@Marcel H, the whole season was controversial, that's only the I-tip on top. FIA made so many wired decisions and we saw so many flaws in the rules. This whole Abu Dhabi story wouldn't have happened if the rules were clear, or Spa as an other example ... I still think it was the right decision to let them race and Max deserves to be champion. The stewards often decided against him an pro Lewis. Alonso would say "carma". But it is ridiculous that lapped cars have to do an extra lap instead of taking their correct place instantly.

@Pratik Patil nah, if you watch the video you can see Perez moving all over the place for the entire lap. Hamilton couldn't pass Alonso because of the narrow & twisty track - Hungary is very hard to overtake on. Abu Dhabi is not, but Perez drove more aggressively for the whole lap than I've seen from any other driver. He was fighting for Max's championship, Alonso was fighting for a podium or Ocon win. It's different.

@MC XIX no he did not make sure that Hamilton collides with him 💀 y'all need to stop reading between the lines. Alonso last year in Hungary was way too aggressive than Perez in Abu Dhabi. Also Lewis driving like Perez in Abu Dhabi was because Max could catch up to Rosberg, so that they could fight it out and crash. Max back in 2016 was literally a torpedo on track

@Pratik Patil I saw what Hamilton did, but this from Perez was different. Nico never tried to pass Hamilton because he didn't need to, so Hamilton never had to defend aggressively. Hamilton however had to get past Perez at all costs, so not only did Perez drive very slowly, he also made sure Hamilton would have to collide with him to pass him.

@Alan Andrew pitting wasn’t a risk for max. He went in second came out second. If Lewis pitted he would’ve come out second and Mercedes couldn’t take that risk. I am not a fan of either and I am glad the race ended in the legendary fashion it did, but realistically Lewis was robbed

@JFK Yes, at any time during the race Max could have chosen to crash into Lewis causing a DNF for both drivers or just a DNF for Lewis. In either case, Max would have won the championship. Senna and Prost both crashed each other out to win championships previously. Obviously, Max did not want to win the championship like that and so he raced cleanly and fairly, and ultimately got lucky with the safety car. Lewis knew he had lost as soon as Max pitted for new tires under the safety car. You can hear it in Lewis' voice over the radio. There was nothing Lewis could do at that point, except to hope for Max to make a mistake on the final lap.

@Drew S What if he shut the door at the last lap, blocking Max. he would bump into the rear to become the champion? The judge would let him win by committing so? I doubt this.

@JFK Fair play and sportsmanship, primarily. But Lewis also knew that if they collided and both cars were to DNF, then Max would win the championship. They were level on points, so the championship would go to the driver with the most wins during the season. Prior to this race Max had 9 wins, and Lewis had 8. Lewis could only hope for Max to make a mistake.

This race is perfect in all aspects, absolutely all aspects. Checo defending his position and his partner, the crowd cheering for Verstappen, the Croft's narration, the final lap, Toto's despair, Albon ecstatic with joy... Historical day for the world sports. Thank you Max, Lewis and F1 for this magic season. I want more, much more.

As great as Checo's defense was, that wasn't decisive in Max winning the title today. Latifi crash was the biggest factor. Mercedes was on the defense at that point regardless of what Massie did except ending the championship race under safety car. That was not going to happen. Not in a million years.

Wow, coming back here even seven months later still gives my goosebumps. I remember watching this live back in December, I had a full arm cast on and was so angry that they let the lapsed cars by that I was in tears. But looking back, I think we’re all glad that it ended in a racing lap, even though it was unfair it created such a great last lap of hope, so weather you are with Lewis or with Max, let’s all agree that the finish will never be forgotten.

Despite Checos epic blocking (which was fair and legal), this had no effect on the outcome. It was all down to Latifi's crash and some 'inventive' interpretation of the rules by Masi. This will run and run in the courts.

If it wasn't for Kimi's retirement from F1, he would have been DOTD. Not that Kimi should not have been DOTD (driver of two decades, like I read in a YouTube comment), on the contrary.

He was unable to keep pace with Lewis on better tires and when Perez closed that gap to 1.5 seconds, Max instantly lost it and was far slower. So even if Lewis had to give that place back, it would not change anything

Sergio Perez fully deserves all the praise he gets for defending like a true champion. He's knows for tyre management but today he's shown his worth as the 2nd driver for red bull. Gasly, Albon would nowhere be able to eat 6 seconds like Perez did. He kept his individual goals aside for team glory and he's helped max with the title

@Tiwaz No, because he was also traveling slowly by then he was behind the safety car going even slower and if he'd entered the pits he'd likely come out at the back of the queue of cars all bunched up behind the safety car. The quicker pit stop only works if the car behind you is going slowly and you have enough of a time gap to make it work.

@Tiwaz yes, Lewis and Max had a very comfortable lead over the rest of the field. I think it was 29 seconds or so. Edit: if you pause the video at the 3m 30s mark, you can see the gap to Perez in 3rd when Latifi crashed.

It is understandable though. this race had everything, from early controversy, legendary racings, accident, late safety car, title decider controversy and a new world champion to freaking memes. kimi retiring is way down the order. but it is also very kimi-like. quietly going on with his life despite the whole craziness. he is remembered fondly by everyone.

I like how Max fans are arguing with first lap thing when it would change nothingm Max was unable to keep pace with Lewis on better tires and when Perez closed that gap to 1.5 seconds, Max instantly lost it and was far slower. So even if Lewis had to give that place back, it would not change anything.
