A lot of stories in the comments. Not surprising, for a romantic/tragic story told in song. I never had a motorcycle... but I did see RT quite a few times over the years. My story is about the first three. First: Cropredy, 1993 $600 air fair etc. Second: The Moore Theater, Seattle 1994 $20 ticket and gas for a 3 mile drive to Belltown... How many times can an audience belt out "Cry, cry if it makes you better. Set it all down in a tear stained letter"? Third: Bumbershoot Festival 1994 $0 and a bus ride to The Seattle Center. For years I remembered the reverse order, and an escalating cost of these RT encounters. But that is impossible. Back to the beginning. I arrived at Cropredy late in the day on Friday the 13th, and it was already dark when I parked the car across the road from the main field. As I walked toward the field, a very familiar guitar intro came rolling up the hill. At that moment I felt my life had become charmed. Hearing this again brings back some of my most vivid memories.

What a piece of music.... Box hill now has it's place a!ongside Route 66 in musical folklore! Been putting off any serious attempt on working through this on my guitar for years... up to fifth week in Covid lockdown and am now (after an intense ,on going , determined bit of shredding) beginning to see the light! Hearing this song over and over for the last month has been a pleasure.... and the 'stamina' in my right hand has increased for all the right reasons!!....tough times made a little less trying thanks to the inspiration of this pearl of a record

Picture is of a Seiries B Rapide and is definitely earlier than 1952 ... a Lightning was bump-start only, usually running on "dope" and with no idle circuit on its MkII Amal GP carbs. Not much fun on the road.

My memory of this song goes hand-in-hand with my father saying to me in the car, "That's good guitar playing, isn't it?" Seeing as he was a very quiet man, and rarely spoke unless prompted by another person, it became a powerful memory I shared with him. Since his death in 2013, I've adored but avoided this song. I know it all off by heart, every lyric and every chord, but I return to listen to it only when I have those pains to revive. They hurt. They always will. But I never regret crying. He deserves the best memories I have, and the love I will always have for him. But yes, as for the song... It is good guitar playing, isn't it?

I’m sorry for your loss brother. I’m glad that you were able to enjoy that moment in time with your dad. My father showed this song and many others to me also. We always bonded over music and strange as it is, YouTube music videos. If it wasn’t for music and playing guitars together I feel like we would be far apart from each other. I’m very fortunate and grateful for the gift of music.

This isn't a love song - How did the cops just happen to be right outside the bank that James had just robbed, and shoot him point blank in the chest? James had been a thorn in their side since he was seventeen. Moilly had only recently met James yet Sgt McRae says, "Come down Red Molly to his dyin' bedside" as if McRae and Molly knew each other well, or at least were sharing an intense experience that they had discussed previously.  How badly did Red Molly want that bike? Enough to set him up?

Says Red Molly, to James, "Well that's a fine motorbike. A girl could feel special on any such like." Says James, to Red Molly, "My hat's off to you. It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952. And I've seen you on the corners and cafes, it seems. Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme." And he pulled her on behind, And down to Boxhill, They'd Ride. Says James, to Red Molly, "Here's a ring for your right hand. But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man; For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen. I've robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine. And now I'm twenty-one years, I might make twenty-two. And I don't mind dyin' but for the love of you. But if fate should break my stride, then I'll give you my Vincent, To Ride." "Come down Red Molly, " called Sargent McQuade. "For they've taken young James Aidee for Armed Robbery. Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside. Oh, come down, Red Molly, to his dying bedside." When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left. He was runnin' out of road. He was runnin' out of breath. But he smiled, to see her cry. And said, "I'll give you my Vincent. To Ride." Said James, "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world Beats a '52 Vincent and a Redheaded girl. Now Nortons and Indians and Greavses won't do. Oh, they don't have a Soul like a Vincent '52." Well he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys. He said, "I've got no further use...for these. I see Angels on Ariels in leather and chrome, Swoopin' down from Heaven to carry me home." And he gave her one last kiss and died. And he gave her his Vincent. To Ride. Songwriters: Richard Thompson 1952 Vincent Black Lightning lyrics © BMG Rights Managemen

Actually an unusual road machine as the Black Lightning was built for racing. Inevitably some original machines and subsequently built replicas have been used for the road. This splendid song by Richard Thompson does them all justice and honours Phillip C. Vincent, their creator, too.

I got Rumor & Sigh for my birthday in 1991, 27 years ago, and I remember falling instantly in love with this song, almost entirely to the exclusion of every other song on the album, except maybe "Mystery Wind." Now I love the whole thing, save for the last track, but man, what a great birthday present. I also got a Ravi Shankar/Yehudi Menuhin CD that year, and saw classical guitarist Liona Boyd in concert that night. My parents and I agreed that she was at best mediocre, and it was a super boring concert.
