Portugal returns to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022 with another brave, but beautiful entry - Saudade Saudade by Maro. MTR discusses some of the musical features which makes this interesting and gives an opinion.

One of the best reactions, and I've seen many. You capture the false simplicity and the artfulness of the song. Everything is where it needs to be. She's a great musician and Portugal is proud of this song whatever the festival results because it represents us and it's good. The guitar is not like Fado, but the overall feeling of the song is totally portuguese.

saudade is not a sad word. saudade is the embrace of the past to the pain of the present. saudade is reunion. Saudade is confirmation that happiness exists. saudade is gratitude. Saudade is the escape that saves us from ourselves. saudade is lap. saudade is the kiss that wakes us up and gives us back. saudade is tenderness. Saudade is taste saudade is a flame that burns without burning. saudade is light. Saudade is a space that we have to live in. saudade is home. Saudade is a companion who follows us closely. saudade is the way. Saudade is doubt without a shadow of fears. saudade is true. Saudade is rain tempered with sunshine. saudade is a rainbow. saudade is cold that shakes you absences. saudade is memory. Saudade is bread-that-everyday we knead. saudade is food. Saudade is a land to which we never return. saudade is heart. Saudade is the sea that always goes and returns. saudade is hope. saudade is faith that we do not depart. saudade is prayer. Saudade is the excuse that the soul gives to time. saudade is eternity. saudade is the matter from which redemption is made. saudade is Love.

As a Czech I cannot find a word to translate SAUDADE. But I understand it through the music and MARO’s voice. And for me basically SAUDADE is the feeling of life with all its ups and down, lows and highs, smile and tears, light and dark sides, easy and hard times. And I am absolutely sure, that there is no one on this planet, who could not use Saudade to describe any moment of their life.

No matter what happens in Turin... this song will stay... 👍 will remain in the hearts of the Portuguese people ❤, and in the ears of many people around the world... 🌍 Bravo Maro. Author, composer and performer of this magical song! ❤ As the song says... saudade... "nothing more there i can say, says it in a better way" because the word saudade only exists in Portuguese language. There is no direct translation. Saudade is not only sadness, it is also joy at the same time. Just as you feel sadness for the absence, you feel nostalgia, but at the same time you feel joy, for the good moments spent and for the feelings experienced. It is a mixture of feelings that is difficult to explain, that is why in Portuguese there is the word "Saudade". Because she sums up in one word, that mixture of feelings. This song is about the loss of someone (her grandfather), but it's not only sad... it's like a celebration of what was lived too... Not always you feel Saudade with tears in your eyes. You may feel Saudade with a smile in your face... 🥰❤🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹

"Saudade" means missing someone, missing something so deeply. "Saudade" is also "I miss you" but some piece of us too. Vor 3 MonateFlavio F
Well, hello from Portugal! Nice of you to review our entry to the festival. I'm no too keen on the Eurovision thing, but it's nice to have Portuguese music getting attention abroad. Btw, "Saudade" is a Portuguese word (apparently, with no equivalent in any other language, but I doubt it) that describe a sentiment of fondness, longing or belonging, or missing someone or something. Like national flags or hymns, if countries had national feelings or emotions, Portugal's would be Saudade.

Hadn't heard this one before, but it's absolutely one of my favourites for this year! Maybe not to win like you said, but the kind of music that I immediately like. No need to hear it multiple times first to learn to appreciate it like some other songs. Not saying that would make songs bad, but many songs in this competition will only be heard once or twice by a huge part of the voting audience, so certain level of simplicity can be a strength. I really enjoy their style of singing too, it just flows in these natural sounding waves and manages to be interesting without covering a huge range. Also not relying on vibrato or melisma or other fancy things. I was expecting to hear a bit more Portuguese though from the name of the song, but always like a mix of languages too. Go Portugal! My bias is that a new MTR video is good quality content worth watching at first opportunity, and you haven't failed to confirm it yet 😁

Portugal is sending another gem this year. I loved the Black Mambas's song last year and was gutted that it was ''only'' #12. It surely deserved to be in the top 10. Portugal definitely had the best staging last year. This year Maro will probably do very well, too. I'm positive it'll qualify. The song sounds simple, but it's a work of art - and it stays in your head, which is excellent for voting purposes. Whatever happens, Portugal should be very proud of this. Good luck from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!

Vor 3 MonateJosé Pereira
Saudade is a noun for the feeling of missing. When a Portuguese says saudade, it needs no explanation. There comes a feeling of joy, sadness, nostalgia and also peace. Saudade is missing someone or something that is no longer by our side, but remains in our mind and heart. It has a deep and intimate meaning and her voice signs this very well....

In the ESC 2022 theme, this entry from Portugal is "The SOUND of BEAUTY" ♥️
Vor 3 MonateJoão Pereira
I need to tell you what means is the best definition of "Saudade" that I ever read, and I didn't write this it was Conan Osiris that wrote this, " Saudade is a spectrum, It's a feeling, a sensation, and a way of life. You can see it in the pictures at your grandma's house. You can taste it in any childhood candy. You can touch it on any old couch. You can hear it in any old seller's chanting. It is unique and transversal at the same time. It is also a result of hundreds of centuries of being cornered into the sea. Cornered by land, by scarcity, by others, by our own, by pain. By seeing the danger and death as the only beacon of hope, beyond religion. Ultimately, it's the final romanticization of the void. It is being forever in love with solitude, with absence. Being forever in love with the cracks in your heart."

"Saudade" is like missing someone or something, but in deeper way. There isn't a word to translate it, Portugal is the only contry in the world with this word. Saying "I miss you" in portuguese would be " Eu sinto a tua falta", which is the feeling of the lack of someone. If you look for "Saudade" in a portuguese dictionary it will say that it is a grateful memory of an absent person, of a past moment, or of something that someone is deprived of, and that's why I think that this is one of the most beautiful words in portuguese

I never follow Eurovision, and I had never heard of Maro, but this got me hooked. I feel that the sentiments in the lyrics, and of course naming the song Saudade, set the mood and make it as Portuguese as you can get. But for me, the arrangement, rather than traditional Portuguese music, seems to suggest flamenco. I know many Portuguese musicians in recent years have incorporated elements of flamenco into their work. Some of the dramatic flourishes with the guitar, the vocals, coros and palmas (beating time through clapping), the six-eight rhythm and the general stripped down arrangement evoke flamenco more than fado. Gorgeous. I would love to hear an all-Portuguese version of this song if it's out there. And I also love her vocal tone. Reminds me of traditional singing styles from central Africa, like Congo (Zap Mama), or even Finland (Varrtina..?) Next stop is to find the song on Lyrics Training, and soon I'll be singing it the shower!

Can be a moment, a place, a person, a object, it is something you remember as important you missed but with love not sadness, it is inside in deep soul of portuguese people, related with 500 years ago from the discovery sailors who cross the world but they never know if one day they will see again their family, their home land ...

I know this channel is not only for ESC, too bad you're not posting a bit more about it in general cause you're by far one of its most interesting content creators. Also, you've just positively reviewed four of my biggest favorites of the year in a row (France, Portugal, Greece, Serbia), so how's that for confirmation bias, lol? One thing I also felt like pointing out about the Portuguese one since you don't focus that much on the lyrics, it's bilingual but it still flows really smoothly, it doesn't feel out of place at all unlike plenty of past examples at the contest, and it actually has a very good reason for being that way since MARO's just trying to explain the meaning of a really specific term like "saudade" to an international audience. She's just the type of insanely cute brunette I usually fall so easily for too, so anything less than a top 10 result next week would feel horrible to me, haha.

"Saudade" is a unique Portuguese word that means a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic for something or someone you care or love. Often carries a repressed feeling that the object, moment or person might never be had again. It is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places, or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, and well-being, which now trigger the senses and make one experience the pain of separation from those joyous sensations. Saudade describes a feeling both happy and sad, and could be approximated by the English expression ‘bitter sweet’. This song tells the story about how hard is to move forward after losing someone dear and realizing that all those happy and pleasurelable moments both once lived cannot be ever back. Time heals souls and so does this song that genuinely touchs hearts no matter what your language is. Saudade may be a Portuguese word, but the feeling is felt worldwide, either for a moment you experienced, for a person you had, for a memory you lived or simply something that cannot be brought back again. Great song, great performance, deserved a better result on the final.

"Saudade" is a feeling. It doesn't have a straight translation. "Saudade" refers to the emptiness of missing someone. It is a more profound feeling than nostalgia. It is a feeling that almost corrupts your soul. Loved your video! Cheers from Portugal!
