Watching this again tonight and I noticed the alcohol to check the color. I have seen other people use water to do this. Is there a difference or is it preference?

Thanks! Well only that the water would raise the grain, and take a long time to dry. The alcohol dries quickly. Paint thinner shows the color the best, but also takes a little while to dry

I noticed at the end of the video the squirrel was thinking that he needs to fill the long, gaping vertical crack on his sitting post with a little wood putty and maybe some walnut melting wax. He considered epoxy since there’s not good wood-to-wood contact. Right away he ruled out hide glue and clamping because the wood has seriously shrunk and the stress would be too great. He will finish with some sanding, appropriate touch-ups, but no shellac, toning, waxing, or polishing.

So, I've been binge watching your videos, I'm a woodworker, and I love building one of a kind and unique furniture, but I have to say watching your videos made me learn a lot more about furniture making, to watch you take these antiques apart restore them and put them back better then before is inspiring. We recently found my wife’s grandfathers lawyers bookcase in the basement of a family home. This is the type of cabinet that was made to fold flat in sections that when assembled makes a five tiered bookcase with glass doors on each level. He was an early office holder when Nebraska was becoming a state. One of the glass door inserts was broken but I was able to find a suitable antique piece that I cut to fit. The original glass was the waivy distorted type. The case is made up of solid oak and the only decoration is a routed vertical strip on the two front edges and a rounded oak detail across the top. Interestingly, this top provided a hidden space about two inches deep at the top of the assembled case. I assume that really important documents could be hidden there. All the wood was still in great condition after what must have been seventy years in a damp basement covered with an old piece of canvas. I inventoried the pieces and then cleaned each very carefully with dish soap and water. Then as you have done lightly went over each with 0000 steel wool. Then I waxed each with bees wax and a dab of linseed oil; it smells so good. The hinges were cleaned, oiled and reinstalled with the original screws. The little white porcelain knobs were in a small box, cleaned and reinstalled. The sides were each made from one oak plank cut into the five sections so determining the correct order of the tiers was easy. The completed piece is now in a wall niche in the living room and has been filled with items of memorabilia from our families. We call it the memorabilia cabinet and add to it when new events occur or when we find another family treasure. By watching your videos I knew how to properly treat this amazing find from my wife’s past and avoided the knee jerk desire to sand the heck out of it and slap on a coat of some current magic finish. And for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Carol loves it and me even more. Very best regards, Larry Sorenson, Glendale, Arizona

Excellent job! Awesome video. I have an old piece of furniture that has stubborn water stains on it. Is there a way to get those off without stripping the paint off? Thx

As you can see by the postings of both my comments, I've watched this again, and as always I come away learning something new! and getting my memory refreshed for the older stuff that needed prying. Thanks again Tom for your skills and for taking the time to do this and best of all for sharing it with us. And Thank God for the vaccine!.
