick&Morty really is a smart show with a tremendous amount of depth that loves to make fun of people who can only see what's on the surface. But that's just my take.

Rick n Morty is deeper then all this. But it would be a mistake not to address n desk with these things. So far Rick & Morty together have taken on everything popular or valued by our culture. We can't outgrow Rick bcuz that would mean outgrowing Morty as well, they're 2 sides of the same brain. I believe in the writers n I look forward to seeing them challenge themselves with this new situation n conflict.

Rick is a dick but he was wildly popular because he always ‘won’. The creators of the show decided they would make him loose more to show that nobody should like Rick. They just needed to make that clear so all the dicks who identified with Rick would stop watching the show. It’s audience capture and this is the awkward way they broke away from it. Sad really. That was their key to success, but now that they have a 7 season contract they don’t care. The show was perfect because it was unique in the way they portray Rick as successful dick, now it’s just as stupid as the rest of the crap on TV. Hopefully Rick gets back to ‘winning’ (read as Charlie Sheen) soon. Have Rick drink some tiger blood instead of that green juice from the first episode that makes him smart. Or maybe just had him stop drinking the PC punch that makes him have to be weak with only Pyrrhic victories.

What I love most about this season is how the toxic fans who worshipped Rick's invincibility and ability to be a shithead without consequences have started getting super defensive and insecure when Season 4 is themed around deconstructing Rick by taking away his control and making him face consequences, causing many to type essays about how Rick's genius and inability to grow is justified and shouldn't be challenged.

Every human endeavor is about reducing consequences. We wear clothes and live in homes to avoid freezing to death. We developed elaborate food storage and distribution systems to avoid starvation. There are always those who do this better than others. In a healthy society we would admire and copy their behavior. By portraying Rick as someone absolutely devoid of consequences, the writers are creating an impossible ideal to juxtapose every other character against as if the situation is binary. There is Rick and there is everyone else. This situation never really exists because there is no one who has achieved this level of control. That doesn't stop our unhealthy society from hating achievement instead of emulating it. In the real world there is no cutoff between the haves and have-nots. There is a continuum. Where you fall on that is often your own perception and not some real societal demarcation. That is beyond the writer's ability to portray and it probably wouldn't be interesting or humorous. Unfortunately, too many people like to get their social commentary and dick jokes in the same place. The show is entertaining, but analyzing it too deeply is just a rabit hole into someone else's insecurities.

It wasn't character growth that was my problem with Season 4, it was the lack of soul that many of the episodes had. It was as if it was a parody of Rick and Morty. I mean, there were points when every other character started breaking the fourth wall-because Rick is known for it and made it cool (suggesting season 4 was written by a committee that tried to add more of the cool things without actually understanding what makes them cool). It was good to see some growth though. Actual development is nice. Hopefully the writing quality can come back to match the plot and character development

I would like to see Jerry grow into a Man that respects himself and finally tells Beth to go fk herself and kicks Summer to the curb for their complete and utter disrespect of him, 95% of the time. Morty should grow and gain more independence and say on what adventures he and Rick pursue. He is with Rick most of the time; the way he interacts with the universe has to be learned and mastered and spiced up with his personal approach. Morty wanted to save the Fart and get him home against Rick's advice. Morty ultimately had to kill the Fart due to its plans to kill all carbon based lifeforms. Morty learned a ton at that moment. Rick should grow by accepting Mort's maturing and help Mort grow further. Turn everyone into Rick and let Rick fade away is the death knell of Rick and Morty .
