This ABC News special features the first interview granted by Nelson Mandela on his June 1990 visit to the United States. Mr. Mandela speaks with Ted Koppel for 71 minutes and answers questions from the studio audience. Topics covered include his 27 years in South Africa's prisons, the struggle against apartheid and its eventual collapse, and the future of a united South Africa. News footage and analysis bookend the interview and place the viewer unfamiliar with events in context. Shared for historical purposes. I do not own the rights.

Today marks exactly 9 years since his passing. Feels like yesterday. Man I loved this man so so much I remember when I was very young I would take his pictures from the drum magazine and keep them in my flip file. He is one of the biggest inspirations in my life. Definitely the best of a very few people who walked this earth. What a man. I love and miss you so much. You'll forever be in our hearts. I will do my utmost best to have a golden heart like yours. Rest in perfect peace and power. Tata Madiba.🕊♥️✨

South Africa is a sh*t hole only footsteps away from equaling Venezuela in crime and poverty. In most provinces the law and police is more a theory than a reality, our politicians are among the most corrupt in the world (ANC), public service and transport has collapsed across the country, load shedding is up to 8 hours a day because of said ANC corruption. I dont know what everybody else is listening to? The crowd seems unintelligent as well. Mandela implied that it is okay to support other nations that violate the same human rights as was being violated in SA as long as they support you, you support them. This is a self serving attitude to take and not for the highest good of all. This is flawed thinking, and horrible position to take. It is immoral. The guy in the audience is correct. It is hypocracy at its worst!! I was equally disappointed by Mandela’s answer. He’s not drawn into racial issues of other nations he states, but he wants help from other countries relating to racial affairs in SA. Please Mandela’s urgument and reasoning in this regard was lacking severely. Though i do have great admiration for what he accomplished in the broad sense.

I'm watching this interview for the 3rd time and am still awestruck with the way Mr. Mandela answers sticky questions. A lot to learn I suppose. Mr. Mandela's poise, preciseness, focus, and clarity of mind in expressing himself is amazing. That's why he is called a great statesman. Long live his legacy. Love from Mumbai.
Vor yearAdele Jonker
@ANDREW FERNANDES Agreed. That is indeed true. I just don’t find that way of thinking, like you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours regardless of the consequence as admirable. That being said im not trying to deminish what Mandela accomplished. Maybe he did what he had to do to get things done. But it doesn’t make it morally admirable. Its just a bit hypocritical to say also that he won’t then interfere with other countries racial issues, when he is asking for that very interference for support from other countries regarding racial issues in his country. Thats just my take on it. I was in that sense very dissappointed with alot of his answers as it was in my opinion very contradictory. Even the interviewer picked up on this and said staded that Mandela have said alot of contraversial things, aswell as the poeple that posed questions to him in the audience. But again it is just my opinion on it. If you came away inspired by it. Thats your perocative.
Vor 2 MonateANDREW FERNANDES
@Adele Jonker : It is very easy to talk and comment, but not easy to go through what Mr. Mandela has been through for his people and for his country.
Vor 2 MonateAdele Jonker
@ANDREW FERNANDES I have listened to the full interview 3 times prior, you can look at my answers under the fulle interivew, and i stand with my opinion. I think the crowd applaud bacause they love Mandela and do not realize the full implication of what he was stating. Don’t get me wrong I admire Mandela and what he accomplished, i just don’t agree with his and the Anc’s policies and perspectives.

When you are a strong leader, the world recognizes you as a leader. Let the people of the world recognize you; No one hates you or despises you. Even if you have enemies, your wise leadership You calm down wisdom, but you also prevent misunderstandings, conflicts, struggles, and wars. The respect of the people of the world will not diminish because you do not care whether you are a leader or a leader (even after you step down). When you become a true leader, you will be honored and remembered even after you die. You do not want to destroy them because they are my enemies. A true leader does not resort to violence out of revenge; He shows mercy to those who are called enemies. He did not retaliate, even against his enemies, who had been torturing him for more than a quarter of a century. This is a true freedom fighter who is not greedy for power. Sadly, some white supremacists are incorrigible and will remain on the wrong side of history. A poster remarks what did Mandela do other than a long prison term to be considered great. Most knowledgeable and non racist white people I am sure would find it hard to take the time to respond to such a ridiculous post. His many years of incarceration by the white supremacists regime of South Africa moved the world's nations to repudiate and sanction that country's politics into change. As a young lawyer prior to his imprisonment Mandela waged a legal battle against "Apartheid". The confrontation landed him in prison. Prison made him an international celebrity for the cause of justice and freedom.

@Eyes that smile - Heart that Loves Strange that with eyes that smile and heart that loves you do exactly the opposite of the meaning. Every great leader in the history of the world have left and enduring legacy on which others built. The legacy of great men live on to the benefit of mankind. What is his legacy? Who carries it forward? There is a saying: " By your friends and your deeds you are known" I live in Mandela's legacy. Show me the DEEDS. The friends I know. All the public coffers were pillaged empty. Our infrastructure is in jeopardy of collapse. Our once thriving economy have been demolished. He and his friends have not built one school, one hospital or university during his tenure. Where and how are the future leaders to be developed and shaped? We have 47% unemployment of our youth. State owned enterprises that employed thousands of people ( feeding thousands of families ) have been liquidated under the BBEEE legacy that they have incorporated. Under that 'legacy' experienced and competent people have bee replaced by people that had been denied the luxury of gaining experience and guidance from the very people that they replaced. Should they follow such an example in the footsteps of a such a man and his friends. So where is this agreement, calm and GOOD ORDER that you mention? What exactly is this legacy you are talking about? To me it seems that you fell for WORDS and not deeds. All I see is chaos and disorder. Incompetence and bribery. Enlighten me with examples so that I can look past the desperate need of the young man ( often the head of a family ) whose pride and ability is stifled by poverty and hunger. That young man that looked to a bright future under Mandela's legacy. That young man whose dreams have been shattered by the reality that rhetoric words do not put food on the table. Enlighten me with facts that I may look past the racism applied against the very people who have ability. People who want to extend a true hand of help but are denied it. A legacy is supposed to be DEEDS that have longevity, not be like a snowflake...short of breath.
Vor yearEyes that smile - Heart that Loves

Mandela’s answers were severely flawed and problematic. The guy in the audience stating that is is immoral is correct. It is immoral to suppport other nations that violates human rights when you yourself are aiming to rectify that same human rights. And then to say you won’t get involved in other countries racial issues ect, when you are requesting support from other countries to get involved on your country’s racial issues. How is this not a self serving attitude? Its is not in the common good for all and a horrible example. As long as you help me i will help you. This is a terrible policy. His reasoning is flawed.

Although many of the questions were purposely designed to be cross questions so that to put him in cheos of west east politics and domestic SA politics, he knew where they are heading and give definitive answers which makes them ashamed.

I have learned that regardless in what situation you were in with your enemy, there are some situations where you don’t need to fight fire with fire sometimes wisdom is always key 🇿🇦we were blessed to have Mandela to open us eyes Rest tata

To me he is a man of Integrity. Atleast he played his part in restoring humankind. He did what he could in his human capacity. He left a legacy for all of us who would like to see a better world. He left us a gap of which each one of us to play our part to fill. God bless his soul.

Mr Nelson Mandela was truly the greatest leader the world has ever seen. I had only read about him, I desperately wanted to to see his persona. Such an amazing confidence and clarity while addressing such a big gathering... He has faced some of the worst oppressions in his life, all his life experience has shaped his world view.

"I don't know if I have paralyzed you," he jokingly asks. He did! He blew everyone away! So cool. So at ease. Steely conviction and yet so warm and calm. Such powerful, yet carefully delivered and easily understood words. A true masterclass in how to be a politician. The absolute best there ever was. This was a brilliant interview that displayed all of Mandela's qualities at their fullest.

If we're to weigh Mandela's, legacy, significance and contribution to Africa can be worthy than all leaders of Africa who have drained their own economy. You portrayed democracy more than it's preachers. RIP WORLD'S HERO OF ALL TIME! Proud to be African. FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY 🇺🇬.

There are tons of Mandella out there don't be so blind sided in heroism. Remember Mandella, Tupac, Martin Luthar King Jr. Farkhan, Malcom X, Marcus Garvey they have sparks the mind to continue the burning fire. And I have seen a lot of them on YouTube passing down the burning fire to pull back the black family back together.
