So women allegedly lose 4% of their wages after having a baby and men gain 6%? Well, maaaaaayyyybe it's because women are less productive after having kids and men have to pick up the slack. Limited work duties while pregnant, 12 weeks of paid vacation after dropping the kid and then there's doctors appointments, school functions and the inevitable daycare problems. And don't think fathers wouldn't want some time off to do those things, it's just that, since men make more, the family depends on the father's salary more. And things only get worse when number two comes along.

I understand the need to ensure women keep their jobs or are given lighter work while pregnant. I think it's needed. I am ashamed of my country that this isn't already happening. However I'm worried about stating women make less money after becoming pregnant. What should we do? If a man works the same job and never takes time off work for child care should his wage be reduced to match a woman who takes time off? Should her wage be increased for time she spent not working? Should a man who has more experience because he never takes time off work for child care be passed up for promotions to give more opportunities to women? Should a woman be given a promotion despite having less experience because she took time off for child care? I'm not sure we want to go that route. All studies show that women who have never had children make more money than men. The gender pay gap is a societal issue with women and childcare, I don't think it's something the law can or should be made to handle. Perhaps instead we need to encourage men to play a more active role in their children's lives and when equal time is spent in the home by parents regardless of gender we can look into fixing the wage gap. Perhaps this is something which will happen naturally through automation and a post scarcity world. I can hope.

I worked 50 to 55 hours a week while pregnant. We where told we cant leave work until everything is done. If we left work unfinished then we would get a write up. Many people would get fired for essentially not working a 50 plus hour work week.

I have to ask, if someone is less capable than the next person or is underperforming compared to their coworkers, do they deserve equal pay? Or if they aren't willing to put in the extra effort are they to be considered as viable a team member as their coworkers who do go the extra mile? I've been outperformed by women before who made more than me as a result. I've also seen women get hired at lower standards than their male co-workers for political reasons. Like female firefighters who get their job even though their performance was far less than the men they passed up to hire her. So for that sentiment I don't think affirmative action is the answer here. If you see this issue black or white, you're going to miss the reality of it. Each case is different, but not all cases are a result of merit and not all cases are a result of sexism.

A woman I work with, who has a BA masters, told her boss she was pregnant and he told her that she "just threw away her career." By the time she came back her job was surplused, renamed and given to someone else because she wasn't allowed to apply. She had 3 months to find a new job or else she'd be "permanently" released from the company. She ended up taking a job that paid 1500 less per paycheque.

So in other words their pregnancies prevented them from doing the jobs they were hired for... Most positions cannot accommodate less hours, weeks off, let alone the restrictions the employee chose to take on knowing it interferes with their ability to do their job. If a crane operator decides to have lazer eye surgery, it's not the employers job to jump through hoops for the employees choices. If you're in an unskilled job, don't expect your positon to remain empty if you abruptly leave or stop doing your duties. If youre in a skilled position that can't be vacant, expect your position to be filled as it can't be left undone. Best case, plan your life choices for the times that fit best with everything else going on in your life, maybe wait till the big work project ends before popping out a baby, or schedule the time off in advance so your work isn't caught by surprise.

Wage decrease for a working lady with new born is sad, there should be protection to their y-o-y salary hike, but pointing out men salary increase due to a child birth is unhealthy. After all it should help average the cost for a family with a new born. Issue is that it is the single mom's who are suffering the most, when it comes to supporting a child. But then shouldn't it also be the responsibility of the man who willing fathered the child, to support her.

There are fair reasons why having pregnancies lower your relative wage compared to that of someone who has not carried a child. In Norway mothers get up to 10 months paid leave from work. This is a good investment for both the mothers and childrens health and development. However, this means the mother will have 10 months less seniority at the workplace, and she may also be less flexible with what shifts she can work due to the childs dependence on her. Where I work, flexibility is what earns you the most.

If a man worked the same job as a post-pregnancy woman, with the same amount of experience, with the same education, doing the same shifts, he would be paid exactly the same as the woman. When I was pregnant long ago and working as an assistant manager, I was passed over for a promotion. Instead they made a guy who had no managerial skills and couldn't operate a cash register the new manager. During rushes, I had to operate my drawer AND help him on his. Finally I left and left them to their own disaster as they deserved. Later after my child was born, I went back to work with the same skills and needing to support my child like any other parent. And production doesn't go down when I work...it goes up.

Working the same amount of hours does not mean they produce the same result. This is why wages go up a "ladder" in Norway, based on how much experience you have accumulated in your line of work. People with children, often but not always mothers, tend to spend more time with their family than at work. Another argument is that working 19hr shifts from 15.00 to 10.00 the next day is something people with children tend to avoid. 17 of those 19 hours are paid extra, because of the inconvenience. I am not saying women should be paid less because of pregnancies. I am trying to explain that it is not necessarily because of discrimination that they earn less. At least in Norway that is.

Canada maternity leave is 12 months to 18 months. My wife had a hard pregnancy and by doctor orders was requested for half days, her employer gave no issues. I couldn't imagine the stress that some of these womans went through, for small compromises to make them a little more comfortable.
